HUGE Male Lion Shocks Audience with Display - Oregon Zoo

  • Portland Oregon's zoo put on a show for us with their male lion. They said this was the best that he has done in front of an audience. He made multiple hind leg standups and the human size comparison was shocking!
Just for clarity, it was described that the reason they were making the lion do all those motions that seem to look like tricks is actually the veterinarian doing a visual check on the lions paws, throat, teeth, and underbelly. It is better than sedation and he gets a snack. However I would agree that a zoo is no place for a magnificent creature like this.

Valid points. But I have such positive memories as a child of my local Zoo in Rotterdam, during the 1950's and 60's.It was all the entertainment we had.Thankfully that Zoo has been upgraded with demands of the changing times. Although it seems such regal creatures don't belong in a zoo, it seems they haven't such a bad time in this particular zoo. It's sadly indeed a rather different story in many other zoos around the world , where these animals are treated like shit.

I agree they are majestic, amazing creatures which we have no right to OWN. Sadly that being said, when lions or any other wild animal are raised in captivity they can't possibly be released into the wild. The major zoos in the US such as San Diego, Portland, DC, Columbus take AMAZING care of these animals and love them like they were their children, which could only continue to happen with donations and zoo visitors paying for their care and food everyday. Teaching kids about these animals in zoos is also very important because from an early age they learn to love and respect them. Lastly and by far the most sad part is most of these animals are much safer in zoos due to how EVIL the poachers are until the various African governments can get that under control I really don't see any good solution sadly :-(

In fact, this statement (except for the compliments,) is completely misguided. If this lion were released into the wild, he would likely be dead in less than a month due to never learning hunting skills or having a pride to hunt with. He is not caged, he has a plenty big space as the Oregon zoo is AZA accredited and therefore must follow their guidelines. Along with this, many species of animals (Lions included) actually have longer lifespans in captivity! Look it up.

The males in the wild have a short reign and then end up becoming nomads/scavengers at best and usually end up starving or are outright killed by other lions. In a zoo they don't starve. All zoos need to strongly enforce having visitors whisper or keep silent. It is so annoying hearing people, including children talking loudly. If humans are bothered by this I can only imagine how bothersome it is for the animals. I'd much rather be in quietness, listening to the animals.

    • @Sliverbane

Agreed. I speak quietly at the zoo and try not to cover up the sounds of the animals. So frustrating when people are yacking loudly. I remember missing the awesome call of a kookaburra because some brat starting shrieking when she noticed it was close to the catwalk in the bird section. The bird was about to sing then flew off as the girl starting shouting. I gave her a nasty look and moved on.

Obnoxious kids running wild because of obnoxious parents with no sense of respect for anything other than their little brats. Carlin said it right: there is entirely too much focus on children these days. Oh yeah, and the Disney references....yuk! The Lion King is not reality. Throw your kid in with the lovely Disney animals you see in the zoo and see how friendly they really are. Oh, they would just love my kid. Blaach! Giving people dirty looks is nice but maybe we should start to get a bit vocal.with these rude parents.

Zoos in the U.S. also help with wildlife conservation by breeding some animals that can be released. A few endangered species are only still in existence because of zoos. People care about animals when they can see them and learn about them as well.

If their numbers were many, then that wouldn't be a problem. Another lion would come and take his place, most likely his offspring, if he were successful enough to mate.
However, that's not the case right now. Poachers, trophy hunters, and a constantly changing environment, even moreso because of us, close in on them from all sides, threatening extinction of the most unnatural sort. Perhaps, though, one say when we learn to care for the land on which we live, we'll see so many lions out there in the wild that we'll have no need for zoos, as visitors would no longer be impressed.

They hunt with groups and they don't like waters.

BlazeBullet If you did deeper research on lion you'd know that there are cold climate rainforest lions in the Ethiopian mountains and mount Kenya where they're known for growing very large extravagant manes that extended past their belly, though they've been moved off parts of mount Kenya due to the protection of the critically endangered bongo antelope they're still found in the Ethiopian mountains. They're also in small areas of Gabon's jungle regions and in a forest area in Kenya called lake Nakuru where lions look darker and sturdier than lions in savannas, same with other forest ranges. In their non savanna ranges they're known for being in either groups of only 2 or 3 lions to even living solitary lives. The reason why you and many others do not know this is because savanna lions have gained more attention and have been shown more in popular culture plus savanna lions nowadays have a much larger population than non savanna lions, but in the past non savanna lions were very common.

wvufb77 wow lol. You really don't have a clue do you...what a sick, arrogant, self-centred species we are, as demonstrated clearly by your comment. We really believe that we run this planet and it's our right to imprison magnificent creatures in tiny cages so that we can try to "conserve" them, when they were doing fine before our interference, stealing their habitats and killing them.
The point IS, it would be better if humans had left them alone in the first place, and then we wouldn't NEED to have "encounters" with them and keep them in tiny enclosures (tiny compared to the open savannah), so that WE can decide we want to help them, because we've decimated their wild population to near extinction.
They were doing just fine before we came along, living natural lives. They are top of the food chain and were a thriving species. How INSULTING to them to now have to rely on a pathetic, puny species like humans in order for them to avoid total annihilation.
Yes they didn't have medical care but they were FREE as nature intended them to be. That is the most important thing. What use is medical care when you are miserable in a tiny cage 24/7..? Humans...smh. Do you think if they had a choice (that we don't give them), they would choose to be kept captive by us simply because they receive good medical care??
I'm not saying that zoos don't have a purpose, what I"m saying IS, it's a tragedy that we need zoos in the first place.

He weighs over seventeen thousand pounds and stands eleven feet at his back. He is one of the biggest elephants in the world. He is an Asian elephant. And he is Awesome!

j.d. Hogg yes, that's why I prefer the "safari" types of zoos where you drive through and the animals are more or less free. Even then, I guess they can't just let the lions roam loose, though. They'd eat up all the other animals in the place.

There's a middle ground between their facing extinction in the wild or being put in zoos. There are sanctuaries that do not keep wild animals in small isolated (from their own) enclosures the way some zoos do.

I used to feel depressed as I left the zoo when I was a kid. These animals are nature's beasts taken out of their habitat to amuse people. If rather see them in the wild basking in the sun or nothing at all.

In my eyes I would rather see them in a zoo where they're happy and well looked after and alive than in the wild being hunted, killed and dead. Would you? They're absolutely happy in there and don't know of their true home but its better for them to be alive than dead and extinct, eh?

    • @awksweat230
      @awksweat230 Před 10 lety +5

That's the thing, they are not happy. This is like prison for people with thousands of strangers yelling and teasing them behind glass or bars. Of course, if they lived in the wild, laws to protect them and their habitat would have to be upheld.

They don't know the difference between zoo and being in the whild so how can they feel sad about something they have no knowledge of? they wouldn't know what to do if you put then in the wild compared to other lions that grew up in the wild. the zoo lions would get killed very quickly by prides or they would starve cuz they wouldn't know how to hunt properly so zoo animals are better off in the zoo

Ryan Jennings I'm pretty annoyed that you said that. They're called "Wild" animals for a reason. I'm so sick of hearing people imply that wild animals are better off in captivity than in their natural habitats (which in some cases, I can agree with due to endangerment), but living behind glass walls and high risen chain fences where hordes of humans stare, bring their screaming babies, and shout obnoxiously is not natural. If they're born in that setting, of course they're not going to know what it's like to be out in the wild, but being in vast expanses of space where they get exercise, territory and no human interaction is what's best for them. Seeing a lion as a "natural" animal rot in an enclosure for the entirety of their life is not in any means 'worth seeing''.

My first thought was "Whoa! That is WAY too much noise for those creatures." But that's actually a very clever way to give the lions a quick check up.
Still too much noise though. I'd ask the people to not talk during the presentation. Less rumble on the ears, and the speaker wouldn't have to shout over them.

yeah she even asked him to open his mouth so she could check his teeth for any problems. They might be caged but if he had any problem he wouldnt survive in the wild so in some weird way, they are actually keeping him alive and away from both animal and human threats. But i agree, too much noise, should've asked the parents to try to be quiet. I understand tho, kids will be kids.
