ACTION IN THE OSHKOSH AIRVENTURE TOWER - ONE OF THE BUSIEST IN THE WORLD

  • From July 24 through 31, 2022, FAA air traffic controllers will help more than 17,000 planes safely fly in and out of Oshkosh’s Wittman Regional Airport for the Experimental Aircraft Association’s annual AirVenture aviation experience. The fly-in will attract more than 600,000 pilots and aircraft enthusiasts to the northern Wisconsin town. Just listen to the bustling radio communications as FAA controllers talk with pilots and each other to safely move huge numbers of airplanes through the airspace around Oshkosh. The familiar call from controllers to pilots: “Rock your wings” is an Oshkosh staple, allowing controllers to positively identify aircraft they are communicating with.
    So how does Oshkosh tower stack up against the big airports during EAA AirVenture? Oshkosh truly was the busiest control tower in the world over three days last year and was the second busiest airport during the entire AirVenture, according to statistics from the FAA.

    The Oshkosh flight totals are even more impressive because its traffic count covers only 10 hours of daily activity, while the major airports are open 24 hours. The Oshkosh airport closes after dark and the tower is closed for four hours in the afternoon for the daily air show. Once again this year, the FAA expects the Oshkosh tower to be one of the busiest in the world.

    I flew a Taylorcraft into Oshkosh in 1985, got to the end of the runway and they tell me to hit the numbers, so I slipped it to a landing and look up to see a bonanza going over the top of me so close I could read the placards on the landing gear, best time in aviation I ever had.

      @Greg Davis tower is 118.5 but it could be different during eaa because im sure they have approach controllers as well but foreflight doesnt list the frequency
      edit: Just looked it up, the northwest arrival is 126.8, northeast 120.55, southeast 127.87 (at or below 2000 feet), south-southwest 119.35, southwest 133.5. (All the frequencies are for aircraft at or below 5000 feet). If im 100% correct, the approach freq is 120.7 and its called the "Fisk" approach for runway 9-27. Another thing I found interesting is they have certain aircraft land at different spots on runway 27, RWY 27 landing distances |Displaced Threshold 5,647’| |Orange Dot 4,600’| |Green Dot 3,100’| according to FAA.

    I love how the STOL bush plane @1:06 with big bush tires takes the time to turn backwards on the runway and make for the paved taxiway, while everyone else with "normal" airplanes go right into the grass.

      Dunno but a un announced backtaxi is fecking dangerous with 3 aircraft touching down at the same time. What the hell was the PIC thinking.. just keep rolling forward and that landing was like a day 2 student being told “your controls” at 100ft above on final

    I had the pleasure to be controlled by some of those controllers during the Simventure virtual Oshkosh that took place 2 weeks ago on the PilotEdge network (flight sim). That was exactly the same notice and procedures so a good training for people going to Oshkosh for real. They are awesome and doing a fantastic job!

      There's a lot of videos on here about the Fisk arrival. I think the ATC handling for it is more insane because they are handling ALL the inbound traffic. The tower teams are handling roughly half of that because Fisk is where they are directed to one runway or the other.

      I didn't either - I thought it was all handled from the KOSH tower - it DOES make sense now! See you there? I will be hanging around Mike Patey's Scrappy for sure - if he is flying it in this year - I missed seeing Draco. Happy and safe flying

    These gals and guys are amazing - its VERY good to actually see the approach from the other end of the binoculars. They truly ARE amazing. I'm doing a cross country this year KRNT to KOSH ....EAA '23 or bust! and its good to know I will be in such amazing hands. This is my first time flying into KOSH.

    It probably sucks to be a regular controller at OSH and Airventure comes up and they say you can stay at home while we bring in these hot-shot controllers who aren't even certified at your facility, because you can't handle the load.

    Ooh fun fact: I worked at EAA for two summers in the early 2000s. The main control tower at the airport does not (or at least, did not at the time) conduct ATC operations. That was dnoe in a small shack a couple miles away from the airport.

    Lol I remember listening to the North Tower ATC guy (the one dude who is closest to the recording camera here) have to keep telling the rv over the highway to start its descent, and eventually had to come back to it after it didnt listen

      Well I know that a lot of times they repeat even if it was acknowledged here. I flew into Simventure (the real controllers on a virtual network) and I was cleared to land multiple times despite the fact I was doing the right things

      And sometimes in this audio you may be hearing a spotter telling the controller, who repeats the message to the pilot. Quite an operation. The have several levels of Oshkosh experience at work on each team in the tower.

    Flying into Airventure is always demanding and the action is even more demanding than it appears as we are on our best behavior. This is one time where screwing the pooch is NOT an option.

      Yeah the runway is sectioned off to land I believe 4 at a time

      By using same runway separation rules (with a waiver at times), they can alter the aiming point for the pilots by telling them on which part of the runway to land. The dots (or squares) farther down the runway keeps the first aircraft’s speed up longer while the dots/square near the beginning of the runway slows the back airplane down sooner.

      ATC here, worked the show a long time ago. The dots, are 1500ft apart, reduced from the 3000ft rule for two small aircraft for the airshow. Still only supposed to be 1 aircraft on the runway (landing) at a time, thus the constant turn into the grass command because the next aircraft is close behind on the dot behind him/her.
