  • Have you ever wanted to mix your songs on a real mixer out of the box?
    Well now you can with the SOUNDCRAFT MTK 22.
    I'll walk you through my introduction to this board and show you around.
    I'll talk about it's set up into our system and which D.A.W. software I used to check it.
    I think you will find this series Informative if you plan on adding this mixer to your setup.

    I remixed 14 instrument tracks of a tune i wrote years ago and had recorded in the box. I found the original tracks and started from scratch through my MTK22 tossing out the DAW effects as they were on seperate tracks. There was no MIDI. The result was much, much better. I noticed the distraction of 300 available plug-ins was out of the way. I was still able to set a plug-in as an outboard effect in the DAW agreeing to have available no more than two of any gadget. I could sit and stare at the board and dream along with the sound. A much calmer experience. The sweetness of tactile feel and response can not be underestimated. Difficult to explain to dyed in the wool 'boxers.'
    So happy I found this video. I'm 70 years old and started on one of those Peavey PA 600 boards with the big knobs, no faders and not much in the way of anything else except some stoner vocalist believing he's on his way Stardom. I have no fear of technology, never have. It's just a tool to aid in the Vision and groceries. A Great Video. Thanks you, my Friend. Oh, yeah. . . the lights could have been adjusted .00374 degrees north and the mic levels . . . well. . . a quarter of a dB north also.

    Nice video! Four years later and it's still finding new viewers!
    I was looking for this board for a while, found it used and had to buy it since it's not available anymore.
    I love this board! I've been using it for the past year and it's been a lot of fun learning how to work with it. It's made my approach to writing, recording and mixing so much more interesting and creative.
    I've learned about the various downsides to this board since getting it: The big one, lack of an "on/off" switch. If you own this board be sure to plug it into a power strip with an on/off switch and use that to power the mixer on and off.
    The other downside is the lack of insert points. It definitely would be nice to have them but it's not a deal breaker for me. The only real downside is now I want to invest in a bunch of outboard gear and keep upgrading gear! Oh, the struggle is real! 🤣

    I've had one of these for about 2 years now. It interfaces perfectly with ProTools. After getting this, I'll never understand why anyone would want to be limited to a small interface and mixing in the box. If you've never used a desk designed for multi-track recording and mixing like this one, you don't know what you're missing. The mic pre's and EQ are really good and you have all of this on every channel strip. The routing capabilities are awesome as well. It has 2 Lexicon effects processors built in, DBX limiters on the first 8 channels, AND on channels 7, 8, 9, and 10 Hi Z transformers at the push of a button. The big advantage for me is the way this console speeds things up. Anyone who has worked in the box knows how limiting it can be pointing and clicking your way through one setting at a time, even with a trackball. With this, or any recording console, you can, ride a fader, pan things around, change EQ settings, etc. almost at the same time. Even being able to pan a guitar around in the mix while riding the channel fader checking it's level at different places in the mix really helps. Once you learn to mix in a hybrid fashion with this console and the DAW of your choice, you'll be amazed at what you can do. One more thing, 2 years ago when I got mine, it was 799.95. The last time I saw a price it was 899.95. Well worth the price for what you get in my opinion.

      I'm researching different mixers at the moment , really like the MTK22 but one thing that bothers me is the fact that when multitracking into the DAW the audio does not pass through the EQ. Should I be worried about this or am I overthinking it?

      Hey Karl, I don't know how long you've been recording and mixing, but my preferred method is to get the sound right going in and using the EQ to fine tune the mix. What I've done many times is to send a bus send to an AUX track in Pro Tools during tracking and send that back to the console and use the EQ if I think I need it. That way I have both to work with.
      No, you're not overthinking this, thinking is good when finding ways to create music. I'm still finding new ways to use this console and Pro Tools to do things.

      @ME's Music Sorry I took a while to get back to you. Yes, that's correct. I don't know what DAW you have but if your DAW is recognizing the channels on the board, then all you do is hit the usb return button on the channel(s) you want to mix and you can use the eq. That's assuming, of course, you have your I/O in your DAW configured correctly. I have Pro Tools and that software can be a little finicky at times. It wants the settings to be just right. It took me a bit to get Pro Tools to recognize the interface in the Soundcraft board, but once I had everything right, it's worked perfectly for over 2 years.

    Been using this for about 2 years now...with Cubase...no complaints..love the flexibility and I am also one that likes to do a "hands on" mix....it's amazing how you can breathe life into the exact same song by using the faders and EQ to create a different dynamic on each take...the most difficult thing to do is know when to stop because you can mix a song an unlimited amount of times...learning to use your gut and move on to the next mix is not that easy...at least not for me. There is always that thing that can be a bit brighter, a bit louder or a bit more of this and a bit more of that...

      Tip mix into the mixroom and bassroom vst on your master ;) if you haven’t got a treated room this helps and you can play around with different eq curves for different genres, it helps with double guessing and creates a more balanced mix in result you get a better master ;)

      Adrian, thank you for watching. I think you should get a mixer like this just to wrap your head around "Real" mixing! Once you start to mix on this level you will see just how easy it is to cheat when you're inside The Box. Happy Mixing, Maxx!

    Hello this is Stephen from India.. I recently bought a soundcraft mkt 22 channel mixer and it Good, but when I am trying to record via USB its not working. For example when I am pressing the recording botton on mixer for the invidual but the sound output is not coming out through speakers or in laptop . Can u help me out to resolve this problem.

      @Expressway7  Před 3 lety +3

      Hey Stephen, sorry for taking so long to answer. The board does not have a "record" button so I'm not sure which button you are speaking about. But you have to go into your software settings and assign each and every channel to a channel on the board. If that doesnt help let me know.

    Does anyone know how to use the mixer with Zoom call?

    • @Expressway7
      @Expressway7  Před 4 lety +1

      Actually, I am using it now in ZOOM from my laptop, and I use it as an input source INTO the mixer, however it IS NOT the AUDIO device of the laptop . If you are using one computer and your mixer is the audio device of that computer, you will have to depress the "USB" button to hear the audio source of that computer.

    Good evening sir.
    Are you familiar with Maschine software? If so, do you think I can track out from that software to individual channels on the Soundcraft via USB? I make beats and would like to have the capability to mix them directly from my Maschine software to the Soundcraft via USB. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    • @Expressway7
      @Expressway7  Před 4 lety

      No, I do not use Mashine. You would have to consult your software manual to see if your software allows multiple Ins & Outs.

      you can, but you only get 8 inputs and 16 outs with maschine so the full board will not be used. you can use maschine in PLUGIN mode in another DAW to use more inputs and outs.
      I'm trying to do the same thing with this mixer but its making me consider ableton with maschine inside just to use this board

    • @Expressway7
      @Expressway7  Před 4 lety +2

      No you cannot use it with "ANY" D.A.W. You will have to make sure your D.A.W. supports multiple inputs/outputs in order to record or mix with it effectively. For instance: CAKEWALK will only allow 2track stereo in/out L-R.. I use Studio One and Ardour6 with no problems, again it depends on your D.A.W.

    I know you're trying to inform people yet a little planning may have helped.
    A camera looking down at the mixer.
    Lighting - so we can see the mixer.
    Audio - your levels are low.
    Video quality - 1080p may have been nicer.
