@@ZXSPEX I get that from the song but not the video. It is in complete juxtaposition with the song. It looks as though MJ showed up for some reason and is being attacked for some reason and killing those people, there is no Annie as far as I could tell.

It is. The outfit is almost identical to what Astaire wore in Bandwagon, and there are other aspects of one of the dance numbers from that film that are referenced too.

I honestly believe SmoothCriminal is his best video. And I remember seeing thriller as a child on MTV when it first came out. The thriller was a groundbreaker, it changed what music videos was soon to become. It was a trailblazer. But once you get beyond that, I just believe smooth criminal is a better video.

This might sound sacrilegious, but I rank this #1, ahead of even Thriller. The lean is obviously iconic, but the dance moves, the choreography throughout, is just fantastic, and I normally don't really care much for dancing. But MJ elevated dance and choreography to a level beyond the norms of the art form imo, to heights that are not likely to ever be reached again.

To be misunderstood and ridiculed on the world stage had to be soul crushing. Then that negligent doctor finished the job. Watched the documentary "This Is It" more than once. The show was so ready to go - but MJ sadly left first, just 18 days before the concert series was to launch.

I remember watching this video with my brother. My parents were watching something in the den so we were watching off the TV in their room. Right after the lean the tubes in the TV blew up. Thankfully no one was hurt, but It was extremely scary. To this day when I hear this song I remember when Jackson's dancing was too much for our TV.

I grew up in a mixed neighborhood and was wearing All MJ stuff leather purses, pins you name it. My grandmother was a fan of Jackson 5. So MJ was playing in my house a lot. As I got older, this video hit and it became my favorite cuz the choreography just is unbelievable! Back in the day there was Fred Astaire our generation had Mike. He was ahead of his time 🙏🏼

That weird bit in the middle where Annie dies and then returns to life. It's odd, but it makes sense with the lyrics.
That was the sixth single promoted to radio and came out well over a year after the album was released so the number 7 peak at the top of 1989 was not too surprising.
I've seen several lower snd higher quality videos, yet most have millions to billions of views, several million likes. Bar none, he was the best entertainer there ever was. A big group made a high quality 4K of this, and I watch it occasionally. My favorite song. May he Rest in peace.

The part in the middle of smoth criminal was meant to be a warm-up for the dancers. They later decided to include it in the video.
I remember seeing this when it premiered. I think I was 13 yrs old. I always thought that middle part was like this: When he steps through the door he goes back in time. And then in that interlude bit it’s like the music stops and whether they are ghosts or spirits of the past or whatever, something is trying to pull them back through time and they’re fighting it. When the music comes back they do too. Like the music is their connection to the world. At least that’s the way my 13 year old brain had interpreted it as 😉
