Is Tesla FSD Faked?! I respond to Business Insider by self-driving to random coordinates for 95 mins

  • Recently their have been allegations by morons in the media that Tesla FSD is faked and only works on certain routes. I share my response, debunking the claims by having FSD drive to random points on the map for 95 minutes, creating a series of routes that it has never driven before.
    I tried to drive for as long as I could before getting a safety critical intervention, but after 95 minutes I just got tired and went home. The software is getting extremely good. Tesla bulls and bears alike are completely in the dark about how good the software you can run on any Tesla today is getting. It is starting to feel like a Robotaxi-like experience.

    I'm 73, not an influencer, no YT channel. I have a 2024 Model 3 just like in this video, except black interior. My drives using FSD 12.4.3 are almost unbelievable. Smooth, safe and uneventful. My only disengagements are at the end of the route to get to the parking space I want quickly. I'm in the Midwest, not near any of Teslas most active areas like San Francisco and Austin, so fewer training clips from here.

    I am past 50 years old, I am grumpy and stubborn. I bought a M3 Highland despite missing blinker stalks, I gave Tesla the benefit of a doubt that they actually had thought it through removing the stalks. And I complained about it after taking delivery of the car. But the funny thing is, it has now been 14 days since I drove my old 2013 Ford Focus and it is now awkward to drive with stalks. I am searching for the blinker buttons on the steering wheel, but the Ford doesn't have any. So as old and grumpy I am, I hereby admit I was wrong. Blinker buttons work, even in round abouts. Just give it 2-3 weeks to relearn the muscle memory. I actually prefer the blinker buttons now, doesn't have to take my hand of the steering wheel. So my gamble on Tesla is a win. The Model 3 Highland is a brilliant car and I love it, I truly do. But sometimes it does things that make me, not love it. The crash avoidance system is to aggressive, we have narrower roads in Sweden, often with worn out road markings. And meeting a long hauler with trailer at 85 km/h swooshing by with only 1 meter distance between the vehicles, makes the Tesla freak out, it thinks it is about to crash, avoiding the long hauler with trailer, stomping on the breaks going BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!
    The other day I got an OTA software update, I think they removed the warning beeps. Thank you Tesla. The car still occasionally stomps on the brakes, but at least I don't get panic. I think Tesla are driving around collecting data on all roads in Sweden so they can tweak the software adjusting it for our road conditions.
    Can't wait until they release FSD and Autopilot stop relying on our national road database.

      @07BSPtC Před 25 dny

      Only thing I hate about no stalks is there are a couple back to back turns an example I turn left and then immediately right into a driveway and it is near impossible to switch to the right blinker.

      @perengstrom3414 Před 25 dny +3

      @@07BSPtC Yes, I have the same situation near my home, a left immediately followed by a right. It is hard at first, blinking left through both turns and then trying to turn it off and then start blinking the other way instead. But today I nailed it! It is possible, give it time. :)

      @perengstrom3414 Před 24 dny +2

      @@MichaelHallerandAssociates I mean freaking out when meeting incoming traffic who are driving close to the center of the road. You sit there pondering the state of the universe at 85 km/h with no trouble at all in sight, just normal traffic. Then suddenly the car throws itself to the right of the highway, braking hard screaming BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! You get completely surprised and disoriented franticly trying to understand what is happening still travelling at speed on a semi narrow highway. It is a heart stopping experience and it have happened maybe seven times the first ten days of ownership. So driving with adaptive cruise control, and certainly Autopilot, is something that make me tense up in anticipation of the car freaking out at any random moment, it gave me headache on my first long drive. It is better now since I adjusted to longer distance to the car in front. When the road are twisty and or hilly I have learned by experience to never use Autopilot. And Autopilot is not something that is relaxing even if it doesn't freak out, just the constant blue flashing nag "look at the road!" "move the steering wheel!". It is more tiring to use autopilot than steer yourself because the car constantly poke at you "Hey, are you there?" I can't even take a good look in the rear view mirror without getting poked by a stick. The software needs to chill out at lot more to be usable.

Excluding parking lots, I needed to disengage 8 times in ~1100 miles--the majority of those were due to construction on highways, which is still on the old C++ (non-neural network planning code). You don't need Level 4 robotaxi's for an elderly person to supervise FSD as it exists today. As long as they have a valid driver's license they should be fine to supervise FSD v12. If there is an edge case, or a place where they need to tap the accelerator to assure FSD it is safe to proceed, they can handle that.
      As a perfectly capable driver, I enjoy using Supervised FSD. I don't care if it is 99.9999% better than me yet. I pay extra attention at intersections and other tricky/dangerous parts of the drive. I relax on the other 99% of the drive. Well worth it as is. Excited to see it improve more.

While you are very enthusiastic about FSD I don't think even you realize the significance of what Tesla had done here with FSD. I believe most car accidents happen today because drivers make mistakes, they drive badly, or they are just plane reckless with their and others lives. These are issues that FSD could almost eliminate today if all automobiles were FSD enabled. This is not a GAME-CHANGER it's a WORLD CHANGER. I understand the goal is to achieve a widespread, full self-driving robotaxi solution. However, why not start with a more limited approach, such as a robotaxi service that operates only between specific car parks? This would be relatively easier from a software perspective, as it would restrict pick-up and drop-off locations to known, controlled environments. Not impact long term goals.
    I'm sure this idea has been proposed before, but I can't seem to find any discussions or rebuttals on it. Perhaps I'm using the wrong search terms.

With V12.3.6, I just checked the flashing red light at Flagler Lane and 190th street (you were almost there in your video). When going south into that 4 way stop blinking red light intersection, my HW 3 Model Y will just sit there. With V12.3.5 it would jerk an inch and stop and repeat indefinitely.

    Do we know how many miles on FSD that the average owner uses it?
    I would hazard a guess that the OG testers have a much much higher percentage. Also I would hazard a guess that because the OG testers are stress testing FSD that they find issues earlier.
    All this is to say that I believe that due to the above the data being trained on is heavily weighted with data from the OG and early testers, including Tesla's own test drivers.
    This could be the explanation for why it seems to behave better in certain regions in certain states. There is also the possible issue of emulation mode not running as well as native.
    I have actually had 12.3.6 run me off the road on an upward mountain curve because it was driving too fast so it could keep up with traffic. Reported of course.
    This indicates to me that the software is being more heavily trained and developed to be more for congested areas where Cybercabs would first be deployed. Smart!
    However this may cause the software to struggle more in rural, non-congested areas where road markings may not match the majority of the data being trained on.

    I've had my model 3 since 2018, and I used auto-steering as often as possible. I'm very confident using it on the highways. But, I'm relatively new to FSD, and I have 12.4.3 now.
    But it's dangerous!
    By that, I mean, it's dangerous to other drivers at intersections because 12.4.3 confuses them. At stop signs, it stops close to the stop sign, then moves forward, then creeps forward again, tentatively goes, then goes. Drivers behind me could think I'm "really" going, as they look left and right for on-coming traffic, and run into me. At 4-way stops, it pretty much does the same thing and waits for other vehicles who arrived well after I did. it should go but it doesn't, the other drivers go before me (out of turn) because they don't know what to expect...
    It's FAR too cautious and wants way too much room when pulling out in front of oncoming traffic. Again, frustrating drivers behind me.
    Maybe Tesla should activate the vehicle lights, like "flashing green" lights front and rear on the car when on FSD, so other drivers will be aware this vehicle is driving autonomously and may act erratically at times...
    It's getting better, like auto-steering did, but it's not there yet...

Did have to laugh a little at "even a Tesla can be driverless for Summin in a parking lot". Google that and all you would find at this point (without vision Smart Summon) and you see accidents up on curbs, wrecks, etc.

    Hello, do you really think there is still a reasonable chance to clash? I have been driving v12.3.6 and v12.4.3 and I never had a situation that I think it would have caused a clash if I hadn’t intervened. My intervention is mainly due to the awkwardness that may confuse other cars, or when it got into a situation that requires a manual operation to get out, like driving in to a dead end. It does very good job keeping it from an accident.

    In my first run using 12.4.3, a short loop of narrow roads, speed bumps, lots of pedestrians and cyclists, the car was nearly flawless, including a complex intersection that all prior versions failed to cross in the correct lane and requiring an intervention. The next day I made a longer trip in heavier rush hour traffic and again FSD 12.4.3 did very well until exiting a freeway. The car hesitated in selecting a lane and then went into the far left, a left turn only lane rather than keeping to the far right, right turn only lane. Then just before I moved to take the wheel, the car slowly moved across to the far right lane and made the turn. My passenger was not happy, the whole incident was bad. it was luck that there were no other cars behind us, On day one I was saying, boy this looks very close to a finished product and on day two, it was dangerous. Now it might be that the problem was due to a transition from the highway stack just at the point where the exit became a multilane surface street requiring a fast lane selection. But whatever it was it was a dangerous seesaw across three lanes and back again.
    Still hopeful.

    Another end-to-end watcher, this one from Australia. A great video and I'm a 'believer'. A few thoughts; I wonder how the learn't model will work in other geographies that have right hand drive, and what happens if states change the road laws - relearning might be an issue? The EU has passed laws that require blinker stalks and other physical buttons to get the highest safety rating - perhaps we need some global laws to give us uniformity. As a reasonably frequent visitor to the US, I look forward to being able to drive jetlagged on 'the wrong side of the road' to my destination without killing people.

    12.4.4.. maybe Tesla can have FSD bias a bit to the left (like trucks) when going on city streets with curbs. this way avoid depressed sewers, uneven pavement, etc. less abuse on tires, suspension and more comfortable for passengers. Please suggest to Tesla AI team

    I drive rideshare and last weekend I drove about 600 miles total and probably close to 400 miles was on FSD. This was in the city, rural, highways, mountain roads and even a couple dirt roads. Zero critical interventions. It truly is amazing how good it’s gotten.
    However there is a spot near my home where the road starts to widen for what becomes a right turn lane. Every single time I hit this area the car starts to veer to the right out of its lane. When it realizes it’s a turn lane it goes back to the left. Sometime smoothly and sometimes it aggressively brakes and moves over. It only does it at this one spot even though there are several of these right turnouts along this road. I’m still on 12.3.6 so I’m really curious to see if it’s better with the next update.

    The problem with FSD is that it's fantastic in suburban areas like in your video, but is absolutely not ready for congested city streets. A lot of youtubers will do "downtown" tests, but those are still suburban "downtowns" of small cities in US. FSD (at least in 12.3.6) falls apart in rush hour traffic in any major metropolitan area. Unfortunately for Tesla, these are exactly the areas which robotaxi will attempt to serve.
    Edit: 50:45 what an ironic statement "people don't understand how software works" where you proceed to make a false claim that FSD operates strictly on vision. Map data is integral to operation of FSD in it's current state. You would think this is something somebody who covers FSD would know.

    Omar, I'm looking forward to use the FSD in Europe once it arrives. But I'm retired now and don't really need to travel, mostly for shopping, more than once a week. The current pricing of some $200.- per month is way too much for me. I think people like me should have a possibility of paying for FSD on a per kilometer/mile basis, because currently, if these rates are used, it's definitely not worth the money. Just adding my 2cents to the discussion about its pricing. I never saw my use case anywhere so far.

    I invested in 2017 and have held on ever sense. I love following Tesla and most of the things Elon does. My great great Uncles were the Wright Brothers. They went through the same shit, big time. Things never seem to change. In 1902, the top scientists in the world pronounced man would not fly for a thousand years. The Wright Brothers flew the next year. As Americans, they tried to sell the Wright Flyer to the US Army ,and they would never respond to them for five years. I really appreciate your perspective and all of the helpful things you say. As to Elon, I don't necessarily agree with all of his views, but I just focus on what he has been doing since 2010. I believe it's been ten years since Elon successfully landed a first stage rocket. That is absolutely an amazing accomplishment. What's maybe more amazing is NO ONE ELSE CAN TO IT AFTER TEN YEARS. That's what keeps me going. That and people like you... Paul Edwards
