Jency is widely known and loved as a singer till now because of the QUALITY of the songs she was given by Ilayaraja. There were 30+ music directors in the 1980s. WHY didn't they give her songs? I am somehow put off by the comment that there is no one who has surpassed Ilayaraja. Of course he is a genius and given good songs. But living in the days of AR Rahman who has given songs and scores which have been appreciated by top music directors of the world, this comment doesn't cut ice. You need not agree with me but The producer of Bombay Dreams the top notch music director introduced Rahman to the queen that he is his music director. If illayaraja stopped Tamils listening to Hindi songs Rahman made Hindi people sing Tamil songs. How can you make statements like that. Once I heard that comment I switched off.
Ilayaraja personally handles more than 100 instruments whereas ARR using organ in majority songs. Also in case of melodies ARR is no where near Raja sir. From 80 to 90 almost all Raja songs are beautiful melodies except a few.
Since ARR signed a contract with big shots it doesn't mean he surpassed IR. In this globalised world, today everything is money. No one is as prolific as Raja sir. ARR or anyone is no way near Raja sir for the speed, variety or the number of films composed in a year not just once but continuously during his hey days. What do you know about the revolution he made with the ragas...? Who handled the instruments as elegantly as he did?

If you Just collect all the songs of Rehman and classify how many are situational.. you'll get poor result.
Rehman preferred to be a 'Album maker' and directors like Shankar and Mani ratnam are okay with his work. That's how all these three survived.
After 90's cinema itself changed. And great directors like Bharathi Raja and Balachandar changed too.
But they never succeeded after leaving Illayaraja.
