      @@slashieboy Some rescue centres don't like doing that - if bad owners know they'll be prosecuted, they are less likely to come forward with sick animals. Sometimes an attitude of "give us the animal and we'll say no more about it" is the best way to help the animal.

    I fully support your plan to fix Zeema's leg. If she were elderly, or had major other issues (chronic, not the fixable like the bacterial infection) I would say leave it.. but people did the damage to her that left her disabled, and she deserves the chance to live the best life she can. So people need to fix it. I know from having had 13 myself, pain from surgery is temporary and can do immeasurable amounts of good in the long run.

    I think the rebreak is the right idea. She's young, and 15 years with it healed right is worth a few months of injury recovery, I was happy you guys went that way. Especially with the level of care she's got at AWM, I think she'd be likely to be up and going in no time.

    If you guys are really passionate about your job and are not just good to the animals on camera, then honestly you're all the best. It made me a bit emotional how kind you just were to the toucan in need, and all the accommodations you made to make it feel at home. I promise you if I get enough money when I'm a bit older with a job, I will donate a lot of money for this altruism. Anyone can just feed the pet and give it medicine, but what you did was something more. I can't express my gratitude enough, so keep doing what you're doing.

    Jesse is such a sweet mom to all the animals and birds she care for. She's so much of a role model to me (coming from the same initial career background, film making).
    I'm no more saving for a house of my own and hope one day I can afford to buy a piece of land to care for all these wonderful creatures. Went to get a German shepherd pup and brought back few birds to care for. It's a lot of work and patience but they make my life so cheerful. Feels like I have a purpose in life. I'm learning slowly. I hope everything will fall in place.

    I was given the leg choice with both my girls (tiels). Molly it was he wing, I chose not to rebreak her wing due to her already having issues with her bones and it would be a hard healing process and if she fell her legs would break. For Spirit it was her leg and hip, after a lot of talk with the vet we agreed that the surgery would not have helped much as she still had movement on her feet and could hold a perch safely. With softbills though their legs are so vital for movement and she's still young and will heal well, I think it's the right choice.

      Yes, in his next molt

    • @SeabassFishbrains
      @SeabassFishbrains Před 5 lety +51

      It may take a few molts, birds don't molt their primary feathers every time that they molt and sometimes with a clip job that severe, new primary feathers will break as they come in because they aren't fully supported by other feathers. With a clip job that severe it can take up to 3 years for some birds to fully regain their flight feathers but if they're lucky it can be just one year. This birdo may be extra lucky because she's a baby still and babies go through several molts in their first year of life (unlike adults who usually molt just once or twice a year) so those extra molts might give her a much needed boost.

    • @sarahloomis2034
      @sarahloomis2034 Před 5 lety +5

      A molt is when a bird sheds their feathers and grows new ones, usually not all at once, but enough that all the feathers will eventually be replaced. Then she’ll be able to fly again!

    • @SeabassFishbrains
      @SeabassFishbrains Před 5 lety +6

      @corral reaf Molting is when a bird loses some of their feathers and new feathers grow in to replace them, the new feathers come in as "pin feathers" which have a protective sheath around them, once the feather is mature the sheath will flake off as the bird preens itself and the new feather will unfurl from within the sheath, no feathers last forever so birds need to molt regularly. It's just like how snakes shed their skin and us humans are constantly shedding dead skin cells and growing new ones, because that's how we heal :)

      Thank you! And that's great to hear you're working with animals that need your love and care!

      @@animalwondersmontana You not only rescue animals, but also educate people about them. That's what we're doing too! I love the way places like yours are run! We're looking to expand into an actual facility to have more room to do presentations and classes in our own building :)

    I know, Zeema isn’t a parrot-type bird, but once she’s healthy will she be housed with Animal Wonders’ other exotic birds? Would they be able to provide some of the companionship she needs later on, or will she remain in her enclosure in your house?

      Toucans can actually be dangerous to other birds that are smaller than them. So instead of providing social companionship they would possibly be viewed as prey, and the little parrots might feel threatened.
      We are also keeping her separate because our parrots are positive for ABV and we don't want to expose Zeema to it. Once Zeema kicks the respiratory infection we'll get her into the vet for the leg operation and when she's under anesthesia we'll take a blood sample for lab work to see if she already carries the virus. That will help us know if we can reduce our quarantine procedures, or keep them up. It's just a waiting game right now. We're quite anxious to move forward but we have to wait until she's completely strong and healthy.
