This was so cool of a project, that I dug out my box of old dead Hard Drives, IDE SATA, SCSI and so far have made 5 clocks... I got a batch of 15 clock movements off of ebay and some different kinds of leds and went to building.
I added a on/ /off switch to the back and a mini-usb 5 volt breakout board to plug a old phone charger to power the lights. I went with standard leds and 220 ohm resistors and 8 leds in parallel... That way the cost would be down and everyone has a old phone charger...
I used some Straw Hat clear, Defused clear, 5mm, 3mm ones. I got some that flicker and 3 color blinking too... I also lined the inside of the area under the plater with aluminium foil to reflect the light better (most of mine are painted black) and glued it down and burnished out the wrinkles with a cotton swab like I do when adding chrome to my model car builds... :-)
There all a bit different but still alike... Lol
So guess what's for Xmas kids! LOL
With this covid-19 crap and all my kids work from in a home office, this would be something nice to have on their desks that Dad made. :-D
Besides what else are you going to use those old phone chargers for... Lol
Thanks for the video and the great Christmas idea!

For instance, I would use a single power source, rather than a battery for the clock and another power source for the Arduino. Also I would put some sort of cover in the back (maybe 3d printed) and I would use a LiPo cell from an old laptop or cellphone and a charge module, to make the whole set portable and rechargeable. But your video is inspiring. Thank you :-)

I don't see the need for an HDD or an Arduino nano at all. Use a CD for the clock face, do the drilling, mount led lights etc and build a case from wood, metal or plastic. Use led lights that come with a color and pattern changing controller instead of wasting a nano on this.

nice, i think for someone like me who sleeps in the dark, I would prefer the clock hands wo be illuminated, the effects of those illuminated would give a soft effect to see the clock during night time. just a thought. it is an awesome idea though. 😎👌

Another way would be to have the disk platter move with a platter head pointing to a time. Use military time with 5 minute increments.
