Build an awesome High Rise - Model Scenery Tutorial

- If you’ve ever wanted to build an ultra-realistic high rise apartment building then this video is for you! I can’t imagine there’d be many people with such a desire… unless of course you’re a real estate mogul or a model railroader!
For more photos and information on this model as well as links to a lot of the 3D items used on this model you will find them here:
www.bouldercreekrailroad.com/...
I purchased this model from Custom Model Railroads in the US and I spent a good month putting it together.
It’s laser cut acrylic so all the part fit very precisely and there was very minimal sanding or gap filling required. The model is HO scale but the techniques I used to construct the model could easily be applied to just about any other scale.
A model building like this would look awesome on a model railroad although it will need a few friends beside it to make it blend in a little better and not look so lonely 😉 It’s only a 20 story building but in person it looks surprisingly big! Just imagine what a 90 or 100 story building would look like in HO scale!
The kit isn’t cheap but it sure looks good once it has been assembled and adding extra details just takes it to a whole new level. If you’re wanting to try building with acrylic and do know where to start I can definitely recommend the CMR kits. - Zábava
"Furniture won't be visible, so I won't paint them in too much detail".
Paints in the most amazing detail, like books and bedsheets of different colors.
lol... yeah I guess I did spend a bit of time painting in the details 😊
@@LukeTowan but why? you did all the work to only cover it with some curtains.. i don't understand it
@@ZZidaneRM10 He only used the curtains where rooms weren't detailed.
@@ZZidaneRM10 True craftsman do details because they know they will be there even if its never seen.
@@ZZidaneRM10 then you both never build model kit, for example if you build tamiya truck model scale, there is super detail engine under the hood, and its not visible either.
You're like the Bob Ross of Model Scenery. You even have a calming voice.
ha ha thanks so much Lilly for the awesome compliment 😃
@@LukeTowan I have zero interest in scale modelling but I love watching your videos.
A passionate narrator can make their topic really stand out and what you create is truly remarkable. Most would be satisfied to build a kit as instructed but you go beyond that, adding your own details.
Keep up the awesome work.
@@LukeTowan beautiful building
@@LukeTowan Yeah. I'll never build a diorama or model, but my goodness are these videos entertaining.
So trueeeeee

I was thinking exactly the same, wll said ;)
Glad to see this guy is actually a human and not an android and misses putting the USB in on the first try like the rest of us at 7:52
I reckon Luke did that deliberately so we all feel a little better about ourselves

I would have a hard time figuring out the math for making buildings for my gunpla. I would love to do stuff like this!
That's beautiful. How you managed to cut this video down to 20 minutes I do not know
ha ha yeah I reckon it could easily have been an hour long video if I wanted. I try to make them between 20 and 30 minutes. I'm really happy you liked the result 😉

when he started making rooms: *h o l y s h i t*
Exactly what I thought.. Pleasantly surprised, I gotta admit ;)
Having followed him since almost the beginning, it's never as simple as a kit. He always go waaaaay past what the kit provides. He's the best model maker/railroad hobbyist on CZcams.
Yeah. That was the words that came up lol
It was like:
- it's just an assembly kit... I can do that too!
-he is making rooms inside the building!....... Damn!, I can't do that!!!

I’d love to see a modern skyscraper like the Sears tower. Most cities are a mix of the old Art Deco and the more contemporary styles after all.
Maybe next time. Maybe scratch-build Sky City!
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sky_City_1000
Oh yeah I'd love to attempt a building like that!
Luke Towan, I’m thinking of how you could make the building visually interesting since it is just a big glass slab after all. Thoughts include:
- Glass lookout box like the Sears Tower
- Blinking red lights at the tip of the communications antennas which will inevitably be put on top
- Helicopter landing pad, with appropriate blinking lights and helicopter with spinning rotors
- Plaza at entrance of building, with manicured trees, flower boxes, a water feature/splash pad (with dog playing in water jets), flicks of pigeons, street musician, food truck?
- Window washer platform dangling off the side
You could cram so much stuff into this one!
@@LukeTowan This building looks a bit like The Century on Central Park West, albeit one tower vs 2.
@@doubledarefan Sky City in HO scale would be 11.5 meters tall, or 38.3ft! Can you even imagine?
Luke, tell the truth mate you just wanted to get in on the housing shortage for inch tall people didn't ya!... 🙃☮️

The time this man puts into the detail of his models speaks volumes. His touch breathes so much life into these models.

Model New York City skyline coming soon?
Imo, the mix between the ambient led's and detailed room led's looks alot more realistic from a modern standpoint. Not everyone buys the same type of lightbulb so it makes it seem as if there's a mix between incandecent and cfl bulbs in each unit. Mixed with your tape idea it would be very believable.
yeah that is very true, I did think about leaving it as it was but in the end I made them to be a similar color. But yeah for a more modern building the variation would probably be good... heck, I've got two different colored bulbs in our lounge room! One in each light fixture...
agreed, for residential use.
This was my sentiment exactly... Varying the lighting color hue does, indeed, make for far more convincing lighting. I wonder how much of a pain in the posterior a flickering fluorescent effect might be from a hallway or service entrance, etc... Just a stray thought, mind you. lol :)
Wow I can't believe my eyes. You created small world.
I'd love to shrink down and stand on one of the balconies, I'm glad you enjoyed the video 😃
I just put an Asian accent to your comment...
the hidden led light switch & the uncontrolled green plant growth says it all . Amazing work ethic great artist ... furniture 22 rooms & the pipes omg. 3d printer rules

@Castle Bravo sometimes people watch videos to pass time, and watch videos of stuff they have no interest in doing. why do you feel the need to try and make it seem like OP is lying/illogical over such a simple comment?
@Castle Bravo you might wanna try that first, given your attempt to make a mountain out of a molehill.

"Here's my attempt in painting the world's smallest eyes."
Well, thanks, mate. Now I have tea coming out my nose
lol... I really need to find a better way of painting tiny faces!
@@LukeTowan You might look into brushes used in (finger) nail art. There are super-fine ones used for striping and tiny detail work. A lot of doll customizers use them for super fine details like eyelashes. Thanks for another great video!
I chuckled when you mentioned saving sanity, I must admit. You might see if you can find a Model Railroader article I recall from back in the {cough} 1980's from an author that went to great lengths painting figures, including detailed eyes, etc. I simply have to draw a line at some point and say, "Good enough..." Unless it's something I'd like to photograph closely, then I'm equally OC. lol
Beautiful work!
Incredible! Would love to see you do something more mystical, like a creepy castle or a magic forest.
Great suggestion! I have wanted to do something like that for a while 😃
This is an amazing model you have made! I have been watching our videos for years now, and you never cease to amaze me. I am currently building a model railroad and our guides are what I turn to for all of my scenery! thank you for all of your amazing videos!
I’m guilty for doing this, but I always come back whenever I have insomnia. There’s something about your voice, similarly to Bob Ross that also soothes my insomnia, that just make me fall asleep easier.
The level of detail on a big scale is amazing. Can't wait for a similar project. Maybe do a busy hospital to honour all the medical staff during covid 19 and auction it. Could make a pretty penny and add to your profile.

I should set up a bit of a display 😃
@@LukeTowan Please. That would be a sight to see.

Halo orang Indonesia
You clearly do
Filming and editing the whole process must've taken a lot of effort, let alone building the actual model. Thanks Luke, really enjoyed this one. Stellar job!
Beautiful craftsmanship. You took what was already a nice kit and turned it into something special. What a pleasure it was to see the final product!
Really beautiful model thanks to all the extra work you did. Painting every single piece of furniture with different colors, making carpets and posters and wall pictures, glueing all that in every room...requires tons of patience. The LED installation and choice of dim over bright light is another good idea. Very well done. Congratulations.
This is honestly insane. You've reached PLASMO or even Ebroin levels of detail work with this one, Luke!
Luke is no doubt a fantastic model and scenery builder, as well as an excellent presenter. Love all his videos, sorry but he's not on the level of PLASMO. Maybe if Luke ventures into military modeling someday, he'll prove me wrong. It's a great accolade to apply to Luke, but not fitting. Two different levels of talent here.
@@WHJeffB Well if we're splitting hairs I'd say their craft is different enough that neither is better or worse.
Ebroin on the other hand is on a WHOLE OTHER level I think we can agree 😉
@@Jesse__H Fair enough...
@@Jesse__H Nah, don't get me wrong, Luke is amazing, but Plasmo is so much better. This build didn't take much skill, just time, most modellers could do it. Plasmo's work is pure skill and talent, most people will never reach that level.

Oh nice, that's good to hear 😃 I often get messages from people who just like watching the process, I'm glad you like it.
truly astounding, adding the 3d printed parts and room detail is where it goes from excellent to godlike. You are a master craftsman. .
There is no much to talk about it, but patience is a secret ingredient to make fantastic masterpeace.
After 2 years AGAIN watching this incredible diorama ❤
Blimey, the patience you must have to do this project, I can imagine it would get on to peoples nerves to have a repeating progress that repeats on and on till you're at the top level of the construction.
Hats off though, this looks super sweet, almost too real with the outside shots.
Now all you need is a underground parking garage diorama and you got it set. 👍🏻
lol yeah that was the hardest part about building this... all the repeated steps! I think taking photos of any scale model outside makes a huge difference to the realistic look, I think it has to do with the shadows and color of the natural light 😉
Luke Towan certainly does, again, great job Luke! Love the things you build and put together!
A good tip when working with WeldOn #3 and a needle tip bottle is, when upright, squeeze some air out of the bottle. That way when applying the solvent, when you release the bottle you draw in air. It helps to avoid little squirts, like what happens at 3:10 This is helpful to 1) avoid spills and 2) because if you're gluing clear acrylic, those random splashes will cause white spots.
Amazing. The skills,... the tools,.... the craftmanship, ... but most of all; ... the patience!
ОБОЖАЮ ТАКИЕ ИЗДЕЛИЯ!!! МОЛОДЦЫ!!!
This is simply outstanding, you can't imagine how relaxing is watching this

I have no words to describe how you make all things comes to live in all you do. Amazing to watch how you do all things, like Bob Ross with his painting, so easy when you know how. Luke, welly done!!! 👍 your calm and patience character will give you loooooooooong life.
That was expensive and immensely time consuming, but the end result is simply amazing!! Well done Luke!!
Here’s a quick tip: when using the applicator bottle, fill it 3/4 full and squeeze the bottle to remove the air. Then, tip the bottle over and slowly unsqueeze the bottle as you run it along the glue joint. This prevents the glue from flowing out too quickly and getting everywhere!
You are without a doubt an ARTIST !!!! Greetings from Denmark !

Very well done, Luke! I love that you detailed the room interiors! Besides people, furnishing the interior also adds a touch of realism and life! Here's a tip for creating 'eyes' on figures ... simply use a well-sharpened color pencil, and just create colored dots for eyes ... brown, blue, green, even black works well. Looks pretty darn convincing for HO scale people!
