Your "Waterproof" Phone ... Isn't

- You only need to drop your phone off a boat, or into a puddle, or -yes- into a toilet once to wish for a world where all smartphones are waterproof. The good news: these days, a lot of them are at least *water-resistant*. The bad news: they’re probably not as resistant as you think. In this video, we'll learn how to decode IP ratings to find out how much water your phones, laptops and watches can really handle - and we’re gonna talk to the Grand Marshal of Gear Destroyers himself, Mr. JerryRigEverything, to learn how water wrecks your gadgets … and what you can do about it if it does!

You mean Tony Stark and Johnny Sins?

I don’t get it. But I’ll like it anyway

Hey man, what a surprise to see your comment here haha
so true bro
jerryrigeverything and mrmobile rule
Agreed!
Thanks my friend!
Dang you snatched up the comment I was thinking of typing!
If you dropped your phone off a boat I don't think it matters if it's waterproof.
depends if you dive after it
or buy a new one.
Yeah they said a quick submersion won’t do anything at all but then after you gotta make sure you’re in shallow waters
If it was like Altek Lansing speakers it wouldn't matter because those float. Can attest they are hyper resilient. Sadly floating phones are unlikely bc they are basically bricks of plastic, glass, and metal with no notable air pockets or buoyant material present.
Salt water will destroy all phones, even ip68 phones
Lemme guess... *scratches at a level 6 with deeper grooves at a level 7*

If my phone fell in to the toilet after taco Bell, that phone can be IP99 but it will still instantaneously disintegrate
@AlexisBubba15 The joke here is that their tacos give diarrhea and if his phone fell on his diarrhea then it would dissolve as it was on acid.
Fun fact ive never once gotten diarrhea from taco bell I know others who havenf either.
@@gabeel486 I don't even know what it is
Your comment made me laugh out loud
It's funny because IP69k is the max

I decided to finally test out my lg q7+ in the shower and soon after when i open the YT app, this is the first video being recommended
Phone is telling you not to intentionally get it wet again man!
On my last phone that wasnt had ip rating, i was regulary jogging and rain started, well after one day my display become rainbow, now i have xiaomi mi 8 lite and will be very careful with it
FBI is watching you
the phone knows....it’s intelligent
That might be the microphone that heard this. (That also proves that Google is listening to everyone so I both taped the microphone and put a sticker on the webcam of my phone)
That's why you put your phone in a ziplock before filming underwater
Bad idea. It's possible any air causes it to burst. This can also happen if you jump into the water with a waterproof pouch. It just has a blowout and turns into a fishtank with your phone soaking in it. I found this out the hard way.
i tested a ziplock bag before by placing only the case in the bag. i only could do like 5 minutes and only 3 - 4 bags was able to keep water off the phone. and it was hard to use the phone. then i got a phone case rated at ip68 instead
Navtej Singh but why even use your phone underwater, if you want pictures underwater gopro’s exists and are also something that is advertised as take this underwater for a cool photo if your calling or actually using your phone in the water, why?
@Doctor Whos i disagree with that many people do for very mundane things now people will buy a product for everything and if your willing to bring a possibly $1k phone it's on you if it breaks because you didn't want to get a go pro for underwater
@Doctor Whos never said that but the people who own iPhones and are traveling and want to take pictures underwater they got money don’t throw words in people’s mouths
Love it; you guys should definitely do another collaboration video for sure; especially from two guys that do their research based on facts and share them very unbiasedly. Hard to find that on CZcams these days.
Why all the tech youtubers have smooth voices ?do they use some kind of tech or special mic?
Rinbow 6 BR Auto-tuning to some extent of their voices, helps them to do so. The soft voices, with moderate decibels are good enough to hear for even long time.
No auto-tune here. :) But I do use a nice mic, recommended to me by SomeGadgetGuy - the AKG C414XLS. I just add a bit of treble to cut through the music. Also, I was a voiceover guy for a number of years.
Who else thought of Linus when he says “all tech you tubers have smooth voices?”
The tech youtubers that are popular, most likely have a good voice.
Probably because you're more likely to get popular if you have a nice voice to listen to.
Starting your own channel was the best idea.
One of the few channels that I can say I have been here from the beginning.
Great video. keep up the good work.
Great colaboration guys, loved it and already waiting for the next one!!!
Thank you.
When my phone first got water damaged, I was not in a place that I could find rice. So I decided to play PUBG for as long as the battery lasted and supporting it with a power bank (it gets pretty hot when especially playing PUBG) after I tried to evapoate the water out of the phone (I took the back cover out to make it easier) and 3 days of rice did it. Worked flawlessly until my cousin accidentally dropped it off a cliff. I never found it anymore :(

That was a rollercoaster.
@@anirvana hmm yes

Rice doesn't help mate use silica gel and if there's leak in your phone after long time you will see damage not immediately because corosion needs time.
A video with Mr. Mobile AND Jerry Rig Everything?!
My body wasn't ready for this!
My Mate goes swimming every week and takes his phone every time. He owned Z5 Premium, he now has XZ2 and has never had an issue. Sony must have it nailed.I wouldn’t trust my iPhone X. Every time he puts his phone in the pool I get nervous and it’s not even my phone. Lol. It was only last week someone asked him if it’s water proof and he said it is, the boy said I don’t believe you so my mate ran it under the tap. He’s crazy! And that was a full year swimming with his phone.
I've been swimming and taking my iPhone 7 under water for a few months now... haven't had an issue yet.
Fleet Admiral Butter that’s an ip67 rating not ip68 though so likes it’s even less waterproof than those other ones lol

A very clear video about a topic that is typically made out to be muddy. Much appreciated.
This is the difference between useful and entertaining content. Most youtubers dont know the diff. Thumbs up bro!
Excellent video, it was fun to watch!
What year is it? A comment that is an actual comment about the video.
My Galaxy S7 Edge was the best water “proof” phone I had. I didn’t use a case and had it underwater frequently for a few months while road tripping and it took fantastic video and pictures under water. I miss it.
Still got mine and don't see any reason to upgrade right now. Its water proofing is better than my friend's iphone though.
I know! Also, its crazier when you think about the fact that they used to have some of the most conservative designs in the industry, remember the Galaxy S4?
ATW Tech - Alpha R2 stil, be careful of corrosion, though i admit the S7 still is really great!!!! 😍😍😍😍😉

Great collaboration video guys!
this is the first video I've seen explaining Ip ratings great job
Amazing explanation. I do IP ratings for work (my day job), and you have done an excellent job at explaining.
Quick question for you haha, what can I expect from my ipx5 speaker?
They didn't talk about IPX9. Do you about that? Does that even exist? It goes from 0 to 9 the water resistance, right?
@@LinuxIsNotAnOperatingSystem X9 doesn't exist as a standard. Stops at 8 for that particular battery of tests.
What about Nomu S10 pro? They claim is totally false, then?
@@LinuxIsNotAnOperatingSystem Oh dang, they added a new standard! It's high pressure high temp water spray. Still not the same as 68 (but I'd assume it's be 68/69?) - Still, 8-10 mPa of pressure is pretty serious pressure.
Got to love how it's obvious that you guys never met up to do this. Zach's microphone sound is rather distinct.
And yeah, my phone was sold as "Water proof" (The Moto G3) but after just a few short dunks to make some underwater video, the sd card reader started giving up the ghost.
Lenovo never got it fixed, they're honestly a horrible company. The store that sold it to me did a great job though.

Only Sony Xperia XZ2 is really water resistant meant it...
Amran Ibrahim Rashidi is that why sony phones are so heavy? I have an xz2 compact and even though I love it, i think it's too heavy for its size.

Amran Ibrahim Rashidi that's why Sony phones are great for long term usage and that's why I love Sony , they deliver what they say
Ultimate Gohan its a gorgeous device. Kinda thick, I think you already know that, but it means it's comfortable. The performance is top notch, the battery is ok (was expecting a bit more, but still getting 6 hours sot easily), the camera is very good except in low light (it's average there). I think overall is a very good device, and the phone to go for if you want good specs and not to carry a brick in your pocket. It's a lovely device, not to impress your friends, but very pleasing to use in a daily basis.
PS. The polycarbonate back is awesome. The best material ever, should be on every device.

My s8 plus died in pool before because I was thinking it was waterproof.😒 turns out, phones are WATER RESISTANT.
Smh
Used my s8 several times in pool and everything works just fine. Also sometimes I clean it with tap water
One of you are lying
@@noTH9IK Cleaning it with water is ok because it's still not under water and you are just washing the front screen so there will be no water pressure. Also my s8 was working fine after I used it under the pool. It died when I was drying it and I was trying to push the waters out by tapping it. I tried everything to fix it when it died, like I tried rice and blow drier. But it was DIED. So I got the money back from Samsung and now I have s10 plus. Never gonna try to do that with this phone under pool again 😂.

I just had my phone fall out of my pocket and into the toilet, and the back was shattered open and it destroyed the phone.(galaxy note 9) that I got just ONE year ago.
having your expensive phone fall into the toilet is one thing, but having it fall into the toilet, shattering the back, and having the phone water damaged is just horrible. i always take my phone out and place it on the counter near the toilet before going by it to avoid this.

Way to go Michael. We need more!
But is there any smartphone that can be actually used with no worries in water? Galaxy S8 Active?
CAT S60
Luc David nope, even that is not totally waterproofed, it's just an improved version of an ip68 rating, not really waterproof
CAT phones or Sonim phones.
Rida Kesserwan I know but 5 meters resistance ought to be better than 1 meter, no ?
Any smartphone can be used under water... from inside a submarine that is. Apart from that, tough luck. 😅

Geric John Olivar but CAT isn't the kind of device u wud go for as a daily driver
vs k Nahh it’s not waterproof
Geric John Olivar Unfortunately, CAT ain't speaking in my country. 😂
Isnt there a case that makes the phone water proof?
Not they will protect against water but an like a ip resistance the water could leak in with pressure.
I guess it's false marketing then. Since they keep advertising it will make a phone waterproof.
*Researcher Researching Research* It's hard to make a device waterproof I suppose. I don't mind my device "just" being water resistant, but then it should be marketed as such instead of beings shown like it can survive continuous dunks of water without a hitch
I think you're probably referring to LifeProof cases. While they're excellent cases (they better be for how much they cost), they're still going to have their limitations. I'm not sure what they tend to be rated at, but regardless, once you reach a certain depth, the water pressure is still going to compromise the case's integrity.
But it is at least one more layer of protection.
Great video and it was wonderful to view both JRE & Mr. Mobile collaborating together about the effects of salt water on cell phones... Could you do another one of these videos with the Apple Watch 5 against the water durability of the Samsung Active 2...?
