PR14 Levada Dos Cedros Walk - perfect accompaniment to a Fanal Forest visit

  • We were looking for a beautiful and easy hike on Madeira that was near Fanal Forest. We found the Levada Dos Cedros walk and it did not disappoint. We began the trail at Curral Falso to avoid the steep descent at the beginning from Fanal's end and we were welcomed with an eerie vibe - very foggy, but equally as atmospheric. Following the winding levada, we were taken through the Laurisilva forest, across cute bridges, out to a viewpoint (which may be better for you than it was for us on this cloudy day!) and altimately to a handful of pretty waterfalls. The PR14 Levada Dos Cedros hike is an easy levada walk that is perfect for most ages and abilities, especially if you park down the hill at Curral Falso and turn back once you reach the waterfalls, avoiding the steep steps section. If you complete the trail from Curral Falso along the levada dos cedros to fanal, you will need to walk up a steep set of stairs for a few hundred meters of elevation which would make this more of a moderate hike instead. If you're planning to visit Madeira island, or are just looking for things to do in Madeira to decide on whether a Madeira vacation is right for you, I hope this video will be helpful.

Caroline, Thanks for sharing, I worry about long one- way hikes. If I break a leg or some injury were I can't walk back out, and I must be packed out by rangers or removed by helicopter. Here we often hike in remote areas and alone. Several hikers have disappear over the years, maybe wild animals, or Big Foot? Or maybe crossing a river and falling into the water and being carried off. Some times it is nice to have other folks walking the trails so if some thing happen your not alone. Glad Andy's got your back. I love your channel. Happy hiking in 2023. Cheers 🍕🍕👷‍♂

Ever since my friend took that tumble in the Lake District, I'm the same, worry about having an accident that leads to needing a mountain rescue team! I occasionally do solo hikes, but around here, you're not too far from civilisation, and if I'm going further afield, Andy's usually with me. But the idea of hiking solo in the US terrifies me as I know bears enjoy those wildernesses too! The one silver linking about only being able to travel in peak school holiday's is that feeling of safety, knowing there's a good amount of other people on the hiking trail too! I hope to get a few hiking adventures in this year too - though the first trip of the year will be something similar-ish, taking in the outdoors, but not through hiking. Still have a couple of other trips to edit and share after Madeira before I get onto 2023 though! Cheers to you too

Hi Khatoon, I am well thank you, I hope you are too. We did the hike as a there and back as you mentioned, but there are 2 trailheads that meet the main road at different points, so it's possible to do it as a one way hike and include Fanal Forest at the top. We saw a tour group with a guide and assume they did this as a driver can obviously pick them up at the other end. Unfortunately for us, because we had the car, we had to go back on our selves to collect it! Best wishes for your family and friends too

Hi Dave, thank you so much for such kind words. 🙏 I tend to jump around a lot with my travels so hopefully I'll be able to bring you some videos in destinations you might visit too. It's exciting when you're just starting out as so much is so new and it's a lot of fun learning. Best of luck with it and thank you for the sub

You're right about those hikes all being different, I guess the weather and conditions are changing on a daily basis and to a certain extent you just can't tell for sure what you're going to get. This reminds of my of many of my own hikes that I've done later in the day - where I end up rushing because I really want to fit it in. At least you didn't finish up in the dark (or did you?). The waterfalls were nice but I have experienced those type of slippery rocks myself and they are treacherous, much worse than ise in my opinion partly because if you get it wrong you're going to end up bouncing off a jagged rock and possibly landing in water. Nice to see these trails though!

We were lucky with summer on our side that we had plenty of daylight left and even arrived back to the apartment in daylight - but had it been winter, I expect it would have been a different story! Only done 1 hike to date where we finished in the dark, but it was planned that way as we set out with the aim of seeing the sun set... so an unintentional dark end is yet to come by the sounds of things! But I'd take that over stacking it on slippery rocks by a waterfall where as you say, I bounce off a jagged rock and end up in the plunge pool!

Hi Sury, I hope you have an amazing time like we did. July is a fab time to go as it doesn't rain so much so you're free to visit most places whenever it suits you rather than needing to either brave the rain or go where it's not raining!
