  • We purchased a roof top tent! The 23 Zero Panther 1600 hard top roof top tent was our first experience with a tent of this type. We took it on a roughly 10000km round trip and used it most of the time over a month long holiday. What did we think of it. Watch our video to see.

I came up with the idea to put it on a sliding rack and it was my clever husbands innovation to come up with the design and how to make it work. Which he did very well and it works fantastically and a 6 panel 270 Howling moon awning fits well. How can we send you photos to show it?

Im looking into these. My approach is to try and mount with the backbone without the flat rack. See how we go. Will save 40 kg

You can shut out the light pretty well but in colder climates you’ll want to have windows open to reduce condensation. We just got one of the egg shell style toppers. I can’t remember now whether it was a double or queen but just check the original mattress for dimensions. Cheers mate

      Thanks for the vid .
I’m looking for something like this . However as you said it’s a pain in the arse having to add a topper .
Is there anything out there similar that comes with a quality mattress.
How was it in the wind ?
I had one of those original style rooftop tents and in the wind was like sleeping in plastic bag . Was noisy and flapping .
      Cheers

@@jasonthatcher9755 I’ve got another mattress coming from 23 Zero so it should be interesting to see if it’s any better. It seems that unless you’re willing to spend big bucks for something more spacious and can carry all the bedding, the standard issue mattresses all seem below par.

I’m tossing my up on getting this model but I’m stuck on that bloody mattress. It really is not great. And there seems not enough room to add anymore layers. I’d be interested to hear how you went with replacing it.

It seems that many of the RTTs come with bloody hard mattresses. I don’t know why they can’t get this simple aspect right. Anyway, over the warmer months I haven’t bothered with it but they did supply another mattress after I complained but I suspect it is the same one anyway. I’ll be fitting over the next couple of months as we have a trip away in June. If it doesn’t work I may make a substitute out of memory foam and a softer foam. I found putting in/taking out a topper every day was annoying. Not a lot of space at pack up, I was able to leave sleeping bag and small pillows in but a topper wouldn’t fit.

@@TravelOutbackOz I am keen to see how you have progressed with the mattress. I just fitted the Panther2000 and the mattress is horrible.
