I didn’t realize this podcast episode just came out until after I finished watching it while at the gym. I love starting my days with Daily Stoic and am happy I was able to catch this podcast. I had undiagnosed congenital heart defects and as an extremely healthy person with no known issues, I had a stroke at 40 out of the blue. I was fully conscious throughout and I KNEW I was dying because things got worse and worse. Memento Mori is weird for me and I think for anyone who has actually experienced this (vs not). I spent a lot of time oscillating between the miracle of being here and “screw it, I’m on bonus time”. His words are real and from actual EXPERIENCE. It’s been a struggle. Hearing from his actual experience vs others’ conjectures (as someone who HAS experienced almost dying) is so much more beneficial. I listen a lot more intently. He’s been there. Thank you.
Magnificent! Great, great job. So clear and so real and wonderful. The risk, the possibility of being cancelled in any moment makes me love life all the more and yet I'm ready to go should the circumstance arise. My children are grown and well, I've lived an interesting life. What else could or should I want? Nothing.
I am on the email it's helpful sometimes so I am grateful to you for sending it. I have really only discovered Stoicism in the last year at 55 years old. For a working class guy its inspiring.
I really loved Sebastian’s latest book, Freedom. It really opened my eyes to the barbarity and captivity that the so called civilised life brings to us.
I also particularly enjoyed Tribe, which brought to light a lot of the things that ailed me mentally at the time of reading and helped me make changes for the better.

No one is truly free if they are dependent upon and are integrated into society.
You'll watch an entire Netflix show even when the first episodes are slow and boring just because someone told you "it gets better." *But what if you looked at your goals like that and watched your life get better instead?*
Even if you manage to achieve financial independence, I agree that you are never completely free from certain rules and norms in society. But regardless of that, the most important thing is that you are free in your mind, thoughts, and spirit. Also, by maximizing your independence and being less dependent on others, you are also much freer. Working for others often sucks but if you have to, make sure it's worth your while. Don't just pick anything.

Amazing to hear such free thinkers talk about freedom FROM oppression and at the same time talk as if submitting to arbitrary government mandates would somehow help with covid
I couldn’t agree more that people misunderstand what is meant by freedom. However, the idea that a person not wearing a mask is infringing on somebody else’s freedom is a position built on a shaky foundation.
For one, I mean at this point I think it should be non controversial to say that masks are useless.
Two, the other person who is supposedly having his rights infringed upon still has complete freedom to maneuver in such a way as to protect him/herself from any danger knowing that some people will choose not to wear a mask. They can triple mask, get the vaccine, do all their shopping online, keep themselves far away from other people. Nobody is controlling by force how that person interfaces with the World to protect themselves and make their own risk assessments. Truly infringing on that person’s rights would be to force them, by the use of a gun, to interact with maskless people.
Now, I do agree with Sebastian that if your group decides that this is the law, you need to obey that law because this is your group. But, that doesn’t mean the law isn’t a load of bull shit and also according to this groups law, people have every right to speak up and say this law is bull shit.
I think the real issue that is being missed is the need to decentralize groups. The beauty of the USA is that sovereignty is divided and decentralized among many groups. Not only are group laws divided between the federal, state, and local governments, but a lot of group authority is also given to companies, hoa’s, and other voluntary associations/groups. This keeps competition between groups so that no single entity decides the rules.
The true issue and fear people feel about Covid restrictions is that it is transitioning America from decentralized group authorities to a single authority that decides group rules for all of America.
If you don’t see the danger of that and simple brush it off by saying that there is no such thing as complete freedom and all groups have rules, well then I’d have to say it’s a pretty silly understanding of what freedom is meant in the western context.

agreed!!! That whole Freedom bit with the Masks and Red-light scenario was completely Flawed!!! Apples to Oranges. This guy actively promotes group-think now, not critical Reasoning!
