My father was leading the group of Rangers attempting to rescue him. Unfortunately, they could not get to him before the enemy. His death will not be disgraced though, thank you for recognizing his bravery.

There is no question the Naval Special Forces (SEAL) commanders were riven with confusion, made extremely poor tactical decisions and subsequently tried to block S/Sgt Chapman’s MOH. While his was in the very finest traditions of service their own conduct was shabby and inglorious.
Yeah we aren’t getting the full story here. He was literally left behind to die alone.

I have read about him and his actions in Afghanistan. Very interesting and heroic story. So far he is the latest recipient of the U.S Air Force Medal of Honor which was given to his family posthumously by President Trump in 2018. Much respect to John A. Chapman. May he rest in peace.

What a God damn hero. He knew he was dying and still he fought to protect his men and his family back home.
In the process of joining Air Force Special Warfare, a couple months ago we had a memorial workout for Chapman. After hearing the story, I can confirm that it was the most heart crushing workout I've ever taken part in.

I was about to say... it is simply outrageous that he received anything less than the Medal of Honor. I will say this... I served in the military along side many of the special operations units, and the Air Force Air Traffic Controllers are always the least talked about, least recognized, most underrated special unit in our military. I was so impressed with the special units from the Air Force... the level of respect that have for these guys is tremendous. For example, during Operation Irene, in Mogadishu... the event upon which the movie Blackhawk Down is based, the movie mentions and recognizes the sacrifices and heroic actions of both the 175th Rangers and SFOD-D, but no one even mentions the fact that Air Force Air Traffic Controllers were extremely heroic during that battle and that they, especially one of them in particular, was almost solely responsible for the survival of the Ranger land convoy. That guy should also have gotten the Medal of Honor, like the two fallen Delta guys.
I wonder if Chapman was thinking about his wife and daughters during the heat of battle. What’s sad is that he probably knew he was already dead from the start.

He knew he was going to die there and fought for over an hour killing every insurgent he could. Once his team pulled out he literately knew he was going to die there, so he had nothing else to lose and fought like a banshee!

A tier 1 special missions unit.
Which is the equivalent of the Navy’s Devgru and Army’s Delta Force.

Without regard for his own safety, Sergeant Chapman immediately engaged, moving in the direction of the closest enemy position despite coming under heavy fire from multiple directions. He fearlessly charged an enemy bunker, up a steep incline in thigh-deep snow and into hostile fire, directly engaging the enemy. Upon reaching the bunker, Sergeant Chapman assaulted and cleared the position, killing all enemy occupants. With complete disregard for his own life, Sergeant Chapman deliberately moved from cover only 12 meters from the enemy and exposed himself once again to attack a second bunker, from which an emplaced machine gun was firing on his team. During this assault from an exposed position directly in the line of intense fire, Sergeant Chapman was struck and injured by enemy fire. Despite severe, mortal wounds, he continued to fight relentlessly, sustaining a violent engagement with multiple enemy personnel before making the ultimate sacrifice. By his heroic actions and extraordinary valor, sacrificing his life for the lives of his teammates, Technical Sergeant Chapman upheld the highest traditions of military service and reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force."

I saw the footage. He didn't give up at all. Fought all the way till the end. God I love our veterans and the sacrifices they make day in day out. Respect and condolences to those affected by wars of our fathers.
There is a barracks named after him for basic training, wasn't in that, and he is an example of those who are an AIR FORCE HERO in a book there, rest in peace brother from a man who also served as well.

This battle inspired the last act of the 2010 Medal of Honor game. Actually a pretty enjoyable game, imo.
I loved that game, probably played through a hundred times. I also liked Warfighter (the sequel to 2010, if you didn't know) but that's a more uncommon opinion.

Highly recommend the book 'Alone at Dawn', which covers the life of John Chapman, Operation Anaconda and the history of CCT (Combat Control Team), who are the Tier One SF for the Air Force. Chapman didn't even take his body armour onto the mountain. Truly a terrible set of circumstances that led to his death, largely due to command incompetence by the SEAL's.

It's a crime that he was awarded the MOH 16 years after his actions.

@Somarik Green The drone video is on YT by a channel promoting the real story, book and "prolonged" campaign for him to get the CMOH. The only reason for the huge prolonged time are the SEALS. proving that in every group of people there are ASSHOLES. these guys did everything to hide the fact they wussed out when another soldier non SEAL was tougher and acted where they failed. this includes every doc movie you will watch on OP anaconda/ battle of Roberts ridge/ the campaign of MEDAL OF HONOR 2010 game (SEALs advised), in which the narrative is always how brave were the SEALS going back for one of their own. making their part bigger, and not even speaking about Chapman's part in the scale they should. I was mad this video didn't mention it. they denied him the medal only because of what it would say about them.

It takes a while.
The MOH doesn't just happen. It is a very prestigious award and it not taken lightly. The investigations and witness statements need to be collected and they need to recount what happened and what they saw. This process is also made much longer when the person is dead, as the primary source is dead. Yes, the navy did try to pretend this didn't happen for a couple years but it became public knowledge very quickly. In the end, he got the well deserved award, even though I would wager that the last thing on his mind that day was the MOH.

Hero's still exist, you can easily find many of these amazing men, and even women in all branches of the American military. They never hesitate, even knowing they will make the Ultimate Sacrifice, never to see their loved ones again in this life. We are so blessed! These are Real Americans!
One of my close friends was pals with Chapman. Tears him up every time he’s reminded of how this went down.

@@therealboomhauer69 In a nutshell, the Navy tried to deny and stop him from being awarded a medal of honor cuz they were afraid the SEALs are gonna get the title of "SoF who left a man behind", even though it's "kinda ok" since they thought he was dead for a good reason. So they put their SEAL on the medal of the honor board, who is Master Chief Slabinski, who deserves it, but shows how the navy tried to stop Chapman from being awarded the MoH

I remember seeing the arial footage with pauses at each significant moment, and it’s so much more terrifying that even this video tells. Seeing the grenades, RPG’s and ridiculous quantity of rounds pouring over Chapman is incredible.

It's wild to think that his two daughters, who are grown up now, can look up their father and find a video like this. They might have grown up without him, but his legacy is far stretching and easily found and documented like this. I wonder how it must feel for them.

Chapman needs a song from Sabaton made in his honor, he is legend that would be welcomed in the Halls of Valhalla and amongst the greatest people who fought until their last dying breath.

@@aurora8385 No there are several places in Norse mythology where people go after they die. Warriors go to Valhalla but I have read somewhere only the top nine from any battle get that, the farmers, fishers and anyone not raiding and pillaging on a daily basis go Folkvangr, and farm all day. The rest go to Hel or are stuck in the mortal realm as a ghost. There's also apparently another place for drowned sailors but that's seems more like a spiritual hostage situation.

Neil Roberts (the guy who fell) actually also had his own last stand. There’s a book by Robert O’Neil (guy who killed Bin Laden) that relays the story and it’s equally badass and I highly recommend researching it.

@@17MrLeon he qualified for two: charging the bunker and then fighting to save the last helicopter. But because the people investigating it wanted to make absolutely sure he was given his due, they rolled both qualifications into one for an airtight case. Source: Alone at Dawn by Dan Schilling.
