Anthony LaPaglia (Empire Records, Without a Trace) joins us this week to share story after story from his incredible tenure in this industry and how he’s been able to sustain such a respected career. Anthony drops a bomb when he talks about his recent ‘induced coma,’ the visions he had coming out of it, and the positive changes it brought to his life. We get into a lot this week… like stories of standing up to Val Kilmer, the harsh pressures of being the eldest son in an Italian family, aspirations for professional soccer, chasing the EGOT, problems with directors on set, arrests during Empire Records, and a whole lot more.

I worked on that show, for over a year, and I have to say I left with a huge crush on him. He seems off here, like he's sick or something, but at work he was so charismatic, so funny. Between scenes he'd be sitting in front of his Airstream trailer, smoking a cigar and talking on the phone to the person who co-owned a rugby team with him, lol. Such a character.

Those who lose their Australian accent to make it big in the US never become that successful. Look at Portia DeRossi. Being a try hard won't get you anywhere. On the other hand, Cate Blanchett and Nicole Kidman, two of the most famous Hollywood actresses, still retain their Australian accents. It's hilarious to me as it is pathetic.

I've worked in the industry a little bit wearing different hats (grip, set medic, set designer, script supervisor), sometimes more than one on the same set, and banter like what Val did can be either a welcoming sight or destroy whatever momentum they've built up. It all depends on the reaction and I think this reaction was perfect. It could easily have blown up and ruined a day of shooting, but he rolled with it. Sometimes shenanigans can build comradery and chemistry on a set and Star Trek : TNG is a perfect example of that.
I love these clips, as I've learned so many great things about some of my favorite actors, like when you had Annette O'Toole on talking about how she saw Christopher Reeve in his Superman suit for the first time. Great stuff. Same with your bits with Tom Welling talking about Smallville. I didn't care much for some of the writing, as I'm a pretty big Superman fan who grew up on Christopher Reeve/Richard Donner version, which I consider the gold standard, but it's just my opinion. Smallville's cast was great and did very well with what they were given. Again, my opinion. You're never going to make everyone happy, especially fans of arguably the most famous comic book character of all time. So my hat's off to you and the rest of the cast for taking it to 10 seasons. Not many comic book based or inspired TV shows can claim that.
I did like the episode where Christopher Reeve plays a scientist who discovers where Clark is from and I loved the idea of it being a "passing of the torch". Tom saying he didn't want to know too much about Superman before doing the show so he could have his own take on it, instead of trying to fulfill some notion of repetition or whatever (I can't remember the quote properly and I apologize), and I respect that. We want to see out heroes on screen, but different versions or takes is good as it gives them a chance to try to keep the essence of the story, "fix" a mistake made in previous versions, or go down a plot line in the comics no one has ever done before.
I can be pretty bull headed when it comes to accuracy, but as long as the core idea and concept of the character is there and nothing changed contradicts that .... I'm happy enough.
Thank you very much for these interviews and I hope they go on as long as possible.

Yes, he is amongst the large allay of Australian actors who have found success on US shores.
As an Australian, I am proud of so many Australian actors making it.
The highest grossing movie of 2023 ("Barbie") was lead by Australian Margot Robbie, who started out in Australian soapie "Neighbours", as did Guy Pearce and Holly Vallance.
Chris Hemsworth was in another Australian soapie called "Home And Away" before hitting Hollywood.
Simon Baker from "The Mentalist" said that he was told directors like to work with Australian actors as they are often more humble and work harder, as they had to work hard to even get into Hollywood to begin with. They are less likely to be divas or think that they are owed something.

He also played the (I think unnamed) lead actor in the Movie that Christopher and the other Sopranos Charcters produced. Betsys Wedding probably won't be lauded by the Library of Congress anytime soon. Nevertheless, its charming and likable and LaPaglia STEALS that movie as hard as anyone ever stole anything!

The most amazing bit of trivia with Anthony is he was 1 of a few actors originally chosen to play Tony Soprano before Jim Gandalfini. Due to previous project scheduling which he couldn't get out of he had to turn it down.
The actor he called an azzhole & who he replaced was Daniel Benzali (look him up, you'll recognize his face) in the TV series Murder One in the mid-90s. Benzali was fired cuz after the 1st season, the show had low ratings, which is why he might not have been nice to Anthony, but the show did worse with Anthony & lasted 2 more seasons only.
Benzali was engaged to Kim Cattrell, but they broke up right before she was offered Sex & the City. H'wood certainly seems to be a '7 Degrees of' community all around.

As a British lover of all things Frasier I am afraid his accent as her brother eclipsed Don Cheadle’s car crash on Ocenas 11
Hands down the worst attempt I have seen on TV
It is also made no sense geographically.Daphne was Mancunian. He,therefore should have spoken like Noel Gallagher not faux cockney like Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poopins
I prevents me from watching any Frasier episode that he is in.Which is a shame because he has good comic timing. But dude, that accents is truly terrible

Great Interview. Also though, who cares if the person is a great actor or not, it is their behavior we are talking about and not the performance. Sound like someone is avoiding. Just saying.

Nah, it's the other way around. The important thing is whether they are good at their job. Of course there is a lower limit, where being an asshole interferes with getting the job done. But is that really the case with, say, Bill Murrey?

Lapaglia can form a sentence unless it’s from a script. I’ve watched a couple interviews and at some point I can’t understand the 5 tangents he goes off on trying to tell one small story....there’s always other people involved (in his mind) that have nothing to do with the story itself but he has to name them all; but he can’t remember the order or who was there. He’s like a kid ordering ice cream for the first time by himself.
