I wish Adobe would further improve and simplify their organizational aspects of this app! I totally appreciate what you have shown here, but it just shows how poorly this app has been planned out! It’s supposedly an organizational tool, but it’s quite disorganized. Alas, I have sunk too many hours in Lr, so I continue banging my head and saving all the wonderful tips you provide! Thank god for J Kost!

Great tip to put the catalogue into the folder of the photos. I didn’t think to do that. Thanks!

Thank you - good explanation. I have done a similar process in the past, but not quite as elegantly. What I need now is a similar process using an iPad with Lightroom for travel - including a clean and safe way of deleting the originals that end up in the cloud without the fear of deleting them from my Lightroom Classic setup. I know that I should be using Lightroom (the cloud version), but the cost of online storage precludes that. I have been taking photographs for 70+ years and have done a lot of scanning, so I have over 240K images. Editing them down to a manageable number is not an option 😞

Thank you. A few steps involved. I hope that in the future, Adobe can make it even more simple. I prefer to have multiple catalogs because I have dozens of Hard drives with their respective backups and it is always a fight with the windows drive letters so I have to reconnect and with one catalog a jump in letters might be a lot of work to reconnect all the drives. With one catalog per subject you have to reconnect 1 or 2 hard drives letters at most, so for me I avoid merging different catalogs and I rather maintain everything separated by subjects. Also, a corruption is much less dangerous that having everything in a single catalog.

For those of us who like to assign keywords while on the road, and the words are fresh in our mind, what is the best way to include the entire existing hierarchy of keywords in our main Lightroom library to use in the new library we create to use on the road. Quite often I am adding new keywords while out and about. I would like to incorporate those back into the hierarchy of my main library as well.

Would this process work with my laptop being my only machine? Photos are stored on an external drive that stays at home when I travel. Could I then import into a new catalog on the laptop while traveling then merge the “travel” catalog with the “master” catalog when I get home?
