Samsung 89-inch MicroLED vs 85" Mini LED TV Shootout at CES 2022 - WOW!

  • Samsung put its new 89-inch MicroLED TV vs the company's 85-inch flagship 4K Neo QLED TV in a side-by-side comparison at CES 2022. There have also been improvements to the manufacturing process and LED chip size, which will hopefully bring the sky-high price down... eventually.
    Besides 89 inches, Samsung's 2022 Micro LED TV is also available in pre-assembled sizes of 101 inches and 110 inches. The South Korean brand is continuing to position MicroLED as its highest-tier display technology ahead of QD-OLED.

      Not necessarily- oled tech is not standing still and with QD OLED we can see how closely it will match LED in brightness color volume and still to have edge in contrast. With heat sink becoming soon a standard in OLED tvs - that will also drastically decreases risk of burn in. In the end price will dictate what stays and what not - Samsung have ridiculous pricing for flagship models that trump best OLEDs. if they lower it they stand a chance otherwise there won’t be many prepared to spend that much

      Yeah honestly, it has the promise of all the benefits of other display technologies such as CRT, OLED, LCD, with none of the drawbacks, while exceeding them on just about every metric.
      Black frame insertion + slot/dotmask CRT shaders on an OLED 'would' have been a perfect way to replicate the look of those older CRT displays except for lower peak brightness & burn-in risk. Micro LED addresses all of these issues, and if it becomes the market standard, I think even the retro-gaming crowd would finally be able to concede that display tech has achieved a net progression (except post-process effects to mimic CRT introduce latency but... I'll take it).

  • @nosm
    @nosm Před 2 lety +33

    I've worked on this technology, when it comes for price you should expect it to be expensive for quite some time.
    µLED diodes are made mainly with the help of Gallium Nitride material (GaN) which emits a blue light, this material can be changed a bit by injecting other chemical components like Arsenide to change the color to Green and Red (Red diodes are the hardest to make), the main problem is that the growth of Gallium Nitride material is very very slow and hard because the method used for growth is a bit complex and this material has much more physical problems or impurities than per example Silicon, trying to add another chemical element to change color only make it harder to get more efficient diodes with no problems.
    at this moment, the main way for this technology to be easily available for the public is by mcuh smaller µLED displays (smart glasses, AR tech, Military HUDs...), from what I've heard I believe Apple will be the first company to make it available trough their smartwatches with this tech, the growth method for this material needs to be developed in order to make it cheaper.

      Hello and thanks for your input. It's always nice to hear someone who was directly involved in the development. I have a few questions if you don't mind.
      1.) What's the life expectancy of the microLED diode compared to regular LED diodes used in contemporary LCD screens?
      2.) Theoretically, can the screen be used with the same quantum dot layer as a regular VA matrix can, to improve it's color gamut and viewing angles even further?
      3.) For how long will the market needs to wait before we see 65" microLED TV's at a same price as today LCD's? Do you have any approximation? My guess is probably around 15 years, because that's how long it took OLED to gain traction. What do you think?

    • @guily6669
      @guily6669 Před 2 lety +3

      I don't think it will ever be cheap because you have to pay for millions of fully calibrated good quality RGB LEDs and a damn nice controller to control all of those individual LEDs to high brightness and control each sub pixel of any pixel alone for all of them.
      A way to make them a bit cheaper would be using all LEDs blue and use a quantum dot color filter which is cheaper than RGB LEDs and easier to control them since they are all the same but would also not be as good as a pure RGB microled and will still not be exactly cheap...

    But my man it's time to help me lol 🆘
    With all these info I'm getting really confused about what to buy.
    Shall I wait for the new technologies to be available to be purchased or I just buy now?
    If I'm gonna buy a monitor now I'm between M32Q, M32U and the QN90A. I'm not into small monitors at all, been on 22" 1080p 60Hz for ages. my next monitor is minimum 32".
    What I don't have access to try is that from gaming perspective, Let's say 32", is it a big difference between 1440p and 4k in resulnion clarity while gaming?
    And I didn't get the chance to experience the difference between 90hz, 120hz, or 240hz. I know from 30 to 60 is a big difference, hell from 45 to 60 is a big difference usually I cap FPS on 90 even my monitor is 60hz it just feel smoother. From what I've heard from reviews is that above 120 you barely gonna notice or make any better experience unless you are ultra competitive which I'm not, I just play casually all kind of games AAA, FPS, sports... etc, 3 hours a day.
    For me the price difference between QN90A 50" and M32U is $350 and between the M32U and M32Q is $460, which isn't an issue. But if I'm not gonna get a much difference in experience I would like to put that $350 or $800 in something else.
    I'm not into that much high FPS. I care more about smoother experience while gaming but if higher means better then yeah
    I feel lost lol and really cannot take a decision. If I could experience them first hand I would know what to choose but it's all a guesswork right now that's why I'm seeking for some experienced opinions 🙏🏻

    Linus Tech Tips had a very interesting video about Micro-LED TV'S a few months ago as he wanted to buy one and have it installed. But for very concerning reasons the company he went through suggested against it and pointed out some pretty troubling flaws that are currently present in the technology. For starters the wall where the TV is to be installed requires a "level 5" wall finish where particular grade drywall is used, then they mud and sand the wall so it achieves a tolerable level of flatness so that the panels can be installed. This is so when the modular panels are interconnected the visible seam between panels is minimized. Another issue is that the panels require color matching as there is variation that is delectable to the human eye. And because individual panels fail, you must pursue matching replacement panels.
    Now, this may not apply to large singular panels or fixed size TV'S, but the modular panels Samsung has demonstrated appear to be completely illogical at this point.

    Looks like the perfect TV screen. Need to get the sizes and price down to reasonable levels though. Is there a reason they are so big? Is making smaller screens a problem with this tech at the moment? Or is it because it is the only way to recoup the R&D?

    • @Erowens98
      @Erowens98 Před 2 lety

      Making them smaller is a problem. It's very difficult to make LEDs that small and then place them all accurately into the correct positions without damaging them in the process. The higher pixel density, the harder it is.
      That's why they're all modular at the moment. If a panel is 4 1080p panels glued together. Then if 1 of the 4 panels has a manufacturing defect, it won't ruin the entire panel, just that one quarter panel module.

    • @GAMExLOGIC_
      @GAMExLOGIC_ Před 2 lety

      They could make a smaller 89" version, because they were able to shrink the individual leds. At the moment this is the smallest they can make the leds. Smaller leds will cause more defects and have higher costs to produce.

    Is this the end all of tv technology? Once it can be any size, has no heating problems, and has a cheap price, what more could a screen ever do? It has the full vision spectrum covered, including true blacks, has more brightness than is ever needed, other than the possible input lag difference from OLED for gamers... I don't see anything left to improve.
