  • Since the inception of Anime as a medium Mecha has been a powerhouse genre that produces hit after hit. While the prominence of giant robot fueled cartoons has waned in the last decade, it is a genre that has an incredibly storied history and today we begin our look back at the start of it all.

I feel like I should mention that this is in no way replacing full length retrospectives, and is just something I thought would be fun. this series will cover anime that I have already done videos on, and being featured in one of these videos does not mean that I won't do a full video on it. Enjoy!

It's pretty cool how Tezuka created the archetypal Shounen protagonist design. Like, you could probably draw a line between Atom/Astro and say, Deku from My Hero Academia pretty easily. That's pretty wild, how much one work of art could seed the imaginations for generations of future readers and artists.

11:40 super sentai AND kamen rider, which is actually the one he is more associated with as he (reportedly) had more influence the early seasons of Rider than Super Sentai.
Rider also sticks a lot closer to his signature themes (down to the whole 'kidnaped humans turned into cyborgs for an evil organization thing that is also in cyborg 009)'

The CZcams channel MercuryFalcon has a good video about 70s mecha if you're interested. He was upset that most people go straight from Mazinger Z to Mobile Suit Gundam when talking about the history of Mecha.
I've been diving into Osamu Tezuka's manga, he's made some great stuff over the years, especially from the late 60s onward.

14:40 OH MY GOD, I finally know why the final boss of the near future chapter of Live-a-live is a giant anthropomorphic bird statue.
That chapter is a gigantic callback to 60 through 80s mecha and cyberpunk anime and manga, so it makes sense they would reference cyborg 009 too.

Something kinda interesting, parts of the Astro Boy aesthetic came from seeing Metrapolis stills and applying new ideas to it, much like how Hidetaka Miyazaki (of Dark Souls fame,) came to adopt his own unique style of storytelling.
This is also rather ironic, as Metrapolis was heavily altered (even losing whole subplots,) so the people who watch it basically have to do the same thing anyway, despite its own massive influence on media that came after...

I am only now just noticing that Dr. Tenma from Monster is named after Tezuka's Tetsuwan Atomu doctor/inventor lol. Also, it is super important to watch older anime and movies because the current zeitgeist is not all-encompassing. It lacks a circumspect worldview and has a tragically short term memory. To paraphrase Goethe, "He who cannot draw on (X) years is living from hand to mouth". There is a reason why Sunrise/Bandai have been making antiwar Gundam series again and again since the late 70's. Before Augus Mikazuki, Marida Cruz and Guel Jeturk, there was Ryu Jose, Four Murasame and Bernard Wiseman.

My friend and I were talking about mecha animes yesterday. We both felt like gundam was at it's peak from its inception up until around 2000. From there on you would get some stud and dud series. Gundam seed(dud), gundam 00(stud), 8th MS team(stud) etc. Weirdly, there were aot of obscure titles in the 2000's such as Gundam Neo Experience 0087: Green Divers that are never talked about and have been in a way, lost to time. The gundam series in the past decade or so have been very hit or miss.

I wish you dove deeper into Cyborg 008 more. His depiction and depictions of Black people in the 50s and 60s was only surface level. Manga took the time to explore the inequality towards Black people in its time. 008 was a slave (if I remember correctly), Blackjack talked about the civil rights movement in America and so on.
A lot of comics outside of America used blackface for Black people because they were coping from the industry leader (America). But everyone didn't reduce black culture to a stereotype.
