1:15 It's the second law of gravity: the bearing always drops to the ground when it has the maximum amont of grease on it to pick up the maximum amount of dirt from the shop floor.
Hey Bro, Im a 58 yr old retired biker ready to purchase my 1st peddler sence 1972. (becides the bmx bikes I build by kids in the 80s) After a lifetime of broken bones and a couple knee replacements from cars running me down, the Doc says I gotta get exercize someways. The Beast was my first choise so after checking ytube its going to be a cool one. Thanks for the tips man his video was way valuable to me.
Yeah bro I got a 83 now I've had many from the days when mongoose made good bikes now I feel like lmao did U see how dry the bearings looked mass produced pieces of shit now back in the day hand built by people who could ride built to last forever I should know and I see on CZcams others feel the same bout vintage mongoose bikes lol just look at this piece of shit bike id rip doz stickers off just for that reason cause I own a real one lol
My first bike was a 1984 Mongoose Californian. A few years later I had a FS-1, loved that bike. Like y'all said, it was a great brand and one to have back in the day.
I just got a red Beast. I like how different the looks for only $200. I already ordered a seat, BMX handle bars, RASTA color grips and under seat bag. i will probably paint the chein guard. I am old and don't have any kids at home any more. Great Video Joe!!! Thanks for putting it up. Maybe i will go withthe 22 tooth sproket.
That's awesome. The first thing I thought of when I considered buy this bike is whether or not the decals could come off easily. I wanted to strip it down. Thanks for the demo!
I decided to buy the this morning, for 216.00 spent Iits worth it and fun to ride around the hood. It's nothing but a street cruiser not a performance bike, but very comfortable and solid. I rode it out Walmart and no intension of bringing it back! If you're looking for your first Fatbike this is it!
One of the first things you do when you buy a Mongoose bike is to realize that people know it's a Mongoose, and removing stickers and labels doesn't make it into a Schwinn. The mods are fine, but dude... Mongoose has a proud history. There's no reason to relabel the bike as its competition.
just ordered one. your video is pretty helpful being besides bikes I rode and tinkered with as a kid, I haven't messed with one since. look forward to this one.
One of the many benefits of bikes is that they are pretty simple to work on. Especially those with single speed and coaster brakes. If you poke around my CZcams channel or locojoe.com you'll see I eventually sold this bike and upgraded to the Dolomite which I eventually sold as well. I kinda miss the Beast. I definately got more than my moneys worth for the time I had it. Thanks for watching. Enjoy the bike!
Please don't take offense to my comment, it's just meant to be more of a tease than anything, lol. It's sometimes hard to get that to come through in written posts. You did succeed in making a good video, showing buyers what to expect when buying the Beast. Good job on the video, and no worries!
i just ordered mine i should have it in 7-10 days , i also have a 60cc engine kit coming. I own a bike shop so it shouldnt be that big of a project but i should have it just in time for snow and ccomuting a 4 mile round trip to the shop all winter.!!!! I CANT WAIT!!!!!!!
Easy to assemble. If I recall you just have to put on the front wheel, pedals and stem/handlebars. Adjustable wrench and allen wrench probably all you need. Just to be safe I tore mine down to regrease everything prior to assembling. IMHO this bike comes with too high of a gear to ride off the pavement though. I changed out my rear sprocket to a bigger one (make pedaling easier) so I could ride it off road.
I don't know his exact reason for removing the stickers, but I know why I have in the past. Mongoose ARE great bikes, and quality ones are BIG money. Big box store ones though, not so much. So when you've had one stolen from you because the thief thought they were taking a more expensive ride it only ends up hurting your wallet, and in my case, broke my kids heart! But why replace with other branding, you got me. I left no branding and engraved ID info into frame on the replacement bike. Also wish I had thought to up-size rear sprocket...duh! That was smart.
There was a couple reasons I removed the decals. I explain if you'd like to read through the comments. Or you can watch this video czcams.com/video/DFkCqkUcZh8/video.html It's all in fun. I don't take anything too serious and ride several big box store bikes all customized though. Good point about misleading a thief to think it's a more valuable bike than it is. Thanks for watching.
+LocoJoe Thanks Joe. I did find that video after posting my comment, especially enjoyed the end, lol. My comment was more directed to haters and those who could not seem to see any possible logic in why one would do such a thing. Good job... got yer back friend!
Also, adding the other brands decals is silly... Mongoose is a fine brand (sure I'm a fan, not totally unbiased, lol). Ride what you buy, and be proud of the fact THAT YOU'RE RIDING!
Depending on the intended use, I think cheap bikes are ok if the cost is also cheap. This one satisfied my curiosity of riding on fat tires and entertained me for a while at a 9comparatively) cheap price. I wouldn't recommended someone buy their main bike from Walmart. Support your local bike shop when possible.
Just checked them out at Walmart, it's an awesome deal for your first fatty! The wheels alone are worth that and you can modify to your taste. Great deal for sure for a cruiser!
I'd take them off aswell that no fukn mongoose that company puts its stickers on bikes that are build cheap and look like shit dam dry bearings hahaha wtf happened to mongoose heavy wheels was a thing they did for strength landing high speed jumps but that fukn bike is a hi joke
I had one on hand that fit. I don't recall where I even got it. I don't know what to tell you specifically to look for but I think all the newer coaster brake sprockets are universal. Maybe go back to your bike shop and explain.
The first thing I do when I buy a Mongoose Bicycle is Ride it, because I never buy anything that I don't like. I like the name of the Bicycle, I like that little, round, silver Mongoose on the front of the Bicycle, no way would I take it off. We do what makes us happy, I suppose. For what I paid for Bicycles in the Past, I feel good about this Bicycle, people thats on a Trek or even a Cannodale are caught looking at my Bicycle from Walmart, yea, thats right, as it is, no modifications. This is a Cool Bicycle. It boils down to what you like. Yes, I had to make some adjustments to the Disc Breaks, but it didn't take long, not a problem. Hey Guys, enjoy life.
I'm sure you'll like it. I more than got my moneys worth out of mine while I had it. I moved up to the Dolomite but kind of miss the simplicity of the Beast.
The fatter tires I suppose enable you to ride over more variety of terrain. This particular bike with no gears and a coaster brake I believe is mostly a novelty. The high end fatbikes i.e. Surly Pugsly I think were initially made with snow and sand in mind.
If you check out the video "Mongoose Beast on the Air Capital Memorial Singletrack"you'll see it was replaced . And the whole bike has been repainted since that video. Thanks.
I see a guy riding what I assume is a stock (18t) Beast around here and he's always standing on the pedals to get it to go. I believe all the newer rear sprockets are universal so whatever you find should work. You may have to add to the length of the chain if you go to a bigger (=easier pedaling) rear sprocket. The front chainring I left stock.
All of the changes as of now.. the frame and fork have it's painted twice, the rims painted black, replaced the saddle with a brooks, replaced the 18t rear sprocket with a 22t and removed the chainguard. If you poke around our website at locojoe . com you'll find more recent pictures of it. Thanks for the comment.
I got an e-mail that you posted another comment/question but can't find it here. Anyway not sure what you meant by "specs". I replaced the 18t rear sprocket with a 22t to allow me to do a little off roading and hill climbing. A 22t might be to easy pedaling if you are just planning on riding flat paved paths. A 20t might be better for that.
Everyone us saying about the weight etc , are you forgetting what we rode in the 80's as kids ? Raleigh grifter etc . Killer heavy bike . Did we moan ? No because we were having fun doing jumps an stuff . Without computers or phones . And it was great .
Maybe it could idk. Is it a wide enough hub? People are adapting this bike in varying ways with internal and external gearing, disc and cantilever brakes. Sun makes a fatbike with a Shimano 2 speed kickback.
Seeing this reminds me of when we were kids we would cut the forks off Schwinn's and use then to extend the forks on the bikes we were riding to make them chopper style.
No you're not missing anything. I just happen to have a Schwinn decal (and others). The bike has been painted twice since this video and now has no decals.
Um..... That sir is not a Schwinn Bicycle, or a Tornado Bicycle, but I can see it being a Freak Bicycle lol. The wheels I made. They are eccentric. Offset hub. They are on the "bronco bike" which is a modified old Schwinn Stingray. If you look through my channel you'll find video of it. Or search our website for "bronco".
i have the Mongoose 'Brutus' version of this bike (black with yellow rims) i purchased at Kmart for $200. Heavy bike but fun to ride and a big attention getter.
Nice. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. I thought it would be cool to repaint a Brutus John Deere green like I have done with another bike of mine... locojoe.com/bike/170
Quick question, since you installed the 22 tooth cog on the back right away, did you use a different chain that what came with the bike? Or add any links? Or will the same chain work? Thanks.
I dont even peel off stickers and badges , just gorilla tape it for protection and resale stock value :) Whats that green bike with the circus clown rims hanging in the back? 2.24
I have other "beast" videos on my channel. One is riding it at the local MTB park. I was surprised how well we did. I'm not really a MTBer any more. I doubt it would hold up long though consistently riding that type of terrain. Thanks for the comment.
Wish you hadnt removed the decals... Dont hide what the bike is! Or, replace the cheap stock decals with higher quality Mongoose decals (I keep numerous colors/sizes for my builds, made of much better vinyl). Ride and be proud of your bike, even if its a $200 fatbike!
Love the information about grease in the bearings. I read a bunch of posts below and did not see where you got the 20 tooth rear sprocket. Did you notice a difference?
I believe I had the sprocket on hand but had probably gotten it at my local bike shop. Yes it did make a little difference but later I changed it out again to a 22 tooth. This made it a lot easier on trails and hills. Too easy for riding flat pavement though.
Now I'm all about pimping walmart bikes (Built up a GMC Denali w/ full Campy Veloce and a Mongoose Deception 29er with full XT), but a Homegrown sticker on the head tube is just a sin. I like what you do though, keep it up!
I purchased the bike online through Walmart. The rims are 26x4 inch. They are sold at choppersus . com but 2 of those rims cost the same as what I paid for the whole bike.
First... Thank you for this video. I plan to purchase one. If you could... please share specifically where the 22 sprocket came from. I'm planning to do exactly what you did with the rear sprocket. Thanks. Marc
I have a green Beast but the pedal arms are bent and one of the pedals is shattered on one side (I have anger issues...) but it's a fairly easy fix. My friend's getting the Dolomite though, I'm so jelly. :c
Did you have to add any links to the chain for the 22T-Sprocket to work ? If so, how many links does the stock chain have and how many links did you have to add ?? Just got my Beast today and ordered a 22T Cog for it, was wondering if there would anything else needed... Thanks, Joe
Customize! I knew I would be eventually painting the bike. It's been painted twice since this video. Please check out all my other Mongoose Beast videos.
Few observations, Why can't a shimano Alfine not be connected to this? Why no disc brakes either? Few brakes and an 8 speed internal hub and this would make a great urban explorer and freestyle bike despite the wait.
If you changed out the sprocket on the pedal for a larger one, would it go faster through the sand? What about breaks? is the bike harder to stop with the larger wheels?
With the stock sprocket I think it would be really difficult to go through sand at all (I'm talking soft sand). The larger rear sprocket makes it easier pedaling and better in sand. It has a coaster brake so it's not as other types. Works fine for just cruising around though.
I saw one of these for the first time at Walmart today... with tires that fat, I would think the multiple-speed gearing would be necessary... I am looking to see if anyone has fitted an engine to one of these... would have to go behind the seat, I think.
It really depends on what you use it for. Once I changed the gearing on mine it worked pretty well for cruising and some trails. I've since sold it and bought the 7 speed Dolomite but I generally just stay in one gear on it. It's pretty flat where I live though. I'm sure I've seen or heard talk of someone motorizing one but I can't recall where.

Agreed. Flew thru the air on a hunk of iron and rubber.
I was thinking of replacing the rear cog with a free wheel and using rear hand brake.

just before you said "dont tell me that's not happened to you "
.. i said to myself "that's me "
I haven't weighed it. Maybe if you look it up at Walmart.com it might give the weight or shipping weight.
Thanks, Joe
Well I didn't really set out to do a review.
Maybe you can glean more info from the rest of my Beast videos
I like the look without the stickers. Also the bike got repainted later.
Why do you take the logos and stickers off? Is that to lessen the likelihood of the bike getting stolen?
I like the look without the stickers.
Also the bike has since been re-painted a different color..
Customize! I knew I would be eventually painting the bike. It's been painted twice since this video. Please check out all my other Mongoose Beast videos.
Hey Joe, What Berring grease are you using?
I heard that you can use a hairdryer to melt the glue. Is that what you did?
Works fine for just cruising around though.
that looks really fun to ride
Does anyone know where to buy some good fenders or mud flaps for it? Does Mongoose make them?
To roll over stuff easier. Supposed to work well in snow and sand.
and if i want to put a gear for the rear wheel i can or not ... and do the bike done well on the sand ... because im from ..dubai..??
I saw one of these for the first time at Walmart today... with tires that fat, I would think the multiple-speed gearing would be necessary... I am looking to see if anyone has fitted an engine to one of these... would have to go behind the seat, I think.
It really depends on what you use it for. Once I changed the gearing on mine it worked pretty well for cruising and some trails. I've since sold it and bought the 7 speed Dolomite but I generally just stay in one gear on it. It's pretty flat where I live though. I'm sure I've seen or heard talk of someone motorizing one but I can't recall where.
If my old tired eyes are seeing it right it's 28mm and 13.5" end to end. It's the old style seat post not a micro-adjust or whatever.
I had already removed it before I decided to film. Didn't come off quite as easy as it looked.
