  • In the 1920s, in the wake of the Russian Revolution, countless Russian and eastern European artists sought refuge in Berlin, where there was a more liberal climate for art and culture. There followed a great exchange of ideas and many fruitful collaborations with the avant-garde of the Weimar Republic. 100 years later, Putin's war of aggression against Ukraine has once again led many artists to seek their creative home in Berlin.

'The Russian Revolution back then, and the Ukraine war today, forced thousands of artists to start a cultural revolution' - What a spurious comment. There is no equivalent cultural revolution in todays Berlin.
In 1922 Lenin exiled the leading Russian intelligencia, yet the young Soviet Union (via a creative upsurge) reinvigorated Weimar culture. Interesting

Berlin, Berlin, Berlin...Du Perle an dem Spree bist Du Berlin...Und auch warst Du in den 1920er Jahren die Bühne einer zweiten Renaissance. Welche Möglichkeiten hat die Zukunft for Dich? Vielleicht eine dritte Renaissance? Ach, Berlin, Berlin, Berlin...

During COVID I started to consume lots of documentaries and podcasts about the 1920s and the 1970s. I think those two decades have a quite a lot in common as an explosion of creativity, experimentation, hedonism, optimism, gender equality, and new identities/lifestyles (at least in the West).

Remember the flames rubbing the ink off those pages, leaving a legacy which still is reverberating among its adherents? Remember Fahrenheit 451?

The sad thing is that the Russians Berlin welcomed in the last 30 years, immediately expressed their love for Putin when the war broke out and now vote for the fascist AfD political party. I’m sure there were a few cool artists among those folks, but let’s not fool ourselves!
