Hello! With COVID-19 delaying some bigger projects, I decided to take a step back and do some smaller episodes. It was a nice change of pace! Hope you enjoy learning about Crusader of Centy. Yeah, it's a Zelda clone. But dang, it is a good one!
What about TV Gakken boy 1983?
Have you done any videos about the Neo Geo AES system and its games yet?
Thanks for another great video, Norm! Had fun hanging out while you streamed this on Twitch. :)
Plzz do long video it for contra
good video! i liked how you seamlessly transitioned between topics in the video. zelda like games are uncommon and centy is a bit of an oddity. ill end this off by saying please, please, please cover the swordquest games on atari 2600.

I sold my childhood copy at a game store when I cleared out my collection. I went back 9 years later and bought back my same cart. It still had my game saves on it.
@@brpadington It used to be so much fun searching through toy bins at thrift stores for games and accessories before everyone knew what they had. I've been a pack rat for old games my whole life, so it was definitely sad to watch the era of hunting for cheap games die out. At least there's still a bit of hope with rummage sales and people who get burned out on collecting and eventually want it all gone

This looks to be the best sega genesis game that I could have ever played and never heard of till decades later.
It pretty much was, it really is nothing like zelda, but whatever
I played it back in the 90s, one of the very few games translated to Spanish back then, and tried it again a couple of years ago... it really isn't that good. It's a pretty game, but IMO its gameplay and level design are a bit boring. Beyond Oasis is way more fun.
You should play Shining Force!
@@JKujin I have and have beaten all the Shining Force games.
@@elbitxo5945 I do have Beyond Oasis and have completed it as well.
This is one of the most underrated games ever. I play through it every year or so. The music is really memorable and the game is loaded with charm. This game is incredibly rare. It was a limited release. Most people have never heard of it.
I'm so glad my brother made me play the game back in the day. The whole thing is a banger to be honest. The church song (Place of Peace) is still one of favourite theme songs and left an impact on me like not many others. People tend to criticise the Genesis for it's poorly sounding sound chip, but honestly this game brings all of it's spectrum, in it's OST.
Had to have it,......
Played it.....was not happy....
It's not bad at all.....
Just meh.....
@@CNSabata The Genesis sounds killer when the composer knows how to use it. I agree that the place of piece track is killer. That whole sequence blew my mind on my first play through.
Rarest game I've seen since PlayStation's Disruptor.
Do we know who has the right for this game? It’s original developer is now defunct but Sega’s still obviously alive! Does Sega have the rights?
"This sounds cool, wonder how much it is"
*Atlus Software*
Nevermind...
every game that has atlus on the cover before p3 fes is so damn overpriced
Just about, my exact thoughts as well.
Well, Atlus Software published the game only in the United States, Sega themselves published it everywhere else.
@@MegaAnimazing that my be true but atlus publish such niche games. So old games published by atlus always manage to curve back up in price.
@@lucyakaluckstat yeah nocturne its totally overprice.
My buddy Roger was really into RPGs & usually I just watched him play. However when he started playing Crusader of Centy & you had the power of animals I started to take notice. Soon we started taking turns. A few years ago I bought a Japan SEGA Nomad & it came with a 600 in 1 Cartridge & low in behold it has Ragnacenty on it. The wording is in Japan, so I am slowing working my way through it. Playing it this way makes it feel truer to the animal powers as you do not understand humans at all or anything for that matter. Really enjoying it this way for some reason!
Kids today won't understand how relentless was the 90s console war. All the dead people, entire cities devastated, and then the famine and the diseases that came after the war. Those were truly dark times.
Same thing happened with PS3 vs Xbox 360. Charging 600 bucks, red rings of death, online subscription fees, multiple rereleasing of the console at different price points, all out nuclear war.
Glad it is over (even if Sony was one of the many reasons why Sega has lost and that Nintendo was in an hard time)
@@ikagura Sega lost because they took over their American division. And the aftermath was unsustainable.
I served in the console wars, dark times indeed.
@@ricky-sanchez It's much more complicated, this is why I said "one of the many reasons". Nintendo is partly responsible as they're the reason why the Playstation wasn't just a SNES add-on and Sega was the reason why Sony's console was 3D-focused as well
I played Crusader of Centy when it first game out, and although I had already played and loved Zelda a Link to the Past and a Link's Awakening, I never really thought of it as a Zelda clone. It's a great classic. To me the Sega Genesis holds it's own in the RPG department to the SNES, especially if one takes the Sega CD/Mega CD into the equation. 16 bit was a golden age for RPG's.
There were some good games, no doubt, but they weren't the best games, by far. I mean, Chrono trigger and FF6 are STILL some of the best games ever made. No one is talking about Phantasy star 4. = D
@@iami3rian394 Yes the Megadrive/Genesis RPG's don't get talked about as much as the great SNES classics, but that doesn't make them any less significant to connoisseurs of the genre imo.

@@virtualemon
I’m a Zelda fan.
I don’t understand them either.
I knew this game looked familiar. "Soleil" as it was called in Europe was one of my first adventure game on my brother's Megadrive. Later our cousin gave us his SNES when he got the PlayStation. Discovered Nintendo's games at that time. Good times...
Ohhhh, this is Soleil? I was wondering why I'd never heard of "Crusader of Centy". Yeah, I've heard of Soleil for years, always meant to check it out.
While Beyond Oasis is also a good game, it's weird to me Sega never puts Centy on any of their re-release collections alongside it. And the part about Atlus publishing it in the West shouldn't be a problem since Sega owns them now so there's no publishing rights issue.
do you know how many extremely blatant clones of their games exist and nintendo is allowing to exist even on their own, modern consoles like the nintendo switch?
You can't copyright mechanics, and the game really had nothing to do with Zelda, it is an adventure game, but, please check it, it has really awesome things like combining animal powers and time travel
@Michael Persico It has nothing to do with Nintendo. Streets of Rage is a Final Fight clone, and it's on every new Sega compilation.
Sega? You reading this?
@Michael Persico, nah, Nintendo has an official version of Giana Sisters nowadays. So that is not a problem. I bet it rather is not on the Sega folks radar, they simply forgot it exists.
Bought it when it came out here in Europe, still is one of my all time fav. The soundtrack was outstanding! I still whistle some of the themes from time to time.
Worth noting that this game's soundtrack is full of certified bangers. It's also one of my favorite Genesis games. Extremely underrated. Would love to see SEGA rerelease it in a collection now that they have full rights to it since they own Atlus now (who originally co-published it with SEGA).
Not sure if you’ve heard the news, but Crusader of Centy is actually one of the 40 titles included on the Genesis mini 2

16-bit action-RPGs are the best types of games. There's just something so authentic and warm about them.
most 16 bit ARPGs have not aged well. at all.
@@GiordanDiodato Says the kid who was probably born after the year 2000. I'd say 16-bit games in general have aged far better than the PS1/N64 era of games and even the 8-bit era that preceded it. The amount of legendary titles in this time period (and especially RPGs) cannot be understated.
@@veteran0121 you’re 100% right. SNES/Genesis were the peak of 2D gaming. Most games on these platforms are timeless while their 8-bit predecessors are ass for the most part.
I played through this game right after watching this video and it's awesome. Not quite A Link to the Past, but almost as fun. The animals really add something unique that you don't see in many other games. Instead of the typical bow, candle, magic whatever item, they give you a bunch of animals that either improve your abilities or let you do things you couldn't do without them. It would've been cool if there were more combinations that did something, but the things you could do by combining some were a really great touch. Every Zelda fan needs to play this game.

Still listen to the soundtrack to this day.
12 year old, megadrive-owning me was beyond pumped for this game to release back in '95. And when it did, it proved to be one of the rare occasions where the hype was justified. I imagine the story would be quite hammy to an adult audience now, but I found it really touching as a kid. Awesome gaming memories with this episode. Thanks for sharing!
I had the luck of being able to rent this game when I was younger.

Don't abandon these type of episodes Norm. Truly enjoyable..
I feel like 'Landstalker' was another game in a similar Zelda-clone vein, but was itself quite a good game
Landstalker was definitely the system’s “answer” to Zelda in 1993 but it is far from a clone. For starters the isomeric perspective was something very different especially given the focus on platforming. Some found that aspect frustrating but the perspective also gave the game world a solidity that comparable games lacked.
Kinda funny you mentioned Landstalker. Both Landstalker and Crusader of Centy were added to the June 2023 NSO update
@@bbarrett726 what is NSO? Edit: google is my friend lol. So glad this is on the switch now!

@@fawfulmark2 Yeah their older games are the expensive ones. Game store near me has a fully in-box Brigadine (with the map, manual, and all that jazz) for PS1. It's almost $200. And thats a *good* price for that game.

fawfulmark2 Cubivore is expensive? WTF, Just for collectors?
This is one of those games I never ever ever heard about until the CZcams era despite me being a very active gamer in the 90s. No wonder the game is expensive now, few knew about it and even less bought it. It does look awesome, I wonder who has the rights for it? If Sega does there could be hope for a rerelease.
agreed. it'd be cool to play as Corona in hi-def 16:9
This game looks fantastic. I've been craving an action RPG in this style for a while now, I may have to load this up on my PSP emulator.
I remember finding this game on an out-of-state class trip back in junior high school. I had read about it in Electronic Gaming Monthly but had never seen a copy anywhere else, and I knew I had to have it. I spent all my remaining money on it, bummed meals for the rest of the trip, and played it late into the night when I got back home (already late at night). Totally worth it!
Later I did the same thing on another school trip, finding a copy of Shining Force CD at a Microplay in a mall. I never saw another copy in the wild... we're totally spoiled today with online commerce!
Corona is the proof that you either die a hero or live enough to become the villain.

It's actually the spanish word for "Crown". Like one of the most well known beers in the world, "Corona". It's more of a shocker to see how people are flipping out about the word since the pandemic. It's cool Norman didn't make a big deal out of it in the video.

It's worth playing for the story alone, and the animation and music are thoroughly charming. It's not terribly difficult, but then I don't think it needs to be. Just playing it is a reward in itself.

Thìs game still is one of my favourites, after all these years. The message it conveys is a lot different than zelda and a lot better than in most rpgs at the time.
“Definitely give Crusader of Centy a try, even if it is only Zelda on the Genesis”

it's worth it. the different animals give you a lot to play with.
some combinations lead to special effects - for example lion (fire magic) + penguin (ice magic) gives strongest ice magic (don't ask :) )
only "problem" - it's a bit to easy ^^
Now do one on Sony's Zelda clone, Alundra.
Oh, that game was VERY good.
Better yet, do Brave Fencer Musashi!
@brendan wright Alundra has a great story, what are you talking about?
LAY THE SMACKDOWN ON YOUR CANDY ASS FOR THAT UNEDUCATED BULLLLLLLLLLLLLLLSHIT. Alundra is the spiritual successor to Landstalker- the best game ever made.
@brendan wright Weird. 30 hour average playtime for an RPG is "too long"? Bad story when it's vastly superior to pretty much all Zelda games? Infuriating dungeons when the increased difficulty was welcomed from how easy the Zelda series is?
I view Alundra as a Zelda game for older gamers. More mature narrative and increased difficulty, along with platforming.

^^^This I loved LandStalker. When I saw "Genesis Zelda" I'd assumed it was about Landstalker
It always confused me how the word "clone" is used in the video game industry. How can this be a Zelda clone with dozends of animal companions giving you unique attacks and a jumping character just to name two very different aspects that are not just "small details", that's like the opposite of what "clone" means per definition, it doesn't even have open world like wtf. There were famous "clones" in the industry with the correct meaning of the word, using a game or even copying the code at several points and just putting other sprites, colours, names, etc. on it but this is to me much more than a clone and I absolutely love what I see, maybe will try to find it for an emulator or something, thanks for showing me a new seemingly great game.
It just how many players felt, it felt similar. Such as Okami, many say it a ' Zelda Clone ' , I think not. It has the Bushes. Well depends on you.
Thank you sir. From my point of view its a complete different and original game. with a way deeper plot that somehow explains and exposes racism.
would "rip off" be a better description? The fact that they took Link to the Past and reverse engineered it doesn't make this a game not worth playing. I'd just look at it as a second quest to Zelda and still enjoy it. much of what they added makes for an interesting playthrough.
