Self etching primer is not outdated. Its how you use it.
Actually more productive than epoxy. Next video you mention this. On how to use self etching primer.
@@russlardinois5751 I go into this at 46:31 and hold up a sample of incompatibility and product failure, which I've experienced several times in my career, and in my ongoing training have been taught that the benefits of epoxy in most cases outweigh that of etch... Epoxy is catalyzed, alot of etches are singe-pack, non catalyzed, = reversible and thereby fragile and subject to solvent reactivation. I DO stand behind my commentary, but I agree that I should have been more clear. Yes, there are systems that use etch primer as a component of that system, but my point is that many OEM's steer away from acid etch primers as adhesion coats and recommend epoxy over etch My training reinforces this. HOWEVER........ I was guilty in this example of "blanket-stating" that epoxy is better, when the truth is that an "engineered system" needs to be followed, whether it contains epoxy or etch. My INTENT was to steer folks away from using " etch" under polyester, and steer them towards a safer and more compatible coating which would be epoxy. I always recommend staying within a system of chemistry, and NOT reaching for multiple manufacturers products and mixing them all together... that's a recipe for product failures.

In all my years painting I've never used polyester primer. Always used high quality primer surfacer.

Great show as always Kevin. I'm a TN neighbor (and subscriber) over in SW TN working out of my garage/workshop.
You answered part of a previous question I had asked you a while back on hard to paint areas with using the cavity wax. I can use that inside the doors and rockers. But I guess I need to send you a pic of the other area I need to paint.
I'll try and explain.
Picture a Henry steel 32 Ford 3 window coupe.
Now imagine painting all the easy places (like the fender in your video), straight on, layin' it down, plenty of room, no problem.
Now you get to the trunk drip rail. It needs to be the same color as the rest of the body. Getting down inside of each side is not so bad. But across the top, inside the drip rail, you can't get lined up on the side that faces the front of the car because the back window area is literally 3" away and no matter what angle I point the gun, (I even tried flipping the gun upside down) it hits the back of the top of the car. Even my little touch up gun won't get in there.
What I was thinking was to tape off everything but that area and just fog it in, best I can first thing, let it set, unmask and then paint the rest. If you want a pic, let me know how to send it to you.

If you're ever in the Memphis area (not likely, and I can't blame you), and have a few minutes, holler at me. I'm retired now so I'm almost always home. I'm just north of the city. Kevin, can you experiment with releasing your videos on Saturday afternoon or Sunday. On Friday VGG and a lot of his cohorts release their videos many of them being long so its hard to keep up. By later Saturday time is freed up and you won't get lost in the subscription list.
I'm trying to figure it out... I may try Saturday next week to see if it makes a difference. Thanks man!
Hey Kevin! I just wanted to stop by and say thank you for all that you do. I’m rewatching all of my favorite power block shows and you were such an excellent host. I have way to many project cars at the moment and I am so overwhelmed feeling like I will never be able to get them to where they should be but I am happy to see you thriving.

Thanks for answering my question! I was referring to doing Eastwood as a base to having my car wrapped in vinyl. There's a business close to me that quote me 2500 for doing the wrap. He said the most important thing was having a good base down. The vinyl won't hide imperfections. I want to do a much myself while building it. Mike c
Thanks for clarifying Mike.... Correct, a vinyl wrap won't hide a flawed surface, just like clear coat won't hide it. The roll on primer with good blocking techniques will work well through

Great tips I like them all I learn a lot from you and many other CZcams videos. Enough so I repaired my daily after hitting a buck and thought it was done.
I like the idea of roll on or brush on epoxy because I usually am doing small items and parts. I just don't want to set up the guns, clean em etc when I have something that can sit in my lap.
Kevin, love the channel! Its great that you teach people to do this. I just got here by chance but I am a visual learner with a little experience thrown in. I suspect you have a lot of knowledge in that little cap rack of yours! 😂

First watched the episode on VGG, (=Instant subscriber) This was an awesome Q&A, you covered some vehicle fiberglass which is way easier than boat repair !, your expert tips (just from this episode) will help greatly with the repair on both my fiberglass camper & paint prep on my old 88" Landrover...... now what do I use the cans of etch primer for?? sadly U.S.A brand products are not always readily available over here in the U.K. Thankyou for passing on hard learned Knowledge!
I really enjoy learning about paint and body work and this channel has been teaching me things I wouldnt have ever known about. And I have been wanting to do some paint and body work myself and watching some of this stuff has gave me some awesome information. With that being said I have a 1990 Chevy k1500 that has the typical paint peel that some of the primer is gone on top of the cab and paint is missing everywhere on the pickup. I have bought a harbor freight electric dual action sander for rough up some of the paint and primer i attempted to seal off the top of the cab a few years ago and has done ok so far. Eventually I would like to paint it myself. I do have a few friends who do painting for a living, one guy who has done it for 30 plus years and does it out of his own shop for his living and two who have been doing it for a few years who used to paint boats and are now doing cars. One friend does collision repair primer and paint not so much the body work side and not 100% aure on the 3rd guy. But the guy who has been doing it for 30 plus years said with the primer being exposed to the elements for so long the primer is now compromised and the whole pickup would need to be stripped down to bare metal and then reprimed and brought back into new primer to have a better primer surface for the paint to adhere to. Other friend who works in a collision shop has never mentioned anything about the primer issue to me but have spoke to both about Eventually helping me paint it and I am trying to figure out in which direction i need to go to make a paint job last. Granted this pickup is still gonna be used to go out into the woods and see dirt roads and winter driving. Ive thought about just doing the raptor liner paint job, thought about doing the bottom portion in the raptor liner as well and have thought about just doing the whole pickup done with all paint. Any help with which way would be a good way to go on this would be great. Ive got mixed information on which way to go and have not really found much information out there on which way would be the proper way to go for painting. Also if i do have to stip all the paint and primer or just the paint what wpuld be the best and quickest way to prep everything sand paper aircraft striper etc. Thanks in Advance

Hi Kevin, I am really enjoying your content. Watching from Australia and so many 90's & 2000's vehicles over here suffer from clear coat flake. Is it possible to remove the clear coat, revive the paint and respray the clear coat? I would love to hear your recommendation or better still, see a video dealing with this. Thanks

I have a question for next round. My 66 Galaxie was color changed from brown to red and the paint job was fresh when I purchased the car. I am now finding cracks in the paint and what appears to be rust bubbles. Two part question, is the spider web cracking from dislike materials? As time passes there are more and more spider web cracks. Second question, am I at a point that I just need to sand the car to metal? I am wanting to do this myself and move past being a rattlecan paint pro 😂.

A question I haven't seen yet is how do you know if your car has a water based with a clear coat paint or a traditional solvent or lacquer based paint job? Will the paint code on the door sticker tell only the color so it can be matched or will it also tell the type of base?
I need to replace cab corners, rockers, floor pans and front cab mounts on a 79 c10. What order should I replace the parts in? And what should I coat the panels with to protect them long term - before a paint job.

Hey Kevin I’m not intimidated when urethane paint (single stage) is fully cured will it be hard as a rock or can you pick a nick in it with say your finger nail? Can base clear be applied over cured single stage urethane? Thanks I’ve experienced some edge crinkling with my new base over single stage wondering what’s going on!

See you touched on fine line tape and seam sealer- perhaps you might consider making a video of your process for both. I’m all over the place with fine line as far as to what I use and when and I’m always looking for tips on seam sealer. Thanks.
