What I love most about Matt is his ability to argue not like a fan boy, but a true professional with vast experience. Every day I have more respect for your analyzes

Great analysis Matt , pretty much matches what i was thinking .
Who knows , in 10 - 15 years i might be able to afford a used one . Stand by for my review.😅

Prototype at the Olympics for sure. I've always like the "look" of Canon cameras. This is an example of their aesthetics/pro build and what looks like a true flagship, IMO. I personally don't need anything faster than the Z9 can do. Good to see Canon at least promising something new.

It will be very interesting to see what Nikon and Sony release in the next 6-12 months! I think both companies will continue to use high resolution (45+ megapixels) sensors in their flagship cameras and offer improved speed, faster frame rates, precapture in RAW, and improved AF speed, tracking, and subject recognition.

See what this R1 has in the bag? Canon has to pull off some magic to dethrone the Z9,A1 and SL3. As a Nikon user, I'm interested to see what Nikon will do with RED? Now they owned the establishment? I expect this R1 to be above 7k USD. Already the prices on RF lenses have gone through the roof over the past 3 years. Thank God, we now have lots of third party lenses coming on strong

Not a canon shooter. I'm holding out for a z6iii and an 85 1.2 for the same cost as the R1. I don't need the megapixels but would l would love improved AF in a mid range camera.

Good anaysis as usual Matt. Not a Canon user but if I were, I don't think this would be of interest. Having said that, I'm happy to see Canon finally coming out with their 'offical' flagship as healthy competition between the producers will advance the market as a whole, I'm sure as the Olympics draw closer we will hear more specs on the R1 and as you speculate I imagine this will be a FPS beast.

Agree with you Matt that it will be 30mp and l don't think we will see it till Feb next year also agree that being their flagship was 1DX with 20mp they thought 24mp would be fine till Nikon decided to have a flagship at 45mp so they quickly made it an R3. I believe the sensor will be stacked not global and yes l think Canon are focusing on autofocus.

I think this camera is geared towards sports photographers. I can see whythey would use 24 or 30 mp. That does help with read out speed on the sensor and perform better in low light. It may have great video specs but I don't think this camera is really meant for video. I think the R5 II will be better for video.

The Canon R1 Can't be vaporware because it has already been announced. Folks that keep claiming the R3 was Canon's Flagship camera, well it wasn't. The R1 is Canon's Flagship camera. Period.

      @MattIrwinPhotography  Před měsícem +2

We will never know what the original internal plans were in 2020/2021. Indeed today, the R1 will be the flagship mirrorless. And for sure it is not vapourware, I look forward seeing it what it brings to the community.

If you are right, then it sounds like the R1 is simply a R3+ (what Nikon used to do with "s", D300s, D3s, D4s).

    I'm not yet impressed.
Having spent the weekend watching the AF on my camera stuck to the eyes of the subject, leads me to state the fields in which we work are now levelled.
Your observations and comments are on the money though Matt, I'm reminded of previous crippled, compromised, crap bodies that canon (canoff / canot) have expected their users to get excited. And lets not get started on their Heath Robinson gimmicks!
I am intrigued to understand whether canon have even recognised the market has changed, or maybe the market changes are reason enough for their delay, however the fact remains they're +3-years behind the competition curve, who likely will release their iteration 2's before we see this body land.
I do wonder what are their intentions for the R3(dud) that has retained its stupid overpriced status, I would expect to see the used bodies shelves rapidly fill as the phobes ditch the old crippled puppy for next years model. Only to discover, yet again . . .
The industry need canon to be bold and brave with a revitalised enthusiastic strategy, but I fear shrugging off the accolades of history will be too much of a burden that will result in continued downward-spiral of their market share, they value so much. If only they valued their user base equally.
Of course this camera is only for the top 1% canon shooters, but its technology must port down through the range quickly, and if this tech is only about AF, they're in trouble already as the slack has been taken up by the competitors.
I'm not in the queue to buy one, I'm in the ever growing queue expecting not to be disappointed, for once.

Remember the excellent photos taken with cameras without AI, AF, and the myriad of electronic assistance or electronics that think for you? Yea, an image taken by developed skill, thinking for yourself, and talent. I find the electronics of my most recent cameras more a hindrance than an aid.
How about thinking separate video devices than it built into a stills camera. How about calling 120 fps stills cameras pot luck catching an image; not talent, not a decisive moment, but just dumb luck that one of the images was what you wanted.
Remember the days of the bellows cameras - view camera, where every shot was actually thought out in advance? Talent and a good eye mattered. Skill mattered.
Photography is dying, thanks to IA and just cranking out thousands of shots and maybe one might be good.
I have a friend with everything you can imagine, but still can’t take more than a snapshot. His old days with film had much better shots; he stopped and thought it out. Another friend believes her photos are great with an iPhone - not really; she was so much better with her Nikon FE. I did better before being overwhelmed with electronics; ten sheets, a roll or two of 36, 120/220 meant doing the best with a limited number of shots and using my eye and, oh my, my mind.
Even with a D200 or a D850 it was more pleasurable taking photos. Now, a generation or two later, it’s the electronics, not the photography.
My D810 is married to a 16mm fisheye. My D850 has everything from 14mm to 400 f/2.8. I’m debating which of my other D cameras to convert it IR. There is a physicality with their use. My Z cameras don’t have that. Neither do the other brands that are just super processing sterile devices.
    IMHO
