- Skinny ones, wide ones, ones you could take a bath in - sidepods have been changed dramatically this year - and a great sidepod design could be key for this year.
But, pretty much all of the teams have adopted completely different solutions - all focusing on optimising aerodynamics, cooling and packaging.
So we’ve got Scarbs in to explain each one - as well as the one that has got us all a bit confused.
Let’s go.

Who do you think has NAILED IT this season? Ferrari? Williams? Merc again?
*Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE*
I hope wiliams and ferrari.
I have absolutely no idea 😬
Hopefully Mercedes
Can you not get a proper way to talk to this bloke , my teachers have better connection quality fuck sake
Merc
I'm so excited for this season. Basically we have no idea how these cars will perform when put up against each other.
I hope we'll see a big switchup and more close racing/fighting for points!
Great video, Scott! Thanks for all the interesting content you're providing us!
My thoughts exactly! I am SO hyped for this season opener, to see these cars go head to head for the first time and (hopefully) see the pecking order mixed up!
Hello what's the best way to get started with trade cos I've been making my personal research for a while now
@@robertshudson4482 I start with $2,500 at December 27 and I'm almost at $21k now! all thanks to Sonia
@@scott4543 Wow that's awesome because I Started with $5,000 at the same time. Now at 52,000$.
@kvng I started from the bottom... now I'm here!
The Williams looks gorgeous, as well as the Aston and Ferrari. The Red Bull looks edgy. I can’t wait for the beginning of the season.
Performance says otherwise
Interesting that Aston have focused so much on the centre/rear diffuser. Must be to give Seb a car with a really planted rear end as he’s always done best in cars with that philosophy.
You mean he spins all the time unless the rear end is more planted than a obese woman's ass in the seat of a motor scooter cart at Wal-Mart.
Vettel said that the car is slow as a tractor in slow speed corners and understeers due to heavy rear end downforce production.
Aston Martin design might have issues with rotation on slow street circuits but kick ass on fast flowing circuits.
@@scottmeredith3359 He doesn't spin all the Time. Hamilton made more errors last season then Vettel did in any of his championship contention years such as 17 and 18 and back in the 10s 11s 12s and 13 season
We don't really know which design actually works until the end of the opening race and who stands 1, 2 and 3 on the podium.
More like who has the most “fastest laps” at the during the season
Spoilers: it's not going to be Mazepin
Takes a lot more than one race to develop a concept
@@OOpSjm exactly. This comment is wrong
@@alaeriia01 bro chill
4:14 I agree, I love a tight rear.
I wouldn’t want it any other way. That and a slim waist. And…
Well rather than outwash around the rear wheels they might get pretty efficient directed flow to the central rear wing and diffuser. Might be a way to get away from peaky downforce and indeed allow lots of tuning throughout the season.
my boi albon last year has spent over 10 hours in the sim, 18 hours at the factory per day. most of the week he slept in the red bull factory. Besides he had to do his DTM race too and sometimes attended f1 race week too. Red Bull unsung hero.
Don't forget how Checo praised him for giving him detailed feedback about his experience
This year's Aston Martin and Ferrari are one of the best liveries ever made in F1!
Just look at that bad boy: 2:57
It's ugly

When are you guys gonna buy Scarbs a camera and mic to set up next to his webcam so he can send you crystal clear footage later on for the official video. With him being such a regular guest it would be a good investment.
This is an interesting idea from Williams as it allows air to be redirected and the "nozzle" may work differently at different speeds.
I'm just scared that such a variety of solutions may lead to massive differences in the team's performance, rather than even out the grid as they had intended
The dream scenario would be that every design from each team works well and is more or less equal this way we would have cars that look very different and yet are all competitive for years. But I'm worried that one design in particular is going to be completely dominating and by next year, the cars will all look the same
Go watch a spec series buddy.
Good. I dont want a spec series. F1's iconic cars and teams have always found advantages over the field, within the formula. This is what drives technology further and evolves the sport. The fia have a track record of limiting teams who find huge advantages, so if someone is way ahead of the field, either the teams will adapt or the fia will step in and regulate/ban it.
@@mordor1779 Its a possibility. With the teams having to share research and stay within a cap then the ability to be creative are reduced. They are definitely locked in this years because i cant see a team having a mostly new chassis by years end
I don't think this is something to worry about. If for example (and honestly I hope this is reality), Williams design is genius and results in them being on the podium in the first couple of races. The other teams will quickly figure out what Williams did right and copy it for themselves.
I've only been big into F1 since late 2018 but holy man am I excited about how radically different pretty much all of the teams are going with these rule changes.
Mad that the Merc is already out of date. Interested to see how their interpretation and new tech will fare against the rest of the paddock
Can't wait for the first race in heavy rain, I think then we'll see new aero in proper action !! :DDD
I noticed the progress bar on the ad you read.....I appreciate that.
Sad we didn't get a proper look into the Alpine and the Haas :(
Well put together summary. Ordering and grouping of design concepts really helped explain. Good job D61 team!
From what I have heard the Merc tomorrow is going to show up with the same solution as the Williams. Maybe their engineers learned something since they supply the engines??
It´s been a long time or even never F1 had been so much technically discussed. I see a huge leap at how F1 fans are seeing the sport now and discussing it. Sidepods, front wings, car shapes in general, that´s all amazing for the sport, and I think all of that is thanks to the amazing 2021 season. Driver61 congratulations for the amazing content!
You guys are really stepping it up this season, and I'm here for it! Turning into one of my favourite F1 channels!
This video is super informative! Thank you Driver 61! 🙌🏽
Definitely need a first launch vs final car used in the first race video. Some massive changes.
Seeing the diversity of designs is so exciting. Its like the air races and regattas of old. Each country's dare devils ready to test the best thing thier engineers have come up with. Cant wait for race day!
. . . but this does not give use close racing. . .
It's going to be really interesting seeing how the teams are all doing and what is working and what's not after the first few races
I agree that it is good to see so many different aero design ideas.
It would be interesting to come back to this video at the end of the season to compare what the designs look like after a season of racing.
Guys, check this out: The ferrari sidepod design is taking an "OK" concept that was used in the 2004 Panoz/G-Force Indy car side pod. pretty cool.
It is nice to have different looking cars! last year we had a little variation but this new car is great to see! i mean look back from 2010 - 1020 all the cars looked almost the same, if you painted them all black it would be hard to tell them all apart, I love seeing different solutions for cars!
They have also Latifi: champion decider!
Williams: look, I made a whole in my side pods
Mercedes: watch this...
As a Ferrari fan it always concerns me when I’m reminded no one else used their side pod configuration which either means it’s another F2004 or another SF1000. Hopefully out of sequence model numbers have no effect on performance.
Even if this car will be not an F2004 will be far from being a SF1000 . The 2020 had some serious other problems apart from aerodynamics starting with engine , and the gearbox , the suspensions . The F1 75 has a very powerful engine, so could be easily onother SF90 if it fails. If it succeeds will be a serious title contender .
what a big challenge...comming results......great spectation generated for the coming season.....great job guys.....see you on the track
I'd legitimately like to see Williams be competitive.
Yeah, I remember the 2014 season fondly, hopefully the extra development hours have really worked
waiting on that merc no sidepod vid cmon :D
"the way you started reminded me of: "one hypotetical one Juan" :D
It's really great see many diferent car designs!! And one fuction, maybe major one of Ferrari side pods it's split the hot air from up place from the cold and clean air from botton improving the Venturi effect tunneling this two diferents air flows!! Great video as ever Driver, we see you next!! :))
I think Williams will be a competitor... That extra CFD counts
i hope they will
I'm so excited for the new ideas. Great tech stuff as always.
The Alfa’s camouflage actually makes it easier to see the side pod detail
or does it??? 😵💫😵💫
@@slammerf16
Good point 😉🤔🤣
As a lifelong McLaren fan, so far I'm happy with what the team has done with the 2022 car.
This aged like milk
@@vukvucinic3685 Milk mixed with vinegar. :( I think the Mercedes PU is not working with the E10 fuel all that well. It can't be a coincidence that all Mercedes powered cars have bad aero. The fastest lap Lando did during the race was only .5 sec slower than Russell. Last year they were on similar gaps to Mercedes. The issue was Russell himself was over 1 sec slower than Charles.
there are reports already saying that the merc we have seen at test 1 is the car that was dev till end of 21' and test 2 will have the car that they devved this year, saying its already a second faster. If q1 comes and they are 0.5 ahead thats the last time i watched F1
I think at first few races it's gonna be
Mercedes
McLaren
Ferrari
RedBull
@@MP422ownz I think will be mostly Ferrari RB Merc .
> reports
Only ONE rumor from an Italian source Il Corriere della Sera which is unreliable even by the low Italian motorsports journalism standards. All that is known for sure, as confirmed by the German AMuS, is that Mercedes will have a conceptually different car to the one in Barcelona while RB will have the same concept but haul on major upgrades
Good video. Great explanation. The swipe and pop sound effects are unnecessary, just distracted from the information.
those pops are awful
These cars look soo cool.
truly modern and different.,
Love it!!!
Nothing like a good mind bending speculation prior to the first race. Gonna be awesome! Total guess work till the first q1,2,3. Then we'll see who's who.
You nailed it with this video. Quality content.
Another informative video and appreciate the timer on the advertising
This season is gonna be a lot of fun!!!! So excited!!!!
Scarabs must be so busy these days. He keeps appearing on different technical F1 YT channels.
At first I was _SO_ glad Mansell was back...
But reality is, this may as well be Scarbs channel at this point. 😂
why do you and WTF1 always upload new videos at the same time?
Excited for this season, really hoping to see more teams fighting for the top spot.
Is there a longer version os Scarbs analysis. I could listen to him for hours.
👍👍👍 informative well done. You're the best ⭐
remember when people were saying that F1 was gonna be a spec series in 2022?
I'm already excited for what upgrades and cheeky designs we will see in this first season!
If there is something teams are amazing at, it's to find flaws, new ideas, and push everything to the edge early on, so i'm guessing the cars will perform and look very different between race 1 and 22, simply because of the massive shakeup in the rules, and very limited prior experience with some of the new technology...
It is great to see such a variety of designs, even if its all Aero driven. Made me wonder what if? What if there was no downforce on f1 cars, what would they look like? Impossible for my brain but probably cigar shaped with a roll hoop. i.e. mid 60s style.
Hoping to see an exciting season this time and see some changes in the podium😁
I can't wait for the first race in a couple of weeks . So many different designs , who's gonna come out on top ?
I just can't get over how UNSIGHTLY the high Nose & front wing make an otherwise surprisingly bada$$ looking chassis designs down the grid...
The Williams appears to have a much more profound than any of the other cars .
I don't know if it will work but I like what the Williams guys/women are trying to do, Really Aggressive direction...
But the more I get a chance to look at the RedBull, Damn🤔🧐...
I was so p of over no coverage of the first test and with all the pain and suffering going on. Im really looking forward for F1 to get going. So I'm hoping Sky f1 will show all the test live I can't wait new generation if cars and the same drivers more or less I hope it's going to be good.
So what you’re saying is Albono will be either First or Last 😅
This video aged quickly(at least the mercedes)
Love the intro : Skinny ones, wide ones....
Proceeds with giant turd splash effect.
F1 teams make any design decision.
Driver61: **GENIUS**
XD, Great insight in the videos, as always
Time to invest in scarbs audio/video since your using him in alot of content haha
Funny how all those people were saying that the new rules were going to create a spec series yet we have some of the most radically different cars in recent history.
One thing I was thinking that teams could experiment with is moving the floor main section forwards or to the rear to see which works best for they handling package and more to their drivers preference....managing the brake release pop up an tire recoil mid corners an exit is important because as the floor pops of the ground from a quick release on brakes or tire unload then it loses its optimum aerodynamic performance of the under body...what do yall think
I'm just happy to see williams inovating... weather it works out remains to be seen
I almost wonder if the slight out-washing shape to the thru duct on the Williams may specifically be to direct air around the rear tires. The duct is possibly being used to differentiate the out-wash airflow from the air flow feeding the rear of the floor and the diffuser. I am also curious to hear what Scarbs has to say about how he thinks McLaren are trying to work the floor edge with the bulky sidepods.
Just wait to see the Mercedes sidepods at Bahrain testing. Gonna be crazy meant to be almost no sidepods
What are the temporary metal grids on the cars? What are they used for?
Its gonna be Merc , i have no doubt . They are the most innovative and motivated
Really great video but why is the music so loud in the background?
Williams seem to be looking at what Nissan did for their 2015 FWD GT-R LM prototype. Employing airflow "tubes" for efficiency. Be interesting to see if they are effective....
Scarbs talking about Mercedes sidepods aged like milk!
This video gets posted.
Mercedes’: LMAO watch this
They all look different now but next year they will all start moving in the same direction. Then they will start looking very similar. So this season could be really good especially if some of the lower teams jump up towards the front. I just hope the field gets mixed up and no one team dominates.
This is medicine for my soul.
these new cars look so good!
2022 cars are just beautiful
Needed some arrows on the pics. I had no idea what most of what was being discussed
Would the hole in the top of the Williams side-pod not encourage a lot faster air to travel over the top-back-mid section of the car which, in turn may well be attenuating or, at least, smoothing out the airspeed at the rear half of the underside's Venturi system?
If that is the case, would that indicate that they've found a way of going less agressive using the Venturi system such that they avoid the whole porpoising situation?
Ccmon WilliamsF1, wanna you there once again!
Could the Williams holes be used to assist with stabilizing turns at high speeds?
It doesn't offer a long lateral surface but it might assist in generating reliable glow over the rear wing with the car at a jaw.
@@Cloxxki perhaps if you get flow off an adjacent car during a turn it could help reduce impact and improve overtaking long turns.
Great video Scott!
It was nice to see. MCCLAREN get back up to where they were looking to finish starting the season hoorah
When’s the vlog on the new w13 side pods or lack of them?
GREAT VID
And there we are with mercedes rumors that they have pretty much remove sidepods with a new cooling design with the radiators
Extra Debit Card isn't available for the UK??
I don’t understand anything but loving the video
good luck williams!! = )
well that did not age well for the Mercedes one hahaha great vid tho!!!
Now that the Merc is podless it seems the more we think we know, the more we learn we don’t know.
I was worried about every Team ending up with the same, boring car. Now i'm so happy about how very wrong i was, it's really exiting to see all these fundametally different cars
I'd love to see a version of this sport with relaxed regulations. I want to see all the innovations in one package.. no compromise
Then you won’t have competition, either you can have free development and good racing or no real racing at all and free development
Your choice
cant wait to see the fararri on the starting line .. when its raining
Loving the Scarbs content ! Maybe he should get a proper mic if he's going to be featured this much? Just a suggestion :)
The Williams looks nuts from above.
