  • Tonight we cover the final 2 arcs of Mobile Suit Gundam AGE. Released in 2011 Mobile Suit Gundam AGE is an interesting take on the well known Gundam tropes. With a cartoony art style and 3 stories worth of material mashed into 49 episodes, does AGE hold up to the series best?

Asemu is still my favorite of the the three because he had the most potential in bridging the whole story. It's just a shame that none of the characters are truly given enough time to be fleshed out.

Call me crazy, but I really do like how Flit became an old racist against the Vegan. Seeing a Gundam protagonist age like that, when they never really had that "we're all just people!" awakening that most get, was an interesting subversion that I didn't expect of a kid-targeted Gundam show like AGE.

You want to know what one of the BIGGEST train wrecks that happened in the series as I watched this as it was coming out? During the final arc, the video game came out when there were 5 episodes left to go. The speed runners in japan went and speed ran the game and ALL the final plot points in the game played out in the series EXACTLY THE SAME WAY as they did in the game so there were massive spoilers for the final 5 episodes out there way in advance.

Gotta love how Kio caused way more death by a detail you neglected to mention.
Kio gives up the AGE system in exchange for some medicine for the terminally sick orphan girl, who dies shortly after anyway.

I think Zeheart is a perfect encapsulation of the problems with Gundam AGE. To me, at least, Zeheart should've been essentially Prince Zuko from Avatar the Last Airbender. An antagonist who begins his arc motivated by seeking the approval of his tyrannical father-figure but whose growth as a character leads him to inevitably rebel and join the protagonists. For whatever reason AGE... just didn't. Zeheart's gonna show up with his giant fucking metal dragons to start murdering en masse and you're going to like it. So why did we spend all this time with him? Just to have a Char clone to fit the formula?
The irony here is that AGE is clearly going for a younger demographic than typical Gundam. They could've done a story with a more idealistic setting where a pacifist-oriented protagonist feels entirely justified through measured worldbuilding and sympathetic characters on both sides they... just didn't.

@@557deadpool For one, having Level 5 produce the visuals - a company known for Ni nu Kuni, Yokai Watch, and Inuzuma Eleven games - is putting you in a visual style synonymous with works aimed at younger audiences. Having all the Vagan Mobile Suits designed after RPG monsters is also kinda... silly. Particularly the pink flying witch design of the Farsia, though the ogre robot is up there as well.
Then you have things which are just... childish. Like Flit's main rival being a 7 year-old evil gremlin child, characters like the Don Boyage and that whole Fardain gang war arc which just seems like a parody, or the AGE system creating class changes for the AGE-1 in a very monster-of-the-week Power Rangers kind of way. The Flit and Asemu's arc especially have a lot of silly moments which are punctuated by serious one until you get to the Kio arc which is predominantly serious at the expense of Kio who wasn't really capable of carrying it.
This was a major reason why the Gunpla didn't sell well, the demographic who buys gunpla - 20-35 year old men - were alienated by the aesthetic and apparent kiddish-ness of the whole production, even though AGE kits are objectively pretty high quality even to contemporary standards.

@@557deadpool The designers at Level-5 was predominantly known for making soccer and toy robot video games/shows aimed specifically at children. The characters are made younger than the traditional Gundam cast. The aesthetic and the narrative stakes of the first generation are more like an adventurous show than a military drama. Gundam AGE *looked* and *sounded* like a shounen action anime made for kids, and that sentiment held true until the show went Elfen Lied on the viewers for the sake of living up to Gundam's reputation of being "grim and gritty."
The only good explanation I have for this is to drive shock value: the "kiddy show facade" and deception that became very popular back when Magical Girl Madoka Magica was aired several months prior in 2011. The difference is that Madoka Magica knows how to subvert and deconstruct its cutesy magical girl genre to drive a genuine drama, whereas Gundam AGE ends up all over the place between being a U.C. clone royalist, a deconstructionist, and an edgelord tryhard that willingly splatters cute girls onscreen just to prove it's a serious show. This anime suffers a lot because it simply doesn't know what it wants to be.

    Fun fact about Gerrard:
Super Robot Wars BX openly ships her and Akito from Nadesico as a thing since she's introduced earlier. In fact, it was memed so hard that people actually took the flashbacks from Prince of Darkness and edited Gerrard's face onto Yurika.
They also arguably do a better final boss, assuming you get the Age secrets, since they make Zanald (Vagan with the not-Gorillia MS) the final villian with him overthrowing Ezelcant AND Zeheart in a coup. He even gets taken out, should you get the secrets, with a Zeheart + Asemu combo attack.

"Why don't they just move Second Moon?" When I watched the show when it was airing I thought the main Vagan population was living on the surface of Mars. The idea that they were all on a colony that could have flown anywhere is so bad I think my brain just blocked it out.

You forgot to mention how unlucky with love this series is. Its the most unlucky with love anime to date I think.
    Yurin and Flit (Yurin dies)
Flit ends up in whatblooks to be an unhappy marriage with Emily
    Zeheart and Romari
Wolf and the Diva's captain (Wolf dies in a completely survivable situation)
Obright and Remi (Why must it be this way)
Asemu marries Romari and goes off to be a deadbeat dad space pirate
That test pilot who lost her fianceé
    Abis and Natora (Abis dies)
Zeheart and Fram (they both die in the space of an hour), Romari still cares about him
    I'm probably forgetting some too😂

35:44 - Jesus Christ, anime treats supporting women characters as well as American comic book writers do, as in NOT AT ALL! Seriously though, I fully agree that despite its popularity and anti-war themes, a lot of the Gundam franchise' body count feels like underwritten melodramatic theater, losing whatever emotional impact in turn.
That aside, thank you for all you mecha retrospectives and review videos.

    • @riptors9777

I think the biggest issue is how blatant and obvious it is and what it wants to achieve? I mean in a war story its kinda expected that people can and will die suddenly and unexpectedly.. but when you see the death flags from miles away like a shining beacon in the dark... not only does it lose any meaning when they do bite the bullet... you as the viewer feel like the author is simply taking you for a sucker...
Any sympathetic and adorable side character that gets a little bit more screentime then other side characters is basically one huge deathflag... it couldnt be more obvious if they wore red starfleet uniforms in a star trek episode...

I think Natora despite her unfortunate name is one of the most under appreciated characters in the overall franchise. Up there with Roberto Gomez in Victory. I think she offers a unique and relatable perspective, especially if you have ever been thrust in a leadership position because you're the only person with the credentials for it.

I will still say that AGE is an interesting speedrun of all of Gundam present up to the point of the show's airing. While Flit's arc was largely First Gundam with a dash Gundam X and minor references to other entries, Asemu's arc is very much Zeta Gundam with a dash of War in the Pocket, Stardust Memory and ZZ. Kio's arc is very much Victory Gundam with a dash of Crossbone, CCA, Turn A, Seed and Unicorn (special thing to note is that the entire show has Unicorn shoved into it from Woolfe's Genoace Custom looking like the Unicorn's Unicorn mode, to Kio seeing life on the enemy's side ala Banager).
I recommend watching the Memory of Eden OVA which makes both Asemu's and Kio's arcs better.
Shanalua is a spin on Miharu's story (spy for the enemy for money for youger sibling(s), decides to do the right thing but dies). Remy is actually a reference to the mechanic, Milly Childer, on board the La Vie En Rose in ZZ (I'd say Remy had a bigger role comparatively since Milly was barely around in ZZ). The AGE-FX's FX Burst is a reference to Layzer's V-MAX system activating.
Some extra story bits that add to the show are actually in the PSP games. In particular, during the first time skip, Flit had actually fought Dole before. What's interesting about it is that it took place before Asemu was born and Dole pilots the Wiegel which is the direct predecessor of Desil's Khronos.

You could legitimately use that reasoning for the entire series. If it was initially planned on going for a year and a half like he said in the first part and being cut to only 1 season it explains all of the pacing issues throughout. Unnecessary parts taking longer due to it already being fully flushed out, important parts being cut completely due to episode restraints, all of it.

If I could rewrite AGE I would’ve had Desil not die in part 2 and be the final villain have to where the two sides are about to come to cease fire Desil and his followers pull a coup and attempt to crash the second moon into the earth colony drop style.
As for Asemu and Zeheart I’d have it that Asemu disgusted with his father’s draconian actions decides to defect and even work with Zeheart to ending the war peacefully by supporting the anti war movements in both sides.

I stand behind the statement that Gundam Age is just an attempt at a shortened retelling of Gundam, Zeta Gundam, ZZ Gundam, through to Char's Counterattack. I think that's a big part of why it's not great. The show's trying to cram almost 150 episodes of older anime plus a movie into 50 modern episodes. The actual production fact that Age was originally meant to be a Gundam video game doesn't help either.
Mostly I just think Age had some decent ideas that are executed poorly. Dragon mobile suits had me so hyped for this when it was still in previews, but the show does not deliver. :(

Of all the arcs in the series, the asemu arc is the best as being the most consistently paced, better characters, and more engaging action(somthing I think sunrise agrees on as the compilation film is based around this arc). Unfortunately the kio arc is when everything went off the rails in terms of story, character motivation, plot lines that didn't need to be there, wasting of characters and such a rushed ending that made everything seem inconsequential. Gundam Age was the victim of an ambitious premise but botched on execution.

Thr thing I can't get over about AGE is that when Flit *overthrows his own government* at the end of the second arc, he would have learned everything his son and grandson learn during the third arc off-screen. AND HE MUST HAVE HELPED COVER IT UP!
Flit and his son both decide to prolong the war for another 20 years - which gives the Big Bad the Eugenics War meat-grinder he's actually after.
Meanwhile, researching a cure for Martian cancer, relocation aid, or providing better radiation shielding would erode the Martian government's control over their population and make *Vegans* nore open to peace.
Flit should have considered it just as a strategy to weaken the Vegan will to fight.

He could have also have been the final antagonist to stop. Basically Kio and Asemu fight to stop Flit from committing genocide.

AGE, while not the best, I still think is worth at least watching

I think the final arc of age would had turned out better if Bandai and sunrise did give a middle fingers to the series and cut asamu and koi arcs down a total of I think was 13 or 24 episodes,I can't remember which right off hand because of bad merchandise sells in the first arc -_-

@@perceptor1525legally probably not. Due to shiro deserted the federation and considered as a deserter and if he decided to reappear in anywhere feddie occupied in would be kill on sight
And Aina would be considered "kill in action" due to she haven't return to Zeon officially. Honesty any zeon soldier in 08th team show is actually dead. Because feddies shot the spacecraft that housed wounded soldiers or died in the area before.

38:27 "But I don't want to cure cancer. I want to turn people into Dinosaurs!"
In all seriousness Gundam AGE sounds like a dumb show with a wasted premise. Multiple generations of protagonists from the same bloodline fighting an ongoing evil force with reoccurring menaces coming back to haunt the new heroes like a cursed heirloom? Oh wait we have that it's called Jojo's Bizarre Adventure! I mean it could work but a lot more thought needed to be put into it. I mean come on the main villains are basically the Jovian Federation from Martian Successor Nadesico only these guys aren't supposed to be funny! At least not intentionally. Jeez, I bet the reason why most in the west give SEED so much grief is because they haven't seen AGE, Victory or G Reco.

And then things go wrong. Now maybe I could forgive the whole Asumu arc being a diet coke Seed and maybe I could forgive the idea of all of the later love interests being very weak along with Natora Anus having the worst name for a female captain I ever heard in the third arc.........But Kio is where I draw the damn line. So many things that I just don't even like Eszancunt's evil plan, wasting time on a pointless character for several episodes, Asumu's idea to leave his family to be a Johnny Depp, Flint being outed for hating the enemy despite the fact that it was their fault everything went to shit for him along with his rage being completely justifed and Kio not shutting up about we must understand each other while being given a powerful gundam AND not learning his damn mistakes like he really was Kira Yamato mark 2. The whole series really was rushed in retrospect like damn.

    • @riptors9777
      @riptors9777 Před 7 měsíci

Flit being justified is a bit of a stretch. His hatred and willingness to genocide an entire civilisation stems from the fact that one asshole killed his first childhood crush, because until that moment in time he was just trying to protect his home from an invading force... oh and said childhood crush was a member of the civilisation he wants to eradicate... making his desire to wipe out the Vaegans down to the last man, woman and child even more nonsensical

  • @Phantom6.6.6
    @Phantom6.6.6 Před 7 měsíci +1

Age 1 was good age 2 was even better but I just could not enjoy age 3 at all. The show felt so rushed near the end of age 2 and throughout age 3. This anime could've done so much better with a few more episodes to work with so age 2 and possibly age 3 could've turned out even better.

AGE has some timely stuff as I'm seeing the two sides that have generations of hate and can't help but think of how I see things like that in conflicts going on in the real world at the moment. Still...good god did they drop the ball with everything in the last half with Kio being the worst parts of Kira and a joke of a final boss...though I guess unlike some later entries we at least have a final boss. Still, best of luck with the next video.

Should've used asemu and zeheart relationship to solve the story. Should've made ezelcant the big bad as he brainwashed all vegan and zeheart to repent and somehow work together with the mcs lead them to peace. Should not kill likeable character with the most boring reason such as seric and wolf. Should've had better character design not to childish looking like inazuma eleven.

The motivations and actions of the Vaegir are just so friggin stupid... it ruins the entire plot of the whole series... also the amount of throwaway characters that simply exist to emotionally manipulate the viewer in blatantly obvious ways is unreal, every chapter of the story someone (usually a female) dies to motivate the protagonist to be even more of a moron then they allready are! Thats why no one WANTS to remember AGE.
And while we are at "stupid motivations" lets put the cherry ontop for the Vaegir shall we?: In the final chapter we learn that A) they could have moved their colony simply away from mars to literally anywhere else in the solar system.. or b) used the EXA-DB to clean up mars atmosphere (why does cleaning the atmosphere of mars suddenly remove the cancer rays.. and why does it even matter since the colony was moved away?) but instead decided to go C) use stupid amounts of resources that could have been used to improve the living standards of their people to build super death machines in order to go full genocide against people who have nothing to do with their plight and didnt even knew they existed.... hell its even doubtfull that many people who directly work for the federation even knew about the abandoned colony project...
And then theres the pitifull poverty the Vaegir live in....
I mean the cancer rays is one thing... but why does the populace have to wallow in poverty in what looks like some middle eastern slums during the dark age.. when they can produce warships and mobile suits that are so advanced and ahead of the technology curve that the federation at first thought they where friggin aliens? You tell me they can produce entire colossal superweapons.. but cant give the people some decent housing? And why is it the earth federations fault they live in a shithole? They clearly have the most modern production technology available to mankind at the start of the story.... why is everyone poor, dirty and lives in houses without even a single AC unit?
They tried to tell a anti-war story, but hamfisted it so bad with these nonsensical plothole filled motivations from everyone... and i didnt even talk how Flit was willing to genocide an entire civilisation down to the last man, woman and child... because one asshole killed his first childhood crush... WICH WAS FROM THE SAME CIVILISATION! XD
Nobody makes any friggin sense in this story....

I don't really mind the idea of Kio (or any Gundam protag) fighting to disable rather than kill, since in practical terms that more less achieves the same results as fighting to kill the pilot, so if they have the capability to do it, it's not as naive as I think people say. The problem is the execution of it, is terrible. Literally every other time Gundam did this with one of it's protags , it was done better than with Kio.
