    ABOUT THIS FILM
    ____________________
    Kestrel characters
Apollo, the male, is young and inexperienced. This is his first every breeding season and he is alternately either a little over excited or utterly overwhelmed. In contrast Athena, the female, is an older falcon and has possibly already raised chicks at least twice before. She has a no-nonsense approach to life and often gets impatient with Apollo's haltering attempts to please.
    Kestrel courtship
It is usual for male kestrels to look for nest sites and then call out for a female, hoping she approves of his choice. We pick up the story when I notice Apollo calling from a tree in a nearby ash wood, trying to attract a mate.
    Struggle to find a mate
Unfortunately, there is competition for suitable nest sites here and each time Apollo chooses a spot, another bird species occupies it before he can attract a female to it.
    Kestrel nest box
I decide to help Apollo out by building a new nest box especially for him. This nest was part of a wider project to improve the habitat in this woodland. Read more about it here: www.robertefuller.com/diary/t...
    Kestrel eggs
Within days of erecting my box, Apollo calls and Athena appears. They waste no time in settling down together and starting a family. Just 10 days after their first meet, Athena lays the first of their five speckled brown eggs.
    Turbulent beginnings
But Apollo's youth and inexperience often gets him into trouble with his new partner. Athena regularly berates him - watch her trap the poor male kestrel against the wall as she squawks at him for not bringing her food when he arrives to help incubate their eggs.
    Five kestrel chicks hatch
Apollo soon learns who is boss and, thanks to his diligent support, five tiny chicks hatch out. With five mouths to feed, there is no longer time for squabbles and this kestrel pair soon settle into a rhythm of hunting for and feeding their chicks.
    Tragedy strikes
But before long they more serious challenges to overcome. It has been a cold, dry spring and the rodents that these kestrels hunt are in short supply. The nights are also freezing, with regular hard frosts.
    Tough decision
As the food supply dwindles, Athena decides to join Apollo hunting. She needs to balance the need to keep her chicks warm with the need for food. It’s a tough decision to have to make and sadly two chicks perish.
    Intervention
I decide to help and begin to drop food into the nest to help the three remaining chicks survive. Thanks to Apollo & Athena's dogged determination, and with a little help from me, the three chicks survive.
    Kestrel chicks
Watching the chicks grow, and finally take flight is a heartening sight. After such a tough start in life these kestrels are already displaying the ferocity they will no doubt need to survive. Watch them squabble for food once Athena stops sharing it out fairly!
    Keep watching
You can continue to follow the lives of Apollo & Athena as they begin another breeding season on my live nest cameras!

Kestrels have a special place in my heart. My big brother brought home five babies when their tree nest was chopped down at his school. We fed them and raised them to adults. There were no places to get help back then about seventy years ago. We fed them liver because it was free from the butcher. They grew to be pretty healthy birds. Whenever Robert put his hand in the nest, the chicks backed up against the wall, sunk down their shoulders, their eyes got wide, they cried out nervously, and the little legs quivered with fear. I'm in Colorado and have 9 acres in the mountains with trees and other vegetation. We often hear owls and see peregrine falcons. The land is on the side of a mountain, so we can actually watch the falcons and other birds flying... from above. So I think making a nest or two and just leaving it to nature would be great. Any info is appreciated. Thanks for what you do for nature.

I've been a falconer off and on for 50+ years and I am still captivated by videos like this. Birds of prey are one of the most fascinating subjects. Most people don't realize just how hard these birds work to get a meal, even when they don't have additional mouths to feed. Kudos to helping them out with food; I would suggest in the future bringing them mice or small rats whole or provide a small feeding station nearby for the parents (we falconers do this when "hacking" young birds.
I still find myself providing meals for wild birds of prey as they passage through in the spring and fall (helps to keep them away from my domestic poultry and pigeons).

In times of famine humans "would feed on other humans". There's no would or could. They did it. All over the history there're tragic stories of people breaking the taboo to survive
The sad part of it is they usually didn't gain from it much. Usually people eat other people out of desperation. They feed on the already dead, those who were similarly affected by the famine. It means they didn't have much fat or even muscles anymore. So even breaking the taboo didn't provide much sustenance

Mammals are the only taxa with facial muscles that are designed for facial expressions. Evolutionarily this is thought to have happened to aid in communication and in suckling. While other taxa that have faces obviously have muscles present in them, this means that birds don't have the control/muscles possible to make facial expressions. As much as people like to anthropomorphize them ("he looks happy when you pet him!") it is not possible for us to tell really

Even the descriptions of these behaviors are problematic as they are inherently assigning a emotional trait to a behavior, ie "depression-like" implies that those behaviors are consistent with depression, but we can't confirm that those animals experience depression to begin with, making it impossible to reliably associate those behaviors with the emotional state.
I think it's a major issue with using animals, particularly non-primate animals, for behavioral research. It all basically boils down to assumptions and poorly evidenced interpretations. For example you can talk about a "mouse trying to get out of a cylinder filled with water", and the generally accepted interpretation of ceasing to attempt to get out as "depression-like behavior", when it could just as easily be interpreted as "preserving energy for future opportunities", which would be the polar opposite of a depression-based behavioral alteration! There's a ton of ambiguous behaviors like that which are inherently subject to biased interpretation by the researcher.
That doesn't mean that these studies or that field of research isn't without value, but I'm always astounded at the lack of questioning interpretations of animal behaviors when I read animal model papers. Even with more objective models, such as neural activity, there's still a huge assumption that the structures, individually and as an integrated whole, function similarly to humans - and we know this often isn't the case, as evidenced by the number of drug trials that showed results in animals, but flame out when tried in humans!

Robert... there's your children's book, sitting right in your lap - Thirty-six minutes, thirty-six pages. 👏

Thank you for trying to save the chick. I care for 10 different bird houses and 26 feeders on our property. Along with 3 bee hives and chickens. I love my wild bird houses the most. I currently have 3 with nests in them. I regularly leave cups of meal worms near the houses when I can tell the chicks aren’t eating well enough. I know it’s not right to intervene in wild animals but I do at least try to provide what little extra I can. I love watching baby birds growing up. Between my Bees 🐝 making super colonies and all the birds making homes in my property I’ve made a little Eutopia

Such a joy to see the 3 young kestrels with mum on the branch at 35:45. Nature is cruel, ruthless, perfect and beautiful all at the same time. Sometimes it's really difficult to reconcile the different ends of the spectrum. I guess that when the chick dies, it becomes a food source, especially if the others are struggling. Very sad but also shows us how strong the survival instinct is. Thanks Robert, another wonderful video. God bless you.
