We Got Lost: Climbing a remote peak in Georgia alone

  • Crossing a border illegally is not ideal, especially when it might be lined with mines.
A couple of months ago we set off to climb Sherkhota, a dormant volcano in the Kazbegi region of Georgia.
This trip was meant to help us acclimatize for our ultimate goal in Georgia, Mount Kazbek - the third highest mountain in Georgia's Caucasus range.
From the get-go, we realized that this mountain is located in a very remote location, one that also borders an area in Georgia seeking independence - South Ossetia.
We hiked for 10 hours through rugged unmarked terrain to eventually cross a steep and loose col which took us to Sherkhota's base, and Kelitsadi Lake, a beautiful glacier melt lake, where we set up camp.
The following day we were hit with a thunderstorm on our way up the Sherkhota, and in a rush on our way back, took a wrong turn...

Fantastic videography again guys. Stunning images. Probably no one else has recorded that location in such detail. But..... don't go places that have landmines.
And dry not to be killed by lightning, or get hopelessly lost and die of exposure, or devoured by wolves in the night.
    Got all that? 😂😂❤

Awesome guys. I'm a bit late to the party but still loved watching as always! Crazy story! Seemed like you were absolutely pushed and in such a remote place. Shame about the storm, but what an experience!

I had Google Maps open to follow along. When after 14:42 you showed that lower col, I was like 'Oh no!' Paused to doublecheck and indeed... But did you not have an offline map with GPS or something??? Or even just a paper map? Also, on the way there you must've noticed there wasn't a lower col to your right?? Going somewhere off trail and also close to a dangerous border, I imagine one would be extra careful with orientation. Sorry, I'm just surprised. Thanks a lot for sharing! Very valuable to see the mistakes of others. Extremely beautiful and both your commentary really makes me feel and understand what you're going through! Can't wait for the next one!

Thanks for watching! As you can probably guess, everything is different when you're in the situation. On day 1 once we realised we went the wrong way we were stressed trying to get over that col because we had 45 min of light left, our only focus was to go up and over, then safely down, this is why we didn't notice the landscape around us.
Day 2 was a shit show. Because I thought the GPS file was at fault, I didn't look at the map until I realised we were in South Ossetia (BIG mistake). The col that we went over isn't too far in distance from the one we used to come in, and from the level of the lake, everything looks connected (it's easy to see the mistakes from a birds-eye view but at lake-level it looks completely different).
We both learned some valuable lessons, but I wanted also to share them so that hopefully someone out there doesn't make the same mistakes 😅

@@TraintoSummit Wow thanks for the detailed reply! Definitely understand that when you're stressed you cut corners. Running from lightning, being tired, cold and wet... Very easy to apply theory from the warmth of your own home.
