    Departing Oshkosh can be scary... Lots of airplane coming in and out in very close proximity. But perhaps the most terrifying part is the fact that some pilots just don't follow the procedures, and may not be where you think they are. Also, how about that Cherokee that almost plowed into our line of airplanes?! GO AROUND DUDE!

    • @GaryMCurran
      @GaryMCurran Před 7 lety +10

      What was the deal with that Cherokee, anyway? I thought he was a departing aircraft just wing rocking on his way out. I had to go back and look and see if he was after the Dassault, but he was before that. Pulling that kind of stunt at AirVenture is a good way to have an immediate visit by the FAA. I rather suspect the reason he was sitting in the grass was he was sitting there shaking too badly to move. We may never know what happened, but there's a pilot who needs some more dual time! Either that or someone who is no longer capable of flying.

    • @gevmage
      @gevmage Před 7 lety +4

      Yeah, the Cherokee was scary.
      I hadn't thought about the aspect of it being critical what you do AFTER you leave the delta after departing. I've only flown and airplane to airventure once, and I departed IFR at 06:30, so I immediately went above all the other traffic and I didn't have to worry about it.
      Thanks for the video; this was great!

      He may have forgot to turn off his after burners

    • @GaryMCurran
      @GaryMCurran Před 7 lety +5

      Jason replied below that he was too high and too fast on final, and I'm guessing that was his way of trying to slip the airplane in. Clearly, he needed to go around and start over again. This is one of those 'life lessons' about 'get-there-itis.' It's no fun to arrive at your airport if they have to take you away in an ambulance.
      The old saw about 'having to change his flight suit' upon return from a scary mission or encounter may apply here as well, when he was finally on the ground.

    • @ryandibble8674
      @ryandibble8674 Před 7 lety +7

      Missed opportunity for clickbait, Josh -- you should change the thumbnail to a picture of that plane getting dangerously close and add the title, "CRAZY PILOT NEARLY CRASHES ON TAXIWAY," or "CRASH AVOIDED WITH THIS ONE WEIRD TRICK!" Then you'd have had 250,000 views by now.
      Just kidding around. Great video; glad to see it was a great time out there. I hope to make it out next year.

    SERIOUSLY ? What the hell was up with that psycho in the Cherokee ?? I really looked like he was out of control and may flip it, or hit someone. I realize that Oshkosh has pilots of every possible skill level, but didn't expect the Mad Baron to swoop in over the runway, attempting close proximity, low level aerobatics, during a full slip and partial stall, all while experimenting with various seat adjustments and power settings, cycling the flaps, rocking the ailerons, kicking at a beer can stuck under the rudder pedal and folding a chart, all while waving out the passenger side window, to what he's convinced himself is a large crowd of awe-stricken pilots and onlookers, who have assembled to witness his aviation prowess in person. And this was his landing !

    • @jamescarroll6954
      @jamescarroll6954 Před 5 lety +1

    Dear MrAviation101, I must really congratulate you on an excellent 3 part video regarding Oshkosh. I always enjoy your videos but this production is really good! Also the script and narration, I can only complement you on that. I have never been to Oshkosh, (still on my bucket list), so you can imagine how much more I enjoyed watching it from here. Your sharing and partnership with your dad is also very commendable! Keep it up!

    Hi, Josh. I'm a new subscriber, but probably the same age as your dad. I subscribed 2 days ago, beginning with some of your newest (2022) videos and then saw this series and just binge-watched all of your OSH videos. Your cinematic skills are 1st Class and your delivery is clear, concise and very thought-full and informative. I'm one of four sons (the youngest) of a Marine Aviator. He was a Major and flew the McDonnell Douglas A-4E Skyhawk (a little more performance than your Skyhawk!) and sadly, he was killed in 1966 over in the Phillipines while he was training for his upcoming missions for the Vietnam War. Out of us four boys, I was the only one to take an interest in flying and got my license back in 1985. It was so much fun and I especially loved solo flight. My instructor was also a cropduster and he taught me well on emergency procedures and I was such an 'instinctive' pilot, I solo'd at just a little over 5 hours. I quickly transitioned from a C-172 to spending most of my solo hours in a taildragger 140. I caught on to that quickly and preferred the little taildragger over the trike. Long story, long - I haven't flown now in a few years and it looks to be over. My kids are grown and raising their own families in all corners of our country and my wife and I are retired. I just wanted to share a little bit on how I stumbled onto and very much appreciate your videos. My dad died when I was almost 4 yrs. old. I see you and your dad and wonder how much we both would have enjoyed flying into OSH and how different things could have been. Your Chelsea is an angel and you have a wonderful future! Best of all good things young man!

      I’ve been flying a cherokee 180 for 15 years. It’s probably one of the easiest and most forgiving airplanes to fly. You almost have to TRY to fly it that badly. Yeesh.

    • @Heathfx5
      @Heathfx5 Před 2 lety

      @@AV8R_1 I had to fly a cherokee once during my ppl training instead of the 172 I normally flew, first time ever being in a piper. It was a piece of cake to fly, just as sweet and well-mannered as the 172! How anyone can mess up that badly boggles my mind, I was certain we were about to witness a crash!

  • @challenger2ultralightadventure

    Wow! Departures from Oshkosh is no place for a pilot who is indecisive, or hesitates and is unsure of themselves. I would love to one day fly into and out of Oshkosh during the gathering, it's on my bucket list.

    Another great video! You two remind me of my son and I enjoying our Tiger at the great OSH. And it's no wonder my son and I couldn't find you and your dad at OSH... you both left on Thursday. We didn't arrive until the morning of Friday the 28th. We landed on 36R, the taxiway made into a the temporary makeshift runway and, like you and your dad just did, we took off on 27 when we left that Sunday afternoon. It's amazing how out of the chaos that goes on at OSH, how smoothly everything operates for getting aircraft in and out of that place. Hope to see you and your dad at either the AOPA fly-in at Norman, OK this September or at some other event. Happy and safe flying.

    I can never understand the talk via the radio, it goes so fast. is it difficult to hear because we hear it via youtube and is it better if you are sitting in the plane? or is it just a lot of practise and you can speak the 'radio language' (im not a pilot).

    • @190Michael190
      @190Michael190 Před 7 lety

      Made the turn to final way too high and fast, and overshot the turn to final. Should have gone-around, but I guess they didn't have a go-around in the mind as an option.

      Thanks for that, Josh. I guess those antics were attempts at a slip then. Like I said in another reply, doing that at AirVenture may very well get you a visit from the FAA, but either way, the pilot needs a little more dual!
