    It’s scary how much trucks are these days. Granted you get so much more in a truck today versus 20 years ago but $50,$60,$70,000+ for a pickup truck is hard to swallow.

      TestDriveNow Reviews by Auto Critic Steve Hammes I bought my first car in 1992 from my older brother who bought it brand new a few years before. It was a 1989 Ford F-150 XLT Lariat that he bought new for $14,700. Granted trucks have come a long way since then but I think the cheapest F-150 you can get today is over $25k. Big changes over the years.

    • @stevehammes
      @stevehammes  Před 5 lety +4

      Ryan Lange For sure! So much profit to be made in trucks that the OEMs keep pushing the envelope in terms of features and pricing. You can even option certain Ford trucks to over $100k now.

    • @anthonyj810
      @anthonyj810 Před 5 lety +1

      @@stevehammes For 45k all you get is a 1500/f150. If you want a 2500hd or 3500hd or f250/f350 diesel which are needed for heavy towing you're going to spend 54-56k just for a base model with barely any features, 62-65k for fully loaded.

    I can’t believe you don’t have a million subscribers. It’s hard to see a guy like Doug Demuro with two million plus and you with 60k or so. You are so much more articulate and comprehensive. Even though he is an entertaining guy and I enjoy some of his stuff, his clown like delivery gets a bit old when you want to get a serious take on a vehicle. Keep up the outstanding reviews Steve, you produce stellar reviews and I always look forward to watching.

    For a lot less money, I bought the WT, SUMMIT WHITE had side steps and bed cover added.
    The WT has dark grey vinyl seats with fold down center console, rubber floor mats, black painted rear bumper and black painted front end that matches trail boss CHEVROLET cutout on grill front crossbar in black, OEM
    Red tow hooks and 20" wheels were added to match trail boss look. All in all a great truck for under $40k plus tax.
    Interior controls will be familiar to Chevy owners, plus infotainment system is compatible with IPHONE and ANDRIOD with hands free calls.
    Not bad all in all.
    I like the look and really like the ride, oh yeah, they also made the turning radius much better.
    It still feels like a truck and that's what I need for work.

      As a GM buyer at heart, I hated the new look at first. But I'm like you...after seeing one in person I like it a lot. The Fords and Dodges still beat GM trucks in interior (unless you have a GMC Denali), but from everything I've watched and read by reviewers, the new GM trucks are beating their competition in actual functionality and driving.

    This is so far the nicest review I've seen on the new Silverado/Sierra twins. I was waiting for you to mention how this isn't as nice as the Ram on the inside. And what's the hate with hard plastic and auto journalists? Almost every production car, even Bentley and Rolly Royce, has hard plastic somewhere in the interior. Including the new Ram. Some just hide it better than others.

      The only reason I probably noticed the issue with the Silverado feeling weak due to the shift programming (Shifting to 6th quickly for MPG) and the harsher ride was because of coming from a Ram to it. That it's also why I noticed that the real world MPG was so good... He swears that the HEMI is a lot more powerful and would smoke his Silverado because he doesn't run it hard and I imagine a lot of ppl would think the same if they didn't know the specs.

  • @SquireSCA

    I would totally be getting this. I picked up the 2018 Z71 and had the dealer install a 2.25" front level kit and 3" spacer in the rear to keep the factory rake... Also had them put on a set of 33" Nitto Ridgegrapplers, and I then removed the front upper and lower air dam, plus the "chrome mustache" had to go, and installed a Rough Country double row LED lightbar in between the rescue hooks to clear that gap up... And then a month later I saw this new Trail Boss and was like DAMN! That's the truck I should have bought, and would have waited, had I known... At this point I have pretty much made my truck a Trailboss, so I can't justify trading it in on the new one yet, but as much as I like mine, I really like this new model.

    About the cost: In 1964 I went on a class trip to the New York Worlds Fair and saw the Ford Mustang being introduced. It would cost around $2400. In the 90's I was doing pretty good financially and purchased a home stereo for around $10,000.00. In 2015 I purchased a middle of the road Ford F 150, for around 50K. I have lost touch with the business world being in retirement and sometimes I"m amazed at what the car companies can give the customer for 20K, and then I am amazed at how little you get for 57K. I believe it is all in knowing what your customers wants. If you can even consider a PU truck then you are in bracket that indicates you have and are willing to spend money. The add ons are real money makers and what's another 5K if you are willing to part with 50K. Still GM along with the other manufacturers are willing to gouge their customers. Although honesty is the best policy I was never under the illusion that car companies acted that way. Note that when buying you must set a limit as to what you are willing to spend and don't be afraid to start thousands perhaps even 10K under the asking price.. Do your homework meaning no book values of old and new. You've nothing to loose except your money.

    I've had a few Silverados as rentals, and they really do park like boats. my biggest gripe with GM products is the use of cheap looking and feeling plastics in cars that are that price range. The trucks from the big 3 can take a few lessons from each other, and come up with something actually worth those prices if it has quality materials inside.

    I couldn't afford to pay 50 or 60 thousand for a trail boss so I bot a custom model Silverado for 41 thousand. It doesn't have all the extras and niceties like the trail boss or the LT model has, but it has the things that are most important to me. It has the 5.3 motor with the 3.42 rear end and the toe package. It is for wheel drive with a locking rear diff and it has a great filling ride to it just like the more expensive models do.

    It would be nice if the new truck had automatic locking/unlocking tail gates. It would be like another vehicle door. You can have a secure bed cover that is tougher than a glass window, and have the convenience of automatically locking the tail gate. Other models of trucks, i.e. The Avalanche, had this feature over ten years ago.

    Did you let the engine break in ? I notice that right out of the dealership, my fuel economy is bad for a a week or 2, but later on, it increases and settles close to the expected average.
    I've experienced this with Mazda, Toyota, and GM vehicles. I notice that 2 months into driving, my fuel economy usually peaks well above average, and a year into driving the vehicle, it approaches the shown average.

    I would have liked to see GM use K02s instead of Duratracs ... I just a set on my '18 Silverado (stock size, 275/55/20) and the noise difference on the highway is negligible. Most K02 reviews would agree which is why I went with them over the Duratrac; many reviews comment on the road noise of the Duratracs. I noticed the road noise immediately when I took the Trail Boss out as a loaner.

    Max tow capacity is not available in the Trail Boss, you need to step up to the LTZ or High Country with the 6.2L v8 and 3.42 axel ratio to get the 12500+ lb towing capacity . On the TB the tail gate is only a power unlock, it then uses gravity to drop itself using dampers to soften it, to close it you have to manually lift it back. The High Country has a true power tailgate that will go up and down at the push of a button. The exhaust does sound good but it’s not a true dual, it’s a single that splits. the corner bumper steps are bigger/deeper across the new Silverado line up, not just on the Trail Boss. Finally You took the time to put this review together and didn’t even mention anything about the new engine management system or that in general the new 2019 Silverado makes mix use of steel and aluminum and is in the area of 400lbs light than the outgoing model.

      You can't trust the DIC you have to hand conculate. The DIC is usually off by like 2 or 3 mpg, also this truck has mud tires so that alone drops the MPG by at least 1 vs having regular all terrains.

    It should also be considered that lots of trucks sold these days double as family haulers (check the sales numbers over the last decade) and the lack of tech/safety features like adaptive cruise and auto brake assist on sportier trims like this Trail Boss, Ram's Rebel and the Ford Raptor is a real bummer. It's leading me to the new GMC AT4, which is more expensive than this Trail Boss but configured the same, the AT4 is $2,000 more. I plan on driving my next truck into the ground, and $2,000 over the course of 20 years is only $100 per year. Hard not to spend that when you're talking about your families safety. I've saved that much money already with having the auto brake assist in my wife's Subaru Outback.
