On this episode of Breaking Trail Coyote has the amazing opportunity to feed a Baby Toucan!
The rainforest dwelling Keel-Billed Toucan is world famous for its beautiful colorations and amazingly disproportionate bill size. Some of these Toucan’s bills can actually amount for up to 1/3 of their entire body length! Wow!
Now this particular Toucan chick is extremely lucky because it was rescued by the Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary in Costa Rica after falling from its nest as a hatchling. Most birds in this situation would not have survived long but because of the all the hard work of the staff at the sanctuary this little beauty will grow up to make a full return to the wild! How cool it that?!
Oh and did we mention this chick has some serious personality to boot?

I think that is exactly WHY it makes the noise :) This (as well as the open beak) acts as a key stimulus to the parents who'd normally be feeding it. Goes for most birds.

This reminds me of when I raised a fledgling bluejay. I found it with a busted wing and the parents were ignoring it and being in an area with a lot of cats and such, I took him in and fed him a special diet and then taught him how to hunt for bugs when he was old enough and he followed me around on the floor squawking at me JUST like this toucan, constantly talking and talking all day! He finally was able to fly and now he stays in my backyard and, kid you not, perches on the chair when I'm outside having my morning coffee! Best part of the day sometimes!
How did you teach him to hunt for bugs?
And quite lucky that the wing could heal correctly to be able to fly again.
+ShadeSlayer1911 it was hard but so fulfilling and rewarding! I simply put bugs on the ground and let him find and catch them. He was fed a special diet as a fledgling and then when he could move better he started hunting live bugs, never had bird feed from a store :)

I've personally worked with both babies and adult toucans and have been clamped on by the bigger species of ramphastids and it is nothing more than a pinch. Toucans are classified as softbills, it's not that the bill is soft it's more about the diet these birds consume which is mostly soft fruits. Toucans don't really have the ability of clamping down hard, even when eating their natural foods they feed on in the wild. It takes many attempt to break open papayas. bananas, some foods that are small enough are swallowed whole such as figs. the longer the beak the less force, unlike a parrot which has incredible strength in their mandibles(beaks). Although one should be careful if the species tries to joust you, which is a very fast forward thrust of the beak, which if it nails you in the eye you are definitely gonna feel it. Also he mentions that there is cantaloupe, papaya, banana and pineapple. The citrus from pineapple would increase the intake of iron to the species which is dangerous, toucans have a very low tolerance to any fruit that produces citrus. Pineapple is not a natural part of this animals diet and will shorten this birds life unfortunately.
