The Yama-Ichi War was a feud mainly fought in the south-central Japanese region of Kansai, between the Yamaguchi-gumi and the Ichiwa-kai gangster syndicates in the 1980s.
Though its roots were in 1984, when the yakuza parent gang of the Yamaguchi-gumi was sectioned into two factions, the feud was at its most violent between January 1985 and February 1986.

The situation is very different. The central government in Japan has far more power than any central or south american government. Also, the military is far more loyal. If the violence would've spiraled out of control, the government would've declared martial law and have the military shoot Yakuza on sight. Or basically every Japanese person with Tatoos. And the Japanese people woould've been okay with that. Doing something that is a threat to the state in Japan would be completely suicidal, even for tha Yakuza.

Sort of. The Tojo Clan are based on the Sumiyoshi-kai. The Omi Alliance were based on the Yamaguchi Him. While they are sort of based on true events I wouldn't say it was a one to one correlation. But since they did say something about a Yakuza 0 Part 2. They could do this and they have the best character for it. Masaru Watase. Since he is the Omi's equivalent of Kitty.

"You have provoked a Gang War!"
This is like kindergarten level compared to mafia wars in Sicily, those had the same total numbers of casualties but in just one week
That’s the Sicilians for you. Say what you will about them, but very few cultures have stronger familial ties and a communal identity than those you’d find in Sicily way back when, which makes sense considering that Sicilian history is basically them being invaded over and over and over again. Phoenician and Carthaginian, Greek, Roman, Vandal and Ostrogoth, Byzantine Greek, Aghlabid, Kalbid, Norman, Aragonese, Spanish and so on. All had one thing in common, they tortured and oppressed the native Sicilians. Is it any wonder, with so many cruel and corrupt governments controlling them, that the Mafia sprung up to act as a secondary government of their own that still persists to this day.
Revenge was a family obligation, so their vendettas could persist for centuries, perpetuating the cycle of vengeance. What’s even more astounding is just how many of these mafiosi were strongly religious. Devout Catholics, they wouldn’t even take the name of the lord in vain but in the hot blood of vendetta, they’d shotgun the pope himself for breaking Omertà.
You could also compare the American Mafia, who were just a bunch of cowboys.
The most famous mob war is probably the Prohibition-era Chicago Gang War that spanned from 1920 to 1931 and only killed 500 to 1300 people in total, but was fought with far more brutality and sadism than World War I (for starters, a gangster was thrown out of car while burning alive onto a busy public street in 1928). Also, the war wasn't just for the control of all illegal booze, the gangsters were fighting each other for control of the whole city, as the mayor at the time, Big Bill Thompson, was nothing more than a corrupt, insane puppet for Al Capone to control.
Great video
