    Hygogg was definitely in my top 3 favorite Zeon mechs. Sort of how they made the Gelgoog a more advanced version of the Zakus, I kind of wish they had taken the MSM-03 Cbis in the same direction, making it the successor to Hygogg and upgrading it visually and aesthetically, maybe a coat of red paint and a commander fin horn adorned above the eyes.

    bis means twice in Latin and is commonly used in Russian fighter planes to denote a variant that had enough upgrades to deserve a new name but not enough to get a new number. so a late production mig 21 would be called mig 21 bis so one would quickly know that it is a late version with upgrades. on another note, I really hope you do a video on the zee zulu some day, as it's one of my favourite mobile suits ever! oh and merry christmas!

    You actually struck the nail on the head: in its earliest incarnation the Hygogg was supposed to the the MSM-05/B, apparently named “Gock” or something like that, which would make it a machine unrelated to the Gogg… or the AMX-109 Capule. I mention the later because apparently one of the reasons the Hygogg became a relative of the Gogg was to serve as the missing link between it and the Capule… which doesn’t make as much sense one you put the claim to the test.
    Case in point, the Capule is often criticized due to forgetting the most important lesson that OYW amphibious MS learned: put weapons on the arms, not just on the torso!
    The Gogg’s main problem, that can be quite evident in games that tried to take a more realistic approach, is that in order to aim its weapons, you have to rotate the entire MS, which is already a high demand for such a… chubby MS.
    The Acguy, Z’gok, Hygogg and even the Gogg derived Jurick did correct this issue.
    Probably the most glaring exception is the Zock, but that already is in a weird pseudo MA classification, and perhaps the idea was that its hovering system combined with its symmetrical weapon placement would allow to easily overcome such problem.
    Anyway, the Capule ignored the above and went back to torso & head mounted weapons (the later which the Gogg also had in the form of two phonon masers).
    Granted, the Capule is a much more agile design than the Gogg, both on Earth and water (the later is put to question on background information, but in practice the Capule from ZZ proved to be quite mobile), so it can deal with this limitation a bit better.
    Ultimately though, even the more “primitive” people from Turn A Gundam that adopt the MS as its mainstay unit quickly realized this shortcoming and corrected it, adding guns to its claws. Shame on you Axis/Neo Zeon for not realizing & correcting such an evident problem!
    Anyway, I’m actually a bit confused on when the Hygogg was introduced, given that some works such as Blue Destiny make it look like it was around in larger numbers and at a much earlier date than what War in the Pocket would suggest.
    Looking at the Z’gok’s development line, supposedly Zeon first deployed the vanilla MSM-07 Z’gok, then replaced with with the MSM-07S Z’gok, which by some accounts had beam guns on both claws unlike the base model (and optional 4 claws hands according to some gunplas) and finally was supposed to replace the later with the even better Z’gok E.
    Personally I would be fine if the Hygogg was meant to be introduced around the same time as the S-Type Z’gok, leaving just the Z’gok E as the one amphibious design that was introduced “too little too late”.
    The backstory of the UMP already considers that some units introduced by the middle of the war, such as the Zaku F2, were labeled as UMP-complaint, meaning that even though they didn’t fully embraced the idea concept of the UMP, they began implementing some aspects of it. That’s a topic worth of its own separate conversation.
    Lastly, some sources, the Journey to Jaburo game from PS2 and some editions of the Gundam Encyclopedia IIRC, actually say that the Gogg & other amphibious MS, as well as the later Gelgoog, already switched to Titanium Ceramic composite. Unfortunately games tend to be considered gray canon and the encyclopedia has made many changes to the official info, sometimes back and forth, with their different releases.
    I do will say that on Zeta and ZZ, the RMS-117 Galbaldy Beta and the MS-14J Regelg both use regular titanium alloy, so my take is that the original idea was for both the EF and Zeon to switch to this material late in the OYW, and both kept using it until the EF replaced it by the time it introduced the GM II & Hizack, while Axis went straight to gundarium gamma. In other words, titanium ceramic composite being available earlier would be a retcon introduced with War in the Pocket.

      Yea the capule just odd, filled with so many oddies and the idea it got produced with no hand range weapons is crazy, how it beacame like that raises so much questions and its overall gameplan is confusing. I do love how the turn a people had to deal with the hand dealt to them and use it wonder what neo zeon would do if they gave the guy another go. Hopefully the would just go back to the hygogg and work them there
      I do remember hearing about the Gock for the hygogg but couldnt pin point where. In another would maybe the jurick is the upgraded gogg which would give him the spotlight I do think it deserves, I do like my dumb expensive gorilla.
      I always have trouble with dates since so much happens in the short last months of the OYW it becomes comical, am pretty sure a zgok E appears in a johhny ridden manga but I dont think the hygogg is shown in much if any.
      also while not looked at as much as other sources you can find alot info in games and model kit manuals sadly we left the era of ps2 gundam games which was filled with info like j2j or encounters in space,

    The Hygogg appeared in Gundam Battle Assault 1 & 2 as a playable robot and appeared as an enemy in the first stage of Last Resort from SNK (at least they took lots of inspiration from it). Great design, never understood why you would build a robot in shape of a human.

    Bis is used in Soviet and Russian planes to say a "second" type, like improved type so I assume the C-bis here is the same. Also the C deosn't stand for anything it is more a progressive improvment like in the Zaku II in that the first production run would be the MS-06, then the next with improvments would be the MS-06 B etc.

    • @RolandTHX
      @RolandTHX Před 8 měsíci

      @user-xb1wh5mt4l Před 8 měsíci

      @@RolandTHXBis is a French word which is used in European sources for Soviet plane 'second models'. In Russia it's either just a 'year pattern' (year of first production, usually designates really old military tech) or some numerical/letter designation attached (sometimes with a hyphen) to the original designation.

    Thanks for a great video. I'm an outsider to Gundam as a whole, but I'd seen the Hygogg a couple times and thought it looked pretty cool. So I'm happy to get some easy to digest information on it.
    Just a couple of my thoughts: I think the Hygogg's arms are weird because it has the beam cannons in its "wrists." You can't exactly bend those cannons, so it instead has the long bendy arms. That's probably why it has the long arms as well, so that it can aim the cannons without interference.
    I don't think your design is a worse version of Xeon or a worse.... whatever xaku. I think it's design would be much cooler that either of those. Especially if you keep the ferrings that it uses when carrying the hand missiles. I picture the S-Hygogg (which can stand for Space or Sloth, whichever you choose) having been developed to easily go between space and a planet's surface with ease (making them essentially keep their roll as amphibious units). The hand missiles would be replaced by booster rockets for more speed until it entered combat. Then the boosters could open up and deploy as satellites to boost communications and provide support while leaving the S-Hygogg's hands free for combat.
    But that's just my ramblings. Still a good video.

    • @slothcakes
      @slothcakes  Před 8 měsíci

      Thanks for the input its alway nice to see a outside perspective on things.
      first thats a nice idea for a space hygogg i like the hand booster unit idea
      second why its compared to the zeong and psy comm zaku is that those guys hands can detach via wire connection and go far out and shoot from a distance and the zeong is a massive powerhouse with each finger tip having a powerful beam cannon and also having one on its mouth and chest and the psycomm zaku being a weaker prototype version. While my space hygogg might look cooler than that they do its job much better. But the S-Hygogg does have legs which neither of thoses have so walking on a surface is a +1 for the S-hygogg

    • @strcmdrbookwyrm
      @strcmdrbookwyrm Před 7 měsíci +1

      @@slothcakes That makes sense. Thanks for sharing with me what makes the Zenog and Psy Comm Zaku so good. Again, it's information I didn't know before.
      I'm glad I could add a bit more to the S-Hygogg idea, even if there are better space Mobile Suits out there. The idea does have both a level of charm and "Rule of Cool", and I think it's fun that it being repurposed for space combat could just as easily be from within the story as it is without.

      Many reasons both in universe and meta reasons.
      One to note is that in the original series zeon played the roll of antagonist. What is more antagonizing and intimidating than something lurking under the water.
      Or that in universe zeon based much of its ideas on history, a common thread in these histories is a Naval military tradition (partially influenced meta-contextually by the island nature of Japan the origin of gundam and their own culture and history.)
      I could go on and on, but I'm sure you understand.

      The title will probably be something like "Zeon's winter/postwar/resistance morale boosting transport a.k.a. the Pen-Gogg!! With a megaparticle cannon in its mouth and with a heat beak to help with cooling, beam flippers with sub arms, stealth coating, and 360 firing arc it is one of the best in resupplying under the feddie's radar with its fish(weaponry/whole parts) and chips(ammo/consumables/fuel)!!"
      Something along those lines. The only others i have in mind on working as an animal like ms is a manta ray(using epyons' wings and shield) and a bird(using the wing gundam). I believe there was one other i thought up, but i lost the notes i had, so this is what i got.

      The B Probably either stands for Base or battleship, the I stands for interception/interuption, and the S should stand for series/system/setup. I doubt the s should stand for a commander unit, but maybe special would be another alternative as its either a custom job or for special forces.
