Once you've got a few chords down and are strumming away happily enough you'll probably want to start fingerpicking. Here's a short video to help you on your way.
More info on this lesson over at ukulelego.com/tips/ukulele-fin...
In this video I look at 3 finger fingerpicking, I'll create another video for the 4 finger method shortly.
The ukulele I'm playing in this video is an Ohana SK-25 soprano.
Apologies for some of the editing - my son decided to have a conversation with me about Minecraft half way through filming.
If this video helped you it would make my day if you'd subscribe to the channel.
Finally you can find me in a few other places online…

This was mind blowing for me. It finally clicked how the uke was different for me. I play piano, violin, and guitar. They all have a progression of low to high, both in position and sound. Watching you made it so simple to understand the uke has a high note each end. Fascinating moment. I’m glad to have found your video. Thank you.
Ashley Buck I struggled when I first started playing ukulele, I was treating it like a guitar - it wasn't until I started playing it as it's own instrument that I really started to enjoy it
The Ukulele has reentrent tuning when it's tuned for High G
a tip: watch series on flixzone. Been using them for watching loads of movies during the lockdown.
@Franco Bryant yup, been using Flixzone for months myself :)
I just wish I could hit the "like" button again every time I return to this video. I know I'm going to revisit this probably twice a day for the next couple of weeks. I thought I'd Never be able to do any fingerpicking, but I am seeing improvement with practice. Thanks so much for this lesson!
SeanVplayer Thanks Sean, the like and comment are hugely appreciated. Glad to hear that it's working for you
I thought finger picking was some hard thing considering guitar is difficult for me but ukulele finger picking seems a lot easier now. Thank you!
aleksandrasteff It just takes a little patience and dedication
I'm trying to teach myself the ukulele and I just realized I was learning finger picking wrong. It's a good thing I just started to learn finger picking so it won't be to hard to switch into the right way.
There are a few ways to fingerpick so you maybe weren't learning wrong, you could just have been learning another way
@@UkuleleGo I'm not sure fingerpicking with only the thumb is a technique. If it is, google isn't helping me check .

Total new ukulele player here, got a few songs down and finger picking was totally intimidating until i watched this vid a few times. Thanks for making it less intimidating, really enjoyed the lesson. I actually sounded pretty ok.
That's great, finger picking sounds so difficult when you hear someone else doing it but with a little practice anyone can get it!
Thanks for being so clear and concise. I feel confident to try out fingerpicking. Great vid!
Ang Yvonne No problem at all!
AAAA thank you!! ive been playing for about 5 years and i just plucked for the first time thanks to you (:
That's fantastic, pleased I could help
Thank you so incredibly much for such clear, simple instructions. Recently got my new uke and wanted to practice slowly building up finger plucking along with strumming at the same time straight away. Sounds so lovely and within 15 minutes I’m able to play a basic song ❤️
Thanks for stopping by and also for leaving a comment, I really appreciate it
Thank you for the uncomplicated clear lesson. Even the video is clear and I can see what your fingers are doing. Very helpful!

Excellent video! I really like the second picking pattern, but it seems like it would be restricted to 3/4 time signature. How would you suggest doing the alternating G and C strings, but for a 4/4 time signature?

Hey, thanks for the great tutorial video. I've been playing an uke for couple of weeks now. Just starting to get comfortable with changing chords. This is my first time playing something that is not a rhythm instrument. Your videos are very very informative. Do you any suggestion for the order to learn things for an absolute beginner like me? Thanks again.
Thanks for the feedback and that is a great question. If you're already trying fingerpicking then it sounds like it's going well.
I actually don't think I have an ordered list anywhere as it largely depends on what your goal is as to what you need to learn. Sorry it's not a definitive answer.
@@UkuleleGo For now i don't have a definitive goal on this. I'm having fun with it and spending some quality time with the strings. Please continue to make great tricks and tutorials. Thanks
@@freehubadventure I definitely will be doing. If you've not explored music theory I'd definitely recommend looking at the basics, it's really unlocks a lot
@@UkuleleGo thanks, I'll have a look at it.
Wow...
Nice
Thanks!
Can I also use that if your a left handed? Btw thanks for the great tutorial:>
I get asked about left handed stuff a bit and you know I can never work it out. I mean in theory it's all the same but just flipped I guess. I could be wrong on that, but assuming you're playing a left handed uke and not a right handed uke as a left hander then I think it should be fine.
CZcams recommend me this video ☺ and I am learning ❤
I'm glad it's working for you
@@UkuleleGo fingerpicking is hard for me 😕 but I am trying ☺

Can you do another finger picking style? I got this one down 100 percent thanks to you! But I’m not finding anyone who explains it simply. Please please please 🙂
Hi Madena, I'm working on some new videos soon
When I started fingerpicking ukulele I started pluckind with only my thumb and now it's not comfortable for me to do it differently😞
For some songs that will work fine. Also, there are plenty of musicians over the years that played a little unorthodox and it never stopped them. Jimi Hendrix probably the most famous.
Hi I come from 5 string banjo experiences that I had to reluctantly leave due to personal problems.
I was studying fingersatyle T I M with thumbfingers and pretend.
I would like to know if I can use technique and fingers for tenor ukuleles as well.
Thank you
You can definitely play TIM, it's the technique I use most often when fingerpicking
@@UkuleleGo thanks a lot🙏
Is this pattern good and the same for all sizes of ukes?
The pattern will work for any ukulele, it'll sound a little different on a baritone or a low g ukulele though
been learning uke for about 2 years. honestly...in all that time, ive learned a few chords and a couole of patterns. cant even put together a decent tune yet. how do I progress?
It's all about setting realistic goals and working towards them. If you have a few chords and strumming patterns, work out what's just beyond your reach right now and work towards that. Maybe that's more complex strumming patterns or a little bit of picking like in my video.
I'd probably recommend grabbing yourself a book and working through that alongside anything else that you're doing. The beauty of a book is that it will have a clear, defined program working towards a goal.
I hope that helps you!
The best advice I can give (from personal experience) is to play with others as much as possible. Join a U3A Ukulele group, or a local pub - they will welcome you with open arms! Sitting at home with a book is boring, anti-social and will take you a lot longer. In the meantime try playing something like "Stand by me - Ben E king" just play the first verse - NO MORE THAN THAT TO START! Use a strum that fits this song very well such as DDU-UDU. keep it slow and do not try anything else until you nail this verse. Its like paying the mortgage off it will feel so good and once you have one song under your belt only then move onto others - it will then be a lot easier - good luck - enjoy !
Use the play along videos and play them all until chord switching is automatic. If vid is too fast pause it and play the hard bit over and over. Write hard parts down and do them over and over each day.
I like throwing myself into easy playalong videos without a tutorial aand praticing by repition to learn new chords. Also, there's ukelele tenor's very helpful ukelele bootcamp videos.
I hope I'll learn this. 😭
You will, it just needs a little patience
@@UkuleleGo thank you so much, Sir! I feel encouraged. 😭✨ Bless you!
@@PapurrPlays you're welcome, you got this
Hi . I notice on your other videos on finger picking that you play g and c with with your index finger . I thought you said only use your thumb on g and c strings .🤔
Hey Kath, there are a few techniques when it comes to fingerpicking, when you see me using my index finger to pluck the C string on other videos I'm switching to a 4 finger approach. This method is the one I would recommend learning after you get comfortable with the 3 finger approach I show in this video. Hope that helps.
Ok thanks
Why the A string sounds dead when i switching to Am😥
You're probably resting a finger on it accidentally
When he was picking the uke open, did anyone else think of the song from The Grinch that The Who’s sing in Whoville after Christmas was stolen?

how am i supposed to pluck all strings at the same time
Chocolate Cheeks You can use your thumb to pick the top string and your index, middle and ring fingers on the bottom 3 strings.
Thank you!!
Chocolate Cheeks No probs, did it work for you?
are not plucking all strings at the same time
are plucking one string after another string
one at a time
he looks so big for the uke. like a full grown adult wiht a child toy
It's good to know that I look like a full grown adult. I'm actually not that tall.
Ukulele Go LMFAO
ay I've got the same ukulele as you
Ah great, how do you like it? I've bought quite a few more and sold a few since I recorded this video but I still have this one

@@kyberstudios7358 careful, you'll end up with ten ukuleles like I did. I then sold five but have since acquired more. Five should really be my limit.

i cant figure out how to make it sound like a tune and not just a bunch of strings being pulled :/
tamagoraquel i felt like that too ! you should try and keep the rhythm going for a while until you get used to it. that’s how i got myself to make it actually sound good haha

Ukulele Go def no joke, i think you’re Great! more tutorials please
@@lisagordon6355 Well thank you very much for the compliment, I will be making more
I get really frustrated watching random beginner tutorials on youtube because everyone says something different. You say thumb is for 2 strings, other people say it's only for 1 and to use the three other fingers too, and I don't know who to believe, and I don't want to be taught wrong from the very freaking beginning
They're both legitimate, in my opinion it's easier to start with using your thumb for the top 2 strings and your index and middle for the bottom. What I would say is try both initially, see which one feels the most natural and go with whatever feels right to you. Once you get comfortable with that one, you can learn the other way too.
