Ex-Post Office boss Paula Vennells accused of talking 'absolute rubbish' as she breaks down in tears

- Sam Stein KC has accused ex-Post Office boss Paula Vennells at the inquiry of talking "absolute rubbish".
Ms Vennells said she "loved" the Post Office however Mr Stein says she "failed" in her role. She is at the inquiry for her final day of questioning.

Did she cry for the decent people wrongfully pulled out of society and locked up in bad prison conditions, or for their families. Did she ever breakdown in front of staff over what she was doing in order to avoid blame on the post office or on her. What are her tears for, it seems she is crying more for herself than for others out of pity. We are in a very selfish society.

Well, exactly. Looked over part of the 860-plus pages of her "first witness statement" at postofficehorizoninquiry and on page 39 she references having "no knowledge of the Horizon system" before joining the Post Office, nor "that there were bugs, errors or defects ("BEDs")". Yeah. Bedbugs, Paula.

I worry that the outcome of this will be a whitewash in the hierarchy and no justice for the actual workers.

Of all the responsibilities that a CEO of the PO had, prosecuting sub-post masters and sending them to prison should have been at the very top of the pile of responsibilities, because taking away someones livelihood and liberty far outways anything else, yet she, as CEO, claims not to have known anything about it. And we're supposed to believe that!

Isn't the first duty of a CEO to ensure that their organisation behaves at all times with probity and moral rectitude ?
By turning a blind eye to the fact that there was clearly a problem with Horizon and that it was NOT being dealt with in a proper manner she was by default facilitating the wrongful convictions of innocent people.
And this from an ordained minister of the church who should have the moral courage to speak out ?

Yes, setting and implementing the culture. She had a team of about 100 staff in a department conducting criminal investigations and prosecutions which are amongst the most critical aspects of western society working for her for about 4 years which she says she had no understanding of their responsibilities or conduct. Gross and wilful incompetence.

What's the point of a public enquiry if nobody is held to account with serious consequences? What we need is a police investigation leading to prosecution of the people responsible.
At last, we have someone like Sam Stein KC who in no uncertain terms is bringing the brutal reality to Vennells and I was cheering him on for doing but in terms of the discomfort, humiliation, tears (but hers crocodile ones) and total devastation what she is now enduring is just a drop in the ocean to what she caused all those PO masters.
How hard is she trying to cry? Totally unconvincing.

It’s struck me that Paula Vennells is clearly under-qualified, incompetent & perhaps, on reflection, should not have been given the job that she did. Some have suggested that she got that job because she’s female & whoever gave her that job was as interested in being ‘politically correct’ as anything else.
Whether being incompetent is illegal or not is enough to send her to jail remains to be seen. Time will tell. I also wonder if she and others, are feeling suicidal.

That's an interesting question, I think! Some say simply back into the Post Office, to inflate their share price. Others say to pay these bosses' bonuses!

@@oneoflokis Fujitsu is possible. Because much of the Money that disappeared was extracted under legal duress from the sub postmasters own savings. But the actual money stolen must be somewhere else. Otherwise both the money not stolen by the post masters and the money extracted from the postmasters would appear in the ledgers of the post office accounts. So the money must either have been stolen by Fujitsu employees who had access to the Horizon system or by someone within the post office accounts department who had access to Horizon.

She has the assets to never need to work again. She could pay everything she earnt at the Post Office into a scheme to contribute towards compensation for those affected. That would be at keast a symbolic gesture indicating at least some real, genuine remorse. It appears she feels nothing.
