CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Brendan (Joel Edgerton) confronts Tommy (Tom Hardy) about their past.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Two estranged brothers and Mixed Martial Arts fighters confront the forces that tore their family apart as they prepare to do battle in the ring in this drama from director Gavin O'Connor (Pride and Glory). Tommy Conlon (Tom Hardy) is an ex-Marine from Pittsburgh who's never quite shaken his troubled past. Upon learning that the purse in an upcoming MMA tournament is the largest in the league's history, Tommy recruits his father, Paddy (Nick Nolte), a former coach and recovering alcoholic, to whip him into shape in time for the competition. Meanwhile, as Tommy steadily ascends the ranks by defeating one powerful opponent after another, his brother, Brendan, struggles to provide for his family with his job as a public school teacher. A former MMA fighter with a devastating punch, Brendan begins to wonder if he, too, could have a shot at winning the coveted purse. In time, Brendan and Tommy both emerge as dark horse contenders in the competition, setting the two brothers on a brutal collision course. But Tommy and Brendan's biggest battle won't be fought in the ring -- it will be fought in their hearts and minds.

Τom Hardy's acting in this movie is insane. His whole hunched body language expressing emotional trauma ...
Pretty pic
Love this comment!!! The thing is I see so many comments about who’s “right” or “wrong”. There’s none of that. Both have so much pain and valid reasons on both sides. An abusive household shatters a child’s spirit/innocence. They both made adult choices as children considering the circumstances. Pain, resentment and anger will clout reason and sound judgment. This movie is one of my favorites! Acting is superb.
Uh... that's how Tom Hardy always looks. Mumbling and walking like he has arthritis are his go-to "acting" tropes.
Are you in- incubus
Been a minute...i use to play my drums to this

Both are wrong yet both are right. Such realistic writing.

He started his own life and at the end of the day, the only person who acted out of spite and anger was Tommy - he had no right to do what he did. He didn't deserve to win.
Even tho it worked out in the end what Brendan did is simping to it's core.
käzmik you the type of dude who prolly thinks anything lower than how Tommy acts is being a baby huh.
A.R. Wolfwood you never turn your back on family. He selfishly started his own life. Tommy spent his whole life working for other people. For his mom, while she was sick, then in the marines, and then was fighting in the tournament for his fallen brothers wife. He was completely selfless, and was angered by how selfish and ignorant his brother could be. Can you blame him
One of the most underrated films, this movie made me cry!

Tommy felt betrayed by his brother since he looked up to him. He wanted his brother by his side, but he chose a girl over his family. That’s what Brendan failed to see in this scene.
Johnny Utah Brendan did see that. But Brendan was also a kid just like Tommy was at the time, and Tommy still had no right to keep their mother's death from Brendan. That's what Tommy failed to see.
Greg Drake Sure, but when Brendan also stated that part of the reason he stayed was because he was jealous of Tommy’s bond with their father hence the reason he stayed to have Paddy all to himself. At that point, the ball was in Tommy’s court to mention their mother’s death. Morally he should have said something, but it’s understandable why he didn’t.
Greg Drake if Tommy had "no right" then brendan had "no right" to leave them.
I think it’s better to see the seen as how destructive “being right” can be in our relationships.
But,but, buttttttttttttttt the girl is sooooooooo perfect in her love for him.

@@alexhazenbiller2275 And how could you be sure it wouldn't be that way? See it works both ways. As Brennan said, he didn't know his mother was sick. As a parent, my children's happiness is more important. If my son truly loved a girl, I'm not going to burden on that, just because I'm "struggling".
Tom Hardy's back, though!
HOW DARE YOU I think for Tommy he’s got his traps constantly flexed, in almost every scene the traps seem flexed
Trap monster
Abeede Ahmed that’s the point my dude. His character.
@@abeedeahmed5626 He was most likely taking Steroids or testosterone. Had decent trap genetics. Lots of work over at least 3 months. Diet and flexing hard to make them pop as well. All of those ingredients make for some great jaw dropping traps.
This came out in 2011 and Dark Knight Rises came out in 2012. He was most likely prepping for that movie.
That’s great acting right there. When he says I forgave you guys and Tom looks back at him I thought to myself “you forgave us” and sure enough Tom Hardy’s next line was “you forgave us?” It feels like a genuine reaction to what Joel’s character says to him. The look and everything. Great performances in this film 👌🏼💯
Joel Edgerton is a great actor. Never seen a bad performance from him
Forgiveness isn't always so light hearted and butterfly's and roses.
Forgiveness hurts sometimes, but it is necessary to heal.
It never is. If you can easily forgive someone, you were never really hurt to begin with
@@TheMilesGuy fuckno
You know what the best part about knowing you can hold your own in a fight. Realising you don't have to fight in the first place.
What’s interesting is that we know Tommy does, in fact, drink coffee; we see him do so in the diner, and we hear him imply it when scolding Paddy for waking him up. Him rebuffing Brendan’s coffee request was, I think, an opportunity that he saw to act dismissive, which is what pissed off people often do - acting like you don’t care is much easier than admitting that you were hurt (as would be the case if he acted outright angry). Very subtle. Fantastic writing.
Some times wounds are so deep that it takes allot of time to heal. The scars will always be with you but forgiveness helps clean the soul.
It's not alwasy that easy to forgive, especially in situations like this one.
@@rayunited2010foryou But it's pretty clear who has the cleaner soul out of the two brothers. One held onto hate, while the other tried to forgive and mend things.

Owen Miller wym
Tom hardy is one of my favorite actors! Hands down
What made this movie special was its examination of alcoholism and its effects on a family. This sort of conflict, and this sort of long term resentment toward parents, between children, is dealt with every day by people in recovery. Alcoholism is a terrible disease and if society invests in its treatment, many lives would be saved.
Crazy to think in the whole movie other then the last fight scene this is this only time we see the brothers together on screen
Well they weren’t exactly close, as you can see
@@joewhitehead3 not what I mean exactly from a creative direction it adds more impact and weight to the story had the brothers been on screen throughout I don’t think the emotional weight would have been as impactful
The fact that he tells his brother who he abandoned "everything i do is for my family" is another level of irony. When Tommy calls him out as a bullshitter for talking about "forgiving everyone" it really makes you think about what he's saying versus his actions and all the years he could have tried to repair the damaged relationships. The first time I watched this movie I was rooting for Tommy but thought Brendan was most "in the right", but after a few more watches I started to notice how this movie really strays from the norm by giving multiple characters to root for as well as getting away from a black and white protagonist/antagonist storyline. It is a lot more accurate to real life in how the writers are just giving us a glimpse into the lives of a broken family rather than telling a story filled with classic tropes found in fighting and sports movies. One of the main reasons the story impacts so many people is likely the way it allows for the audience to draw their own conclusions about the characters as well as the events that they go through. In life, everyone has their reasons for doing things that may even negatively impact others around them, which is something we see in all the main characters of this film. It brings very human elements to a genre that is often met with one dimensional tropes that frame the characters in only a positive or negative light.
I’m just curious! Why is Brendan more in the right??
That little noise Brendan makes with his teeth at the end of this scene is the exact same thing his father does to Tommy in their first scene together in the house. Check it out
this movie was soooooooo underrated wtf
Doesn't matter if it was underrated. You liked it, you enjoyed it. That's the most important thing mate.
What you all need to understand is that Tommy never stopped loving his dad or his brother. He would not have even wanted to see them otherwise. Him saying that his Dad is just someone he trains with is bullshit. A part of him wants to be with them because that is how he completes himself. But at the same time, he is a very hurt person. When we are hurt by the people we love, we try to mask all that love with anger. But we will see later on that he never stopped loving both of them
@@thelimitlessathlete I am sorry to hear that bruh. Yeah forgiveness is a good start. Forgiving someone does not mean you need to welcome them back in your life, it only means that you choose to not hate them anymore
Nah, I believe, he realises that the promise to his best friend's widdow was just more important. He knew, he needed the help of his father, who got him a perfect record in wrestling before!
No…he hates them… he just needed a trainer and did you watch this scene? Lol
@@charles305 Yes I did. Did you see that scene where Paddy relapsed in the hotel? That proved that Tommy did not stop loving his father
@@Ironheart73 oh you mean after he relapsed because Tommy told him that him and Brendan’s only thing in common was that the father was useless to them? Oh and then told him to go relapse? Lol this can’t be serious
When he said he forgave him and his mom that right there deserved a punch to the face
He made it seemed like him and his mother chose to just up and leave one day when it was their dad tht drove them out

Tense and superb acting in this scene
Tommy should have won the fight
this movie is about Hate vs Forgiveness
Tommy represents anger and Hate
Brendan represents Love and Forgiveness
if Tommy wins the fight, that means hate have won.
and as a result, Brendan will lose his house and his life will be torn apart, and Tommy will isolate himself and never trust anyone in his life thinking that he can resolve his problem alone by just hurting people, this will set him on a destructive path that will lead him to prison or getting killed.
and that sad thing is, he going suffer all of this alone.
so my response is, it's a good thing the Tommy didn't win.
@@abq4565 I agree. After the end, Brendan would definitely give him a part of the money. The thing is that most people have a thing for antiheroes. Some identify themselves with them, some think they're cooler...
Brendan had to save his house. I wanted it in the beginning but I understood after why he couldn't
@@petarvurdelja7667 Tommy was too emotional and boxing and mma isn't an emotional sport. If you let emotion in when fighter often times you lose a fight. You have to keep a level head, that's what Brendan did and that's what Tommy failed to do.
@@petarvurdelja7667 I've seen and done enough fighting to know emotion plays a huge factor in the final decision. Brendan sure was emotional, but he still had a level head, Tommy went through everyone because they were an obstacle, but when he got to Brendan everything came back to him, he struggle to get his head right and emotion took over. It's not at all far fetched to believe Brendan the more skilled, and the more level headed of the two won. Aggression based on emotional instability and power isn't everything in combat sport.

Tommy lets go of his rage, his brother is going to help him , and Paddy know his boys are going to be Ok , perfect ending - its not about who won
I’ve study cinema and it’s not Brendan who won but more the value of what he represent. He represent family, working hard, trying your hardest to provide for your close one. Winning is also a freedom and a liberty from his debts. Because of what he represent (American value) he has to win to show the population that you’ll get rewarded if you fallow them
The ending is literally perfect
@@farmerned6what do you mean it isnt about who won?? a major part of the plot is how paddy was always a front runner and never gave the underdog a chance. didnt even bother to train brendan when tommy left.
