- We're in Saitama, Japan, a hour or so outside of Tokyo, for round eight of the MFJ All Japan MX Championship. Trey Canard is a wildcard entrant aboard the prototype Honda CRF Electric and he is looking smooth and comfortable on the electric machine. It is always a pleasure to chat with Canard, and he had a lot to say...

I ran into Trey Canard when I was working
At sprouts farmers Market 😂 and we had a conversation back when he was factory Honda
One of the best personalities of all time. Up there with Pastrana and Jett Lawrence.

Honestly life gets busy and doing regular motorcycle maintenance can be a huge pain. I think electric dirt bikes will be sweet. Only downside is not hearing the bike bark and horrible battery life but it will be great for building more tracks.

very true. on the flip side, you could have a supercross race inside the local 2-story mall (which of course would be otherwise dead because online shopping 😄) with ebikes. and without the engine noise, you become more easily attuned to what your bike is doing (and what you're doing to your bike). but tbh, I think thumpers killed the beautiful sound of mx bikes. 🤨

@@micahhook3576owned an electric bike for three years. The huge downside is you’ll have to change a lot of tires. Riding so much wears out a lot of tires! 😢 You also have to replace more crashed parts. More riding equals more crashes and worn out grips too. At least washing them is faster. It gets old washing because you’re riding so much.

Electric and gas powered can co-exist. Look at RC, nitro and elec races with each having there own appeal. Gives you the option.
barring really significant advances in battery range, off road / day riding is going to be combustible-driven for a long time. however, I think the flatout superiority of ebikes on the mx track does push combustibles out of the most competitive circuits in the next 5 years (10 at most). the Varg is already faster (more or less). it needs more uptime on a single battery charge or a swappable battery (the same way you'd just refill a gas tank). but MX/SX is so quick that the charge really only needs to last 35-50 mins and then be replenishable/replaceable for a 2nd moto on the same day. they aren't there yet, but it's in sight. and the weight can be reduced as battery efficiency increases as well. it's a niche for sure. but it's going to be the fastest niche in mx/sx. /2cents

I wasn’t following MX when Trey was racing. So I’ve only ever seen him in test riding videos. But the impressions I get from him is he’s like a big kid lovable dork. And I mean that as a compliment.

I haven’t ridden an Ebike yet, but I always have a left finger or two on the clutch… just feel like these bikes need a clutch for safety of the everyday rider especially… two things save ya from going down riding…. Left hand or right wrist

the effects of engine inertia or lack thereof is the biggest difference. I've heard that on a few reviews now. followed by traction, then torque. wonder where Honda is with battery charge times, uptime, and decay rates?
I have been waiting for this interview. Interesting how he says he is faster on the 450. He can scrub better on the ebike. I've been a Trey fan for a long time.

Love Trey, may God be with you today Trey:-) This is the future. E-bikes have their place for sure. Gas will be around for a long time. I can see areas opening up to e-bikes only and that would be awesome. Hope the AMA has an e-bike support class soon.

Be nice for the electric bikes to be in their own group as I have no interest in seeing the mix of 450's and these bikes in a race. But as others have said, the potential for race and single tracks to be built because of these could be huge.

Electric not gonna happen believe me. Yes they gonna sell some here and there, Some factory riders riding it for commercial purposes, Some locals races with a new category with 2 or 3 riders, But that’s all. Is not like Electric Supercross or Motocross at all.

Moto needs an open class again. Something where there are zero barriers and restrictions. An electric bike, 700cc 2 stroke, 500 4 stroke or whatever you bring to the starting line and just let them go.

They won’t be combined here soon. Electric will have its own separate classes/series. Gas bikes aren’t going anywhere.
Will probably be separate for lots of reasons.
He will win the Japan National easy on that bike. He will have to slow down to not embares the other riders.

Those electric bikes are going to ruin the sport of motocross absolute garbage wasn't a fan when they started doing the four strokes either but they are better than those electric crap. Bring back the two strokes now those were some bikes and they're still awesome to this day.
