This has instantaneously become one of my favorite CZcams videos of all time. It demonstrates what the internet can be at it's best. I had a key break off in the lock and I had no idea what to do. I was thinking it was going to be a $275 visit from a locksmith. Bill get's right down to business with a litany of professional and DIY solutions. I stopped midway because I already had heard 3 different methods I could attempt. It worked and the key was out. I then went back and watched the rest of it just so I could be amazed at the myriad clever and ingenious fixes that were employed by this entertaining and informative host.

Very informative video,. my only comment though is the broken key part youre extracting is almost flush to the lock face. If the key part is smaller and broken further into the lock your options of removal are much more limited since youre working in the dark so to speak. If you have the opportunity could you please do another video to explain how you would get the broken part out if its smaller, further in and cant be seen ?

I don't think it was mentioned in the video, but for some locks it will be impossible to get the key out of a lock if it's unlocked (whether the key is broken or not). So make sure to turn it to the 'locked' position before you start, usually a coin or the side of the broken key (that's outside the lock mechanism) will work.

Mate, this video saved my arse! My new French doors were sticking when trying to unlock, so for a week I was using my multitool's grips at 90 degrees, holding the very base of the key, to give enough force to unlock the door.
Tonight, my luck gave out, and the key snapped in the lock. I couldn't work out how to get the thing out. After watching your vid, I was able to use one of the tiny screwdrivers on the same multitool to pry the key out just enough for me to grip it with some nail clippers and pull the b'stard out.
I won't be using the brute force method, instead I'll ask the people who supplied the door a few months back to come and take a look at the lock. Me and my dogs (who were both desperate to get into the garden for a pee!) thank you!

Thanks Bill, my neighbor had broken off their key deep inside their entry door lock. I took your hacksaw blade idea and scaled it down to a scroll saw blade (very narrow profile), bent the side I was holding to a 90 bend, the blade slipped in beside the broken key and lock with a little wiggling, turned the bent side of the blade I was holding toward the broken key and genty pully until I could feel the blade grabbing, gave a tiny pop and the piece came right out. Thanks again, very helpful :-)

Yours and similar other videos (I have to say) helped a lot so thank you very very much.
I had to retrieve my key from a house door, that also had a little "gate-keeping" metal piece, so I first had to push that thing up and out of the way and then I used your suggestion to drag the key out, but by hooking the end of a paper clip.
So that can work too if someone doesn't have the other hooked instruments you showed.
    Thanks again.

A pointed steak knife worked for me after trying other utensils. I was able to pop it out far enough for me to grab it with my fingers.
