    A young Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) travels to the Far East, where he's trained in the martial arts by Henri Ducard (Liam Neeson), a member of the mysterious League of Shadows. When Ducard reveals the League's true purpose -- the complete destruction of Gotham City -- Wayne returns to Gotham intent on cleaning up the city without resorting to murder. With the help of Alfred (Michael Caine), his loyal butler, and Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman), a tech expert at Wayne Enterprises, Batman is born.

    The thing I love about this movie is how well Gary Oldman "plays down" to the role. He's the best Commissioner Gordon I've ever seen and the truest to the comic book. Almost all the roles he's known for are dialled up to 11 and completely unstable (The Professional, Immortal Beloved, Sid & Nancy, Fifth Element). You're exactly right, everybody in this movie is so "theatrical," and his performance is so muted and gentle in contrast to the costumed melodrama happening around him. It's a really good performance BECAUSE he doesn't stand out.

    Ras Al Ghul in the comics and cartoon is actually hundreds if not thousands of years old. He uses this pool of liquid called the Lazarus Pit which is a supernatural pond that can heal wounds, resurrect the dead, or essentially immortality. The main downside is that it typically makes the person temporarily insane.
    He once used it to bring back to life the second Robin named (Jason Todd). Jason Todd was beaten to near death by the Joker, and then the Joker blew up the building he was tied up in killing him. Ras dug him up and brought him back to life, but Jason no longer believed in Batman’s ideals and felt his methods didn’t work. So Jason put on a red helmet and named himself the Red Hood. As Red Hood instead of beating criminals up and sending them to jail, he instead goes for a more permanent solution and kills them.

    In the comics Ras Alghoul is actually immortal he baths in a mystical pitt known as the Lazarus Pitt. The Lazarus Pitt not only grants immortality but can even bring back the dead. And another comic book fact Batman was largely inspired by Zorro and there are many references to zorro in Batman media especially in some other movies.

      I like how the pit prison in The Dark Knight Rises was metaphorically this series' Lazarus Pit. Bruce went into it broken but came out healed. Bane came out of it insane. I like twising things like that into a more realistic (compared to the comics) narrative..

    By far the best film in the Nolan trilogy from it's depiction of Gotham to it's tone and really solid art direction it's my personal favourite out of the three films. Dark Knight dropped the ball when it came to it's depiction of Gotham and overall tone compared to Begins while Bales Batman was a little too much in the later films and I just never liked him as Batman, Loved him as Bruce Wayne. The Dark Knight Rises suffers from this as well but I still enjoy all three just prefer Batman Begins.
    I feel like the Nolan films both brought Batman back into the mainstream while also warping the imagine of Batman's and his mythos. Alot of people only know Batman to be this very "grounded" as they say mythos as they were introduced to him with these films but in reality it's far from being "grounded". So alot of people go into other Batman media like the comics, video games, cartoons, and other films a little confused and freaked out with how different they are from featuring more Supernatural aspects to having a very depiction of Gotham and the big one featuring Meta Humans. Also gave way to more "grounded" takes on Superhero's that ended up being dull and boring so it's very interesting to see people's reaction to Gotham of the comics in comparison to the Nolan movies.
    Gotham City is not meant to be a generic American City but it's own city with it's own very fantastical, supernatural history and amazing Gothic meets Art Deco architecture. The films, more so the later ones tried a little too much to be grounded to the point where they striped away alot of the personality of the comics from the city of Gotham to some of it's villains. But I still love these films it's just like I said it's funny seeing people who were introduced Batman with this trilogy read the comics and meet characters like Clayface or see how Gotham is depicted in the comics with Blimps and a timeless hybrid of the 1930s meets modern day, old meets new look. Often leads to "This is nothing like the movies" and it's a shame as I would love to see this aspect of Batman explored for once.

    • @vengeance1939
      @vengeance1939 Před rokem +10

      Yeah the Narrows and the Wayne Train System really makes Gotham in this film, along with the overall orange tint to the film. Nolan wanted Gotham to always look like it could be any city, idea that this could be happening in you're own city making Batman feel more personal and grounded in reality. But to me it has the opposite effect as we're seeing a city that's basically Chicago a city that already exists in the DC universe and there's very little change to make Gotham stand out as it's own city. No cool Gotham landmarks to make the city stand out and we don't see the Cities past history like we do in the other films. The Batman (2022) does a better job at showcasing Gotham City in a movie that's still grounded. I think overtime we'll be introduced to more Meta Human characters so going from Batman Year One to Long Halloween.

      @CaptainAmercia Před rokem +6

      @@Viceman109 Going to be honest I never cared for him as Batman but Batman Begins for me is the only time I enjoy him as Batman. Can't stand his voice in the later two films and I never cared for him in the Batsuit instead my favourite scenes was when he was Bruce Wayne which over the course of the films gets less and less. There's a reason his Batman became a massive meme online. I would actually take Val Kilmer from Batman Forever over Bale as to me Kilmer's Batman/Bruce was pretty equal overall in terms of quality. While Bale for me was lacking alot in his Batman but I loved his Bruce Wayne.

    geez every time I see this movie, or even see CLIPS from it, I'm mind blown by what Nolan did. Obviously it was an incredible effort by the cast and crew, but ppl forget that in the early 2000s, WB was trying to get a number of new Batman franchises off the ground, and it was Nolan's vision that rose above all to fruition. There have been many great Batman movies, but I think this is the definitive one.
    10:08 this scene between Falcone and Bruce is TERRIFYING because of how real it is. F*** people like Falcone
    12:30 and this exchange between R'as and Bruce, "This man should be tried." "By who? Corrupt Bureaucrats?" Indeed he has a point.. it hurts to think how much of a point this is still today.
    On a lighter note 15:49 I love this moment because it shows the incredible ruse that Bruce begins to play on Gotham, nobody would suspect this sleazy playboy is Batman. I'm only halfway thru the reaction so I'm gonna end here by timestamping one more amazing scene from the middle of the movie 18:04 this scene really speaks for itself. Thx Tim & Malbread again for another banger!

    Fun fact Batman was never trained by the League of Assassins in the comics he traveled all over the world and had many mentors Ra's al Ghul was not one of them. He also mastered every form of martial arts and studied criminology during his time away from Gotham as well as trained his body to mental and physical perfection I wish the films showed that because it's very interesting that's why Batman is my favorite superhero he doesn't need super powers to be badass he's badass as both Batman and Bruce Wayne I hope you guys watch Batman: The Animated Series in the future in my opinion it's the definitive adaptation of Batman

    21:23 I’m Batman. 34:45 that’s the real Ra’s al Ghul, not the red 👘 who is a decoy. 38:03 😂 38:55 nice landing 40:46-40:53 hasta la vista, Ra’s al Ghul! 42:58 I remember the time when I was in the theaters, everybody is cheering for the 🃏 in the next movie. Anyway, you’re going to enjoy the dark knight next.

    This movie isn’t really one of the best Batman movies like Batman (1989) or The Dark Knight, but it’s still a pretty great Batman movie. This was a good portrayal of the Batman origin, and Christopher Nolan knew how to do it in a gritty way.

    9/10
    Batman Begins Again - This Time With a Vengeance
    Anything I say about this film will sell it short. I was originally skeptical when I saw the Urban Assault Vehicle in the trailer, but my fears were calmed when I saw it in context. Everything about this film is perfect - the acting, the directing, the mood, the plot, and all else. It is rare to see such intricate storytelling mixed with bone-shattering intensity in the action department. And fans of the comic will not be disappointed with this apt translation.
    I hope Chris Nolan directs all future Bat-movies, because his lighting and architectural canvasing was so perfect, it outdid Tim Burton's interpretation (which I previously thought impossible). As of this review, IMDb has rated the movie #117 of all time, and I agree completely. This film has universal appeal. Christian Bale is perfect as Bruce Wayne, Katie Holmes actually acts for once in her career, Liam Neeson is the quintessential villain. Other stars shine brightly. I can only hope that Crispin Glover becomes the Joker in the sequel. Highest possible recommendation...

    I still don't understand what anyone sees in any of the Nolan trilogy films. Imo all three are dull dreary piles of boredom, but each to their own. The people that like them can watch them but I won't waste my time with them again.
    Ooh I wonder how much hate I'm going to get for this comment? Tons, I expect.

    Amazing reaction to one of the best Batman films! I can’t wait to see The Dark Knight with Heath Ledger! If loved Michael Cain (Alfred) I recommend Miss Congeniality with Sandra Bullock. For Liam Neeson, the Taken trilogy and Disney’s The Chronicles of Narnia! 🦇🩶🖤💛
