The Meaning of the Lord's Prayer

  • Did you know there are two parts to the Lord's Prayer (Our Father)?
The first part articulates who we pray to (Father) and who we pray with (our). We pray to the Father and we pray with the Son and his Church. God is Father, but also Son and the Spirit in unity with them. God is in heaven, our ultimate destination.
    Our Father
    Who art in heaven
The second part of the Lord’s Prayer includes seven petitions. St. Thomas Aquinas pointed out that the Lord’s Prayer “not only teaches us to ask for things, but also in what order we should ask for them (CCC, 2763). There is a method to the order of things we ask of God in the Lord’s Prayer. We start with God himself and his will, then we move towards ourselves asking for him to sustain us, forgive us, and help us stay in union with him and others.
In this video I break down these seven petitions verse by verse:
    1. Hallowed be thy name
    2. Thy kingdom come
    3. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven
    4. Give us this day our daily bread
    5. Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us
    6. Lead us not into temptation
    7. Deliver us from evil
"Jesus truly teaches us the perfect way to pray with these words."
    - St. Thomas Aquinas

I've always seen it as the format of a letter,
1st part is Name and Address: Our Father who art in Heaven,
2nd part is Greeting: Hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven,
3rd part is Main body of letter: Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil,
4th part is signing off: Amen,
The 1st, 2nd and 4th parts are standard but the 3rd part, the main body of the letter/prayer should be your own personal prayer, the apostles didn't ask What to pray, they asked How to pray.

Amen - we remind ourselves at the end that the kingdom belongs to God, that He is the ultimate King over His creation. The power is God's - we don't trust in our own abilities but work with God praying for and working in His power and wisdom.
Thine be the glory - As God is the King and He is the source of kingdom power, all the glory rightly belongs to Him.
Even if, as some claim, this is a later addition these teachings ARE certainly in the Bible and especially shown in Jesus's own ministry.

I have three ways of praying. One is according to the Lord's Prayer but in my own words. This is when I am calm and somewhat at peace. The second is when I need to speak with the father as a son and just a talk among two of like mind; usually when I just need to tell God something that is on my mind. The third is in desperation and need; a cry for help.

That made me think That’s why we are stronger in the God prayer when we are together just like Bible says that those who are gathered to praise God, 2 or 3 people is already a lot at it means a lot to God. That’s why enemy tries to separate us from each other. That’s why talking about Jesus is so important.

"The Lord's Prayer" is considered a"model prayer" for His children. Us. I've learned this with Liberty Bible Institute when I took Theology online in 2009. Good stuff for the soul, heart and mind. 😊❤️ John 17:1-5 Jesus prays for Himself, 6-19 He prays for His disciples, 20-26 Jesus prays for all believers. John 17:1-26 is actually the Lord's Prayer for us, Himself and other believers all over the world. This is the Lord's intercessory prayer for us. In other words He intervenes for us! ❤️🙏🙂

Find the Living God aka the Christ Jesus
And Pray that He will help you See and know the Word of His Mouth
Spoken by the Prophets and Scribes that give us the Holy Spirit by reading his Word in the Scriptures. Not all people know that Jesus rose from death To give us of his Spirit so that we can be resurrected after our flesh Dies. But it is a fact if a person has faith in God aka Jesus
You will live an Eternal Life with Father in his kingdom.

The thing about the lords prayer, is that Jesus said it was a model prayer, it was never meant to be repeated, so maybe it’s time for humans to be a little more creative instead of repeating a 2 thousand year old prayer.

Wow! I'm totally impressed with how many know so much WRONG information on the Catholic Church. I think it should always be strongly encouraged to read and ask questions about something before commenting. It's weird that most people would NEVER dream about engaging in discussion about a topic like car repair or how quantum mechanics works unless they feel they are educated and knowledgeable about it first but just fly of the handle about Catholicism and say just about anything. Very strange.

My uncle was a priest but I have learned enough about Roman Catholicism over the years to know we should completely reject a religion that does not preach that Jesus did everything necessary for our salvation and all we need to do is accept it from him!

Why would a brother kneel when we get to the sixth petition of the Lord's Prayer, then whisper his own words to our Father from his knees, and then stand back up right after the doxology?
