The contests were an interesting inclusion and the Kanto stuff was definitely handled better than the Hoenn ones but I still feel that contests didn't really hit their stride until Sinnoh. A lot more character, a lot more flare (which makes sense considering the context), better arcs, more interesting battles and easily the best Grand Festival. Honestly I can just rewatch each of the contest episodes of Sinnoh in the same way that I can gym battles and league episodes.
Huh, literally caught it just a minute after launch. I have to say, giving May another contest campaign in Kanto was a brilliant move, especially when considering the lacklustre way her Hoenn contest journey ended. May's Kanto contest journey imo is even more integral to her character development as it gives her a chance to show off her improved skills, as well as giving her another important lesson in the sense that in order to truly develop as an true Coordinator, she would have to leave Ash's side and stake out on her own journey.

In general, there’s just a lot of really well written episodes that are on par with XY’s episodes! Diamond and Pearl has the best rival arc of all time, but it also has a lot of lackluster stories too. It was just too long, and that’s because it took Game Freak so long to make Black and White. But then the opposite happened and the Black and White anime suffered severely from being rushed.

Because Pokemon is a series about adventure and traveling and if you take away the "filler" which is every episode that doesn't have a major plot point like gym battles, contests, Pokemon captures, Pokemon evolutions and evil team encounters then you wouldn't be left with much.
The Kanto grandfestival was really good I so miss Drew and Harley I wish they will return also yeah Soledad it's Mays Tobias but without the legendaries 😂

I agree, the ending was super rushed. What I did like about it though, is that Scott pointed out how May's head-on fighting style, which she copied from Ash, didn't work on Solidad (god I hope I spelled that right). This makes May realize she can't keep depending on others and needs to figure out her own fighting style, which is why she leaves the gang. It's great that they gave her a legitimate reason for leaving, and that it didn't come out of nowhere too.
Alpha-sama Would definitely have been worth seeing the battle get its own episode, or even half an episode to see Scott make that observation. Even showing more of Solidad’s other battles so we could see her battle for more than just the end of hers and May’s match. Scott’s words about May taking her battle style from Ash could even have gotten him thinking about his Battle Pyramid challenge, showing that as much as Ash taught her she also had something to teach him.
Ngl I wish they had an extra episode in this arc so we could see may and solidad's battle in its entirety. The way may lost here felt kinda rushed, which I didn't like too much. Ash usually had at least one episode dedicated to whoever beat him in the leagues before Alola so may should have gotten the same deal

I was kind of okay with the trade, since they foreshadowed Aipom liking contest throughout many episodes, and Buizel being more a battler. What was annoying was Ambipom's sudden interest in ping-pong when it never showed interest or talent in it beforehand, nor was it foreshadowed. It became as a stupid reason for Ambipom to leave, when so far it's been one of Dawn's best contest pokemon. Also both Ambipom and Buizel were a good connection between Ash and Dawn, being the first (and so far only) pokemon traded between friends/traveling companions in the series.

I honestly enjoyed this grand festival minus the ending and this is really nice seeing May’s overall growth as a coordinator and May vs Drew in the Kanto Grand Festival was really good and Ash’s small pep talk with Drew was a nice touch leading to his matchup with May.
Curious what you will think about dawns Grand Festival. For me that one feels a bit like Kalos league. Eventhough there was a rival battle against ursula it went quite quickly to the semi-finals just like the Kalos League. And Dawn never won in a direct contest battle against Zoey! (same as Ash never won against Alain.) and also quite close loss.
Kinda feels like the Sinoh league which is also all about the rival battle. Where May finally beats Drew (compared the Ash finally beating Paul). Same with having quite a quick semi-finals were May (and Ash in the sinoh league, although that was still a whole really awesome episode, where ash even defeats legendaries.... so not sure if you can compare) loses really quickly.
I thought the Kanto Grand Festival was pretty good it had the best contest battles up until this point. The anime creators still didn’t really master how to make good Contests till Sinnoh though.
Now onto the Sinnoh Grand Festival, which I can't wait for. And then after that. Um, I'm not sure, I'd guess either Serena's Master Class Showcase or maybe the Club Battle Tournaments from Unova, one of the few good things from Unova, although like the rest of Unova they still had problems. I mean seriously Trip loses to Cilen and Biannca, that really undercuts him as the main rival if he can't beat these trainers that are logically weaker then Ash who Trip has beaten so logically he should be able to beat them, he's a far cry from Gary and especially from Paul.
Fun fact about Solidad: Three of her onscreen Pokémon shown are Pokémon Ash has had as well. Coincidentally, all of them happen to be the only three Pokémon Ash has released in the series up until that point. They also share the same VA in the English dub.
Tsuria Dragon This might prove unpopular, but it’s because Advanced Generation gave May her own storyline and character arc that I prefer her over Misty. The Original Generation was majorly guilty of not giving Misty or Brock much in the way of active plot lines or arcs. Sure, there were things like Misty and Togepi, and the Whirl Island Cup tournament, but contests not only gave May a drive, it also provided a b-plot to reduce filler.

sqatch92 Sinnoh definitely upped the visual flair with the ball seals and coordinators needed to dress up. Sinnoh also showed that the flair needed to be used carefully, such as when Dawn’s Ambipom overdid the Swift and obscured everyone from seeing it. The double battles also produced some beautiful combination moves to deliver devastating and beautiful attacks.

Varun Sah The thing with Drew that was fixed with Paul is that we got to know who Paul was outside of up his rivalry with Ash as early as his encounter with Cynthia in the first DP season, and explored through the appearances of his brother Reggie. Drew, the first time we learn anything about him that isn’t linked to his Pokemon or May is in this arc from Solidad, and this is the penultimate significant appearance of Drew. There’s one more episode with him, May and Harley which sows the seeds for May’s next journey, but it goes back into tying into the rivalries May has with Drew and Harley. Even though he’s from the high tech LaRousse City, from the Deoxys film, nothing about his character suggests he’s used to high tech, which could have been a point of making the character more interesting.

Varun Sah During the Wallace Cup we see Drew and Harley watching May’s performance, Drew’s Roselia having evolved into Roserade. It would have been great to get a Chronicles type episode or mini series showing May, Harley and Drew in Johto, seeing May on her own and getting new episode in Johto. There were specials set after the DP and BW series to show where Ash’s companions from those series went after parting ways with him, but the episodes for Brock and Dawn were never dubbed. The Dawn episode is where her Cyndaquil evolved, so its evolution doesn’t appear in dubbed form. I think one special even had Cilan visiting Kalos and encountering Clement and Bonnie, both groups unaware they’d both travelled with Ash.
The Kanto Grand Festival is good but I stilled wished May have a full team of six before she gets a chance to enter the Kanto Grand Festival or at least get her combusken, Squirtle, Munchlax and Eeevee to evolved fully. Still I really don't understand why she had left her Beautifly and Skitty back home in the Hoenn region even those I've already know why, but seriously she should have brough them along to her new journey in the Kanto region as since she continue to travel with Ash again and since she was planning to enter Pokemon contest in the Kanto region.
I like to consider the beautifly and combusken vs roselia and butterfree battle episode to be like a secondary finale of this arc it's also just really cool to see may using the cool combo if fire spin and psychic and seeing beautifly again
Pokemon should have ended after the sinnoh league..... And ash should have defeated Tobias and become the winner and defeat cynthias garchomp with his charizard and become the champion... Perfect ending of the anime👌👌They are extending it for no reason😕😕
I disagree with the fact that may and solidad’s fight being one sided was a bad thing. This is cuz may realized she still has a long way to go as a coordinator. And it builds up something big for her too. Ash brock max and scott all realized she’s been fighting a lot like ash and she noticed it herself. So in the next few episodes, may tried to figure out her own style of battling, something only she could make by herself. So the one sided fight was a very good moment for may
May vs Drew was probably one the best battles of the whole Advanced saga, easily.
Easily. Between this, Ash vs Brandon (round 3), and Ash vs Norman (except for Max), May vs Drew (Kanto) might just be top-tier stuff.

I agree. You didn't get a lot of double battles and combo attacks in the main plot line, so the contests usually had more interesting visuals.
Make every pokegirl just do contests? Doesn't seems good idea to me.
sqatch92 Sinnoh definitely upped the visual flair with the ball seals and coordinators needed to dress up. Sinnoh also showed that the flair needed to be used carefully, such as when Dawn’s Ambipom overdid the Swift and obscured everyone from seeing it. The double battles also produced some beautiful combination moves to deliver devastating and beautiful attacks.

Varun Sah The thing with Drew that was fixed with Paul is that we got to know who Paul was outside of up his rivalry with Ash as early as his encounter with Cynthia in the first DP season, and explored through the appearances of his brother Reggie. Drew, the first time we learn anything about him that isn’t linked to his Pokemon or May is in this arc from Solidad, and this is the penultimate significant appearance of Drew. There’s one more episode with him, May and Harley which sows the seeds for May’s next journey, but it goes back into tying into the rivalries May has with Drew and Harley. Even though he’s from the high tech LaRousse City, from the Deoxys film, nothing about his character suggests he’s used to high tech, which could have been a point of making the character more interesting.

Varun Sah During the Wallace Cup we see Drew and Harley watching May’s performance, Drew’s Roselia having evolved into Roserade. It would have been great to get a Chronicles type episode or mini series showing May, Harley and Drew in Johto, seeing May on her own and getting new episode in Johto. There were specials set after the DP and BW series to show where Ash’s companions from those series went after parting ways with him, but the episodes for Brock and Dawn were never dubbed. The Dawn episode is where her Cyndaquil evolved, so its evolution doesn’t appear in dubbed form. I think one special even had Cilan visiting Kalos and encountering Clement and Bonnie, both groups unaware they’d both travelled with Ash.

The Kanto Grand Festival is good but I stilled wished May have a full team of six before she gets a chance to enter the Kanto Grand Festival or at least get her combusken, Squirtle, Munchlax and Eeevee to evolved fully. Still I really don't understand why she had left her Beautifly and Skitty back home in the Hoenn region even those I've already know why, but seriously she should have brough them along to her new journey in the Kanto region as since she continue to travel with Ash again and since she was planning to enter Pokemon contest in the Kanto region.

I like to consider the beautifly and combusken vs roselia and butterfree battle episode to be like a secondary finale of this arc it's also just really cool to see may using the cool combo if fire spin and psychic and seeing beautifly again

Pokemon should have ended after the sinnoh league..... And ash should have defeated Tobias and become the winner and defeat cynthias garchomp with his charizard and become the champion... Perfect ending of the anime👌👌They are extending it for no reason😕😕

I disagree with the fact that may and solidad’s fight being one sided was a bad thing. This is cuz may realized she still has a long way to go as a coordinator. And it builds up something big for her too. Ash brock max and scott all realized she’s been fighting a lot like ash and she noticed it herself. So in the next few episodes, may tried to figure out her own style of battling, something only she could make by herself. So the one sided fight was a very good moment for may
