The one thing I notice when most people listen to The Beatles is that it makes them so happy. It's like music to lift ones spirits because of the themes, how well it's written, and how well it's made. You know right away you are in good hands. And they can sometimes be so funny, like with Piggies being about corrupt police officers and Back in the U.S.S.R. being an absurdist take on a Beach Boys song set in a place where the sun barely shines and it's super cold most of the year.

Fun Fact: In the songs Back In the U.S.S.R and Dear Prudence, Paul McCartney was on drums. The reason why Ringo wasn’t on drums for those 2 songs is because he was mad and left for a little bit. When he came back to record more songs with the Beatles, there were flowers on his drum-set for his return

When I saw Paul in concert some time ago, he said he was watching "the telly" (TV) & saw a black bird (bird is slang for girl in the UK) getting hit by cops during the Civil Rights movement. After it passed, he wrote Blackbird, "take these broken wings & fly." Btw, The Beatles were the 1st rock/pop band to refuse to play to a segregated audience when the came to tour in the USA. It made it easier for others to do the same. They toured with people like Little Richard who taught Paul that Rock scream in the UK before they became big & loved Chuck Berry, etc. So they didn't understand racism at all.

This is a really hard album to react to. In a way, the album was made to be the anti-Beatle album. Part of its charm is that it's not like a "normal" Beatles album. So there's a weird lo-fi feel to the production. It's got a lot of silliness. It's such a weird Beatles album which makes it even more of a "Beatles" album.

Between recording these songs there was a LOAD of stuff going on with the band, stuff that was beginning to tear the band apart. Ringo Starr even left the band for a period because he felt that he was being minimalized by his mates, and George Harrison was feeling the same. Also, Yoko Ono's presence was being felt, and she was getting involved in some of these songs. She even gets recorded in "The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill" as Bill's "mom." Her voice is also heard in "Revolution 9."

So fun watching You hear this music for the first time . Your attitude towards the music and perspective is awesome . I’ve heard this album my entire life . I was born in 68 my older sister loved the Beatles then and I still love them now . Engrained I’m my subconscious mind and embedded into my soul . Pink Floyd is a whole other story . So great to hear you love and respect music from the 60’s 70’s . Just feel it . Live it. Thanks for the enjoyment of living vicariously thru you for a few hours . One Love

I really appreciate that you check out some info about the album that you're gonna listen to. Info such as what year it was released and its place in the discography.
Your attention to the 'feel' of the late sixties struck me. You want to understand what the atmosphere to the times was, and I respect that much.
I lived through the 60s and you are on the right track. Keep exploring and taking us on the ride. I like your channel and reactions. Subscribed.

Back in the USSR was a nod to the Beach Boys, good comment on calling it a beach song.
Julia was John's mother's name, she was killed in a road accident when he was a teenager. Yoko means "ocean child" in Japanese.

Very good reaction to the white album. I enjoyed it very much the album has grown on me over time. Even the so called filler songs I enjoy mainly because of the track listing run. Very well thought mix. My fav songs on side 1 and 2 are happiness is a warm gun a and Julia' totally amazing song. Can't believe someone can write a song so good. Looking forward to the remainder of your review. Personally I think the white album is very good album e

Lennon at times wrote "nonsense" -- wordplay -- in part because he'd been doing that since childhood, and in part for fans who liked to figure things out.

'Dear Prudence' is about Prudence Farrow -- Mia Farrow's sister who was in India with them in '68. Mia Farrow starred in Rosemary's baby in '68, which was set/filmed in the Dakota Hotel, NY, where John was murdered. The closing scene of that film has the camera going upwards into the sky from the entranceway -- representing Lennon's soul ascending after death. (There are other strange connections too, including the Charles Manson murders and 'Helter Skelter'..)

I don't know how you came to that conclusion - since the film predates Lennon's murder by over a decade.

The Beatles were putting out so many songs that most were never released as singles (which was the way things were done in the 60's). So, Ob La De Ob La Da was recorded and released by another group, The Marmalade who took it to number one in the charts. Meaning that big list of number ones the Beatles had, missed this song.

On this page Alani447a brought up the subject of the vinyl format - in the case of the White Album I personally would always advise reactors to listen to each of the four sides as a piece (and thus as a "talking point"). After all there's a reason why - just like on Pepper and Abbey Road - the vinyl was originally "unbanded" making it very difficult to pick out individual tracks
Taking into account all the "other" songs from 1968, you could say there's a phantom "third disc of the White Album" to be constructed. Revolution (the single version), Sour MIlk Sea, Child Of Nature, Circles, Junk, What's The New Mary Jane c/w Not Guilty, The Inner Light, Lady Madonna, Hey Jude

In Steven Tyler's (lead of Aerosmith) biography he says he and a friend ran in to John Lennon once and were allowed one question. The friends asked John what the meaning was behind the opening lyric of Happiness is a Warm Gun. John's answer was "it just sounded good coming out my mouth." I love that. So much obsession on the meaning behind their music and sometimes it just was a fire verse.

While My Guitar Gently Weeps is the most iconic song on this album. It's the song from this album that we still hear played a lot. This was George Harrison's first masterpiece. Within You Without You was the first very good Harrison song, on Sgt Pepper, but Guitar Gently Weeps is George's first, but not last, masterpiece. As you move to Abbey Road and Let It Be albums, you will hear more of George's masterpieces. I think of White album, Abbey Road and Let It Be as the late and last period of the Beatles. One feature of this period is that George comes into his own as a songwriter. These are my opinions of course.
