Hey Mike, very interesting that you posted this video. We took the cablcar up to Monte Palace and had something to eat at the patio de Babosa where you filmed, then walked down the same part as you did but we walked down from where the barrier was. It wasn't there when we went but there was a sign basically saying to proceed at your own risk. It wasn't particularly difficult but certainly not a leisurely walk and not one to do when it's wet as it was mostly steps. There must have been thousands of them. As we got towards the autostrada bridge, it was an old disused levada, so a gentle path then when we got to the houses, it was literally hundreds more steps to the bottom. Steep ones at that which came out on the road not far from the indoor market. Even though I had walking boots on, my right toe got quite sore. It was scenic in places but not particularly outstanding. Probably why we didn't see anyone else! Great video as always.
Hiya Paul, that interesting you went down the bit where the barrier was and the barrier has gone. I do remember it's not one to do when it's wet as yes it's pretty much just steps eh. I can see how having hundreds more steps to the bottom would have knackered your toes, did you wake up to some attractive black toenails this morning? We did that walk last Monday and my toe has just about recovered! Fortunately it didn't go black but swelled up a bit. Our upper thighs took a few days to recover as well though normally I don't get aches on walks. We're going to do the one in this video tomorrow so will get the bus to Monte. Thanks for posting these videos Mike. It's nice to see places we recognise as well as inspiring us to do the same walks. We're absolutely loving it here. It's going to be hard going back home! Yes, I can imagine how you feel!

Paul we did exactly the same as you,we took what I think was signposted levarda Bom successo which we took and yes hundreds of steps.I’ve replayed the video and unfortunately it seems to miss this junction but still enjoyed the walk with tight groins at the finish.
@@jimboy7415 yes, levada Bom Successo. That's the one. It's fallen into a bit of disrepair so doesn't seem to be on any list of recommendations. I bought some new walking boots which weren't cheap but turned out to be quite uncomfortable and after that walk my big toenail eventually went black and came off. That was the only time I wore them in Madeira. It's literally only recently grown anywhere nearly back to normal! Funnily enough I hadn't worn them since but wore them only yesterday on a walk and they weren't any better. Just have to put it down to a bad purchase.

I thought I'd let you know that we did this walk yesterday. We took the bus to Monte, had a coffee at the patio de Babosas then set off. The only annoying thing was that everything is closed on Mondays! We saw that the jasmin tea garden was closed on an earlier sign so we walked up the steps to the restaurant bar Horizonte which had a large patio area with fantastic views over Funchal. We sat there for a while and enjoyed the views but they were also closed! It looked like a nice place to eat. We carried on past the Jasmin tea gardens to the main road (ER102) where we got a bus back to Funchal. It was only a 15 minute wait. We both really enjoyed the walk and saw a number of people en route.
Quite batty! Nothing unusual then :) Joking aside, I prefer these over a guidebook anyday.

Choupana resort was completely destroyed in the 2016 forest fires.

I was there a few months after the 2016 fire, the devastation covered a vast area right down to the suberbs of Funchal destroying many houses including Choupana Hills resort! There are many youtube videos of it. I was there again 2 months ago and was amazed how quickly the vegetation had regrown.
