  • Cleaning turkey spurs- A quick and easy way to clean up and whiten turkey spurs. I left my spurs in the freezer so they took a little bit longer to boil. Fresh spurs will boil off much quicker.

    That's a cool idea! I've got a some turkeys from the last few years I haven't done anything with yet. One guy I saw made a "shadow box" with cypress wood. He had the fan, beard, pictures, a shell and other sort of things in there. Something like this necklace of spurs would be cool to add. I don't know why I never thought of adding a picture, but that really hit me as something quite meaningful. Thanks for sharing this!

    I generally followed this video but I made 2 errors.
    First, I added a tiny bit of dish soap during my initial soak of the spurs (to loosen the skin.) This resulted in the spurs losing their rich dark color. I let them sit for a long while and the skin came off easily.
    Second, the skin came off so easily that it pulled the "sheath" of the spur completely off. So now I have one continuous piece of white leg bone and white spur.
    It's not a total loss. I can still display them. Just a good story of trial-and-error taxidermy by a novice. And if I really wanted to I could repaint the spurs somehow.

    Going to make one for my wife for our 20th and wait for it........divorce court. Nice hooks on those birds. Way longer than any I have. Very rocky where I hunt and I think it wears them down.

  • @WesLovelace

    What Spurred you on with this Whitnin' Formula!! Would the Combo bleach out the Color of the Spur itself rather than just the Bone if the Entire Spur was immersed!! Thanks 4 sharing.... Liked & Subscribed....

    • @HuntAppalachia1
      @HuntAppalachia1  Před 6 lety

      Back when I did alot of taxidermy this mix is what I used on skulls. It will take the color out of the spur so you have to be careful to wipe any off if it gets on the "nail".
      Thanks for watchin and subbing!!!

    • @HuntAppalachia1
      @HuntAppalachia1  Před 6 lety +2

      I dont really do much with them. RIght now they are all in a shoe box. HAHA Ill have to make a video going over some of the ones Ive killed. Since I built my house I have never really designated a "trophy" room. So my stuff is kinda scattered.

    Are you removing the cover off the spurs itself to expose the bone? Or just the scales on the leg?

    • @HuntAppalachia1
      @HuntAppalachia1  Před 3 lety +1

      Just removing the skin, meat/fat off the bone. The actual nail of the spur stays on. I have accidentally had them come off. No big deal you can just glue it back on.
