The Yakuza are members of a Japanese crime syndicate that were founded back in the 17th Century, during the mid-Edo period.
They very much see themselves as a Ninkyo Dantai, a ‘Chivalrous Organization’, that prides itself on tradition, family and maintaining a strict code of conduct.

I'm Japanese and I want you to note:
The term "YAKUZA" is very humiliating to those people. They never use that word to refer to themselves. They prefer to call themselves "GOKUDO".
I'll remember that. You know... just in case.
What does Gokudo mean, by the way?
Yeah what does it mean?
Good question. Let me try to explain.
1. DO means way of something like judo, kendo, bushido, etc.
2. GOKU means extreme or ultimate, so literally GOKUDO is way of extreme, or way of ultimate. Make sense, I hope? Anyway its a word to express their pride being outlaw.
3. Usage is a bit different from other -DO terms, like practice kendo or exercise, judo. GOKUDO refers to certain type or grope of people, used like We are GOKUDO, he is a GOKUDO, or I'm a wife of GOKUDO.
Hope it helps.

Trivia:
The children's show "Bob the Builder" had to be revised in Japan. In the UK and US versions, Bob had 4 fingers. In Japan, the humans were made to have 5 fingers instead of 4, as a man having 4 fingers indicates their membership with the Yakuza. It's part of Japanese culture and society at the time.
Bob had a hardcore youth he isnt proud of.
Wowww????
So Bob is a sacred retired yakuza
What about the Simpsons?
Bob was once a feared Yakuza Lieutenant, but he made a mistake and retired, becoming a builder rather than cutting his pinky finger.

You failed to mention that the Yakuza played a huge role in maintaining social stability during the post-WWII period when the feudal government was rendered useless, and the nation's pride and masculinity destroyed by the nuclear bombs. People looked to these "criminals" to settle neighbourly disputes and maintain basic security.
So they become cops

A well-meaning doc but a few big inaccuracies here: Quite a few Yakuza members are ethnic Korean, but ethnic Koreans are NOT Burakumin. Ethnic Koreans (Zainichi) along with Burakumin, both form a major chunk or the Yakuza ranks, but they are different from each other. Burakumin are a severely socially discriminated ethnic group that traces their ancestries to medieval peasants who had undesirable jobs that were considered unclean, like butchers or undertakers.
Modern Yakuza also don't trace their lineage to the medieval-era peddlers and gambling establishments. Those were simply their 200 year-old counterparts. Modern Yakuza all trace their beginnings to war-torn Japan of the late 1940's, where poverty was rampant and there was an economic vacuum that placed the Yakuza in power.
Modern Yakuza might be the second generation of Yakuza. First was result of Meiji-restauration which broke down old social order and left many samurai penniless so they became criminals.
@@firecattle With that classification line between second and third generation is quite blurry while first and second have much clearer separation. If I remember correctly yakuza got their name from gambling term similar to "seven high" and former samurai were hired by gambling groups as enforcers and thus formed first generation. Quite interesting anomaly in organized crime.

When I was a teacher's aide a few years back, in a classroom of Japanese exchange students age 19-20, I had this one kid who was for sure Yakuza.
He had spiked, bleached hair, and I always saw him outside our classroom smoking. He had no friends. He would always wear long sleeves, and when his collar slipped I saw that he had a full body suit of tattoos. Finally, when I asked him what he wanted to do as a career, all he would say was "I will work for my father's business".

When I lived in Kobe a few years ago, there was a civil war over some secession crisis or whatever in the Yamaguchi-gumi that made it all over the news. Apparently this led to the group splitting in two, but I don't know if they made up. My friend lived near a particularly nice neighborhood that she suspected had a lot of Yakuza residences and during this time, there was a drive-by on one of those residences. No, there weren't mass shootouts in the streets between rival factions. They were pretty discreet about it all.
Interesting fact. The Yakuza made the news one year for holding a Halloween event for where kids can go trick-or-treating at their HQ. They've been doing it for over a decade.

4:27 Before mentioning the point, I have to say that the word _buraku_ is used to refer to the discriminated areas in Western Japan, especially in Kansai region, although it originally means “hamlet” or “village” and still has such general meaning around Japan, especially eastern Japan. People from those specific areas has been called _burakumin_ to discriminate against by others. I came from Tohoku region and still live in eastern Japan, so I’ve not ever had experience to feel the sensitive quality of the word _buraku_ in the actual usage.
It is hard to say that _burakumin_ has “ethnic Korean backgrounds”. Their origin is controversial and there is not any widely or publicly accepted evidence to support that statement. It is not said that Koreans or other ethnic groups came to Japan in the medieval or early modern periods and was discriminated as outcasts, ancestors of _burakumin_ in the late modern period. The most important thing is that they don’t claim ethnicity of Koreans or any other ethnic difference from other Japanese in the first place.
In addition, Koreans who has come to Japan in the late modern period are called _Zainichi Koreans_ (Koreans in Japan), not _burakumin_ . It is true that there were some Korean yakuzas, but that is the same thing that some people of the ethnic majority of Japanese become yakuzas.
Also, I doubt if it is “often” that yakuzas were descended from _burakumin_ , although they could have had natural reasons to become yakuzas meeting discrimination like rejection of employment or marriage because of what they are. However, other people should also have had their reasons to do so. Harukichi Yamaguchi and members of the Yamaguchi Gumi in its origin were dockers at the port of Kobe.
Yeap. I thought of pointing this out but just in case someone might already commented on this, it just scroll down the comment section to look for it. Great explanation.
