This was our third interview with Joey Ramone over the years and was by far the most in-depth. The interview took place in Columbus, Ohio and was conducted by guest correspondent WCSB-FM DJ Sadé.
Can you imagine if Joey stuck around long enough to live the next chapters of his life . He would've had the hugest podcast ever.He had so much more than just the Ramones to offer.
Ain't that the truth!!!!!!!! One thing I learned from all the time I spent with him over the years - in interviews and just in casual conversation - is that Joey ALWAYS talked about bands he was listening to and who he liked, trying to give new bands a leg up. He was the epitome of cool.
We were fortunate enough to open for both the RAMONES and Black Flag and have a conversation with him afterwards. The main thing is that he would always see and treat you as a regular person while our tour with Slayer overseas was quite different; Kerry King ( a trust fund baby folks!) wouldn’t have given Us the time of day as he would never let his guard down trying to be that same level of cooler than everyone else. I met him one and he was so down to earth and generous. Everyday of his life he’s dealing with fawning fans but he didn’t act that way. We talked about Ronnie Spector and it’s one of my most treasured memories. There’s not many people I look up to, but he was one and he didn’t disappoint. Beautiful soul and his life’s story is inspirational
Joey was one smart cookie. A wealth of info and charming to boot. Each time he said artistic, had to realize he was not saying autistic. Could listen to him all day.
I'm from Queens too (I live a couple of blocks away from the building where Joey lived with his mom and brother), and I have the exact same accent. It's an old school Queens NYC accent that can make some words sound a little strange if you're not used to hearing it, lol.
I got to meet Joey and hang out with him after one of their shows in Nashville. They were all nice to me. He made you feel like you've known him a long time. The Ramones where Dynamite. I love them and I miss them all very much . It was an honor to meet Joey.
My favourite interview of Joey, the interviewer was brilliant in this. So relaxed and she let Joey get his thoughts out without bombarding him with too many questions etc. It's like two friends having a chat. He was so amazing and knowledgable. ❤🤘

I was lucky enough to have known Joey. I became friends with his brother 1st, Mickey Leigh, then the band I was playing in was the biggest band in NYC at the time. Joey used to always come up to me to talk at bars and clubs. He asked me to come hang out at his place 1 day on 3rd ave, and we listened to music etc.. At the time, he gave me the title for a new song he had in mind, i think he wanted me to take it... Every Days a holiday Except When I'm With You. LoL. Another LES punk band ended up with it. I wish I wasn't so shy and introverted back then, and more open like now. I should've talked more, etc.. Anyway, my memories of Joey are just what you'd expect, he was so down to earth, and I was lost in space :( RIP Joey

I met Joey at The Cat Club back it the 80's. It was Joey Ramone's Beach Bash. I met Dee Dee and his wife there and also Mason Reese who was a judge in the wet t-shirt contest! Seen The Ramones about 30 times! They were The Best to see live! I really miss them.

I was born in 2000. I am lucky and privileged to be born when he was around and active. I would of been 1 when he died and in my opinion the best frontman in a band The R.A.M.O.N.E.S
i was born in 93 but I have such a great love and respect for Joey. he was a really good guy. I know the band didn't get along but I think they stayed together as long as they did so Joey could have his stage fix that would drowned out the OCD in his head.
Read his brother's book, 'I Slept with Joey Ramone.' Mickey talks about all of that and gives Joey's story a wonderful airing - all the good AND the bad stuff. Highly recommended.
@@vidmagmedia2156 I still haven't read that book yet. Mostly because Joey's brother has always struck me as an idiot. He has always seemed to have an attitude of 'It should have been me', whenever he is interviewed. I'm sure you know what I mean. He can be asked a question about his brother or the band and he'll twist his answer into a statement about himself. Plus, there is the whole thing about him suing Johnny's wife 3 or 4 times... But I'm sure there are some great stories that every Ramone fan would like to hear. So I will eventually get around to reading it.

I live, basically, in the middle of Columbus and Cincinnati. Never got to see The Ramones, but have been a fan for most of my life. My living here, the majority of my life (born and raised, but lived out of state once), makes this interview more special. I travel to South America a bit. Seeing all the Ramones fans is pretty cool. So glad you liked it. I just finished his brother Mickey Leigh's book tonight and it brought tears to my eyes at the end as he described Joey leaving the world. This interview, the third we did with him (the first that I didn't conduct myself) is the most special because he was so outgoing and warm. As you can see by the other comments, it was very well received. I would never even think about taking it down because it IS so special. I first met them in 1979 and had seen them on every tour but one between then and 1993, including on this tour in Columbus. The first time I interviewed him was on the Animal Boy tour in Fredonia, New York, just after the album was released and they tried a different approach to their music, heavier and more hardcore than they had been previously. Aside from The Dead Boys they were my favourite punk band of all time and the only band I saw more often than any other. By the way, speaking of the Dead Boys, there will be a major documentary premiering in Cleveland on the 23rd of March. I'm one of the executive producers of the film and will be moderating a Q&A session after the film. If you can make it to Cleveland I highly recommend coming to see it!!!!

I think that he knew he was dying when we did this. It truly was a great conversation and one of my fondest memories in my life in music and by far my favourite visit with Joey since I met the band in 1979.
Yes this interview happened in 1990/91 based on the content. He refers to maybe a Ramones song featuring in the T2 film (came out in 1991) and the track Censorshit on the forthcoming album Mondo Bizarro 1992. He wasn't diagnosed with lymphoma until 1995

He was always quick to want to promote other bands that he really liked and I really liked that about him because it showed how unselfish he was in that regard. Of all the interviews that we did in the seven years that I ran my show, this one was one of the very best interviews we ever got. Joey will now live on forever and I'm happy to have been part of allowing that to happen.

It baffles me how looking at him and listening to him - he was a total nerd. Back then he managed to become a punk rock star, yet these days the same people are into their star wars and gaming. Literally the same kind of people (especially considering that SciFi posters were being collected by I forgot which Ramone - could have been Joey, Markey mentioned it in one interview)

Greatest video ever from a real sprit like joey.. the ramones will forever and always be my favorite band of all time.. I'm in a wheelchair and used to be a singer in my first punk rock band at 16.. and it's because of the ramones I grew into my own individuality and opend up to new music.. it's a damn shame I was to young in the 90s to see them live.. but I had a dream when I was 14 I saw them live.. and that dream felt so real it was like the ramones played a great show in my own dream.. God bless the ramones they are what make me proud to be American and love the roots of rock n roll and all music.

I was fortunate to see them more times than I can count between 1979 and 1993 - missed them in 1980 though - and in a number of locations.

I never liked Johnny Ramone too much, mainly because he treated Joey real crappy. Upon re-evaluating the situation, Johnny made some real sacrifices for the band. Johnny was dealing with bandmates with significant mental health issues, Dee Dee was crazy as a road lizard and Marky became an alcoholic to mask his own mental quirks, Then you had Joey with his OCD. Johnny had to contend with the drug and alcohol abuse by all three of his bandmates, Joey's drinking and love of cocaine, Dee Dee's love of drink, heroin and any other drugs he could grab and Marky drank like a fish. Unfortunately Joey and Johnny were the least compatible. It didn't help when Johnny stole Joey's girlfriend Linda, Johnny was a right wing conservative Republican while Joey was a left wing liberal Democrat. These men were cordial with one another for the greater good which was for the sake of the band, The Ramones. Joey did appreciate Johnny's business acumen because Johnny kept everyone's bank account juiced up, $$$$. In Johnny's book he did have some kind words for Joey, praising his singing abilities and steadfast commitment to the Ramones.
he really.looks like he had undignosed marfan syndrom. all the caraturistics of the disease is there.. many of his friends and family said no, but like I said, I do think he knew that's was what he had, and so of course those close to him will say no.. he looked like he didn't feel well even before his illness with lymphoma came about..
You're right. I had forgotten about that. That means it must have been 1990 because if it had been in 91 we would probably have talked about Johnny Thunders as well.
Look at 'Don't Worry About Me.' That's why I think he knew something was up with him. All positive songs - the title song, 'What A Wonderful World,' 'I got Knocked Down (But I'll Get Up).' Yeah, Joey knew something was up. And I will always miss him. He was a great guy.
I never said he knew he had cancer but I DO think he knew he wasn't going to live much longer and that's why he put a bunch of songs on 'Don't Worry About Me' - including the title track - that had a theme to them.
hard disagree - I think he genuinely thought he was going to recover. He was actually making significant progress on the cancer, but had a slip and fall on the street in December 2000 and broke a hip. His health deteriorated in the months after that, and he died in April. It seems he held out hope until as late as March of recovery, according to his brother's account.
@@gtneal I don't know. When I listen to his solo stuff it seems he was pretty resigned to what was happening. And Mickey's book didn't really give me much reason to doubt that.
That's only partly true, Barbara.. I had two friends who both died from it - yes it comes on slowly but could get very aggressive very fast like it did to Rick and Chris.

+Jeff Reding Don't wanna be a smartass as it's a great interview, but @ 17:10 Joey mentions the upcoming 'Terminator 2' movie. Therefore this interview wasn't recorded any time after 1991, as 1991 was the year the movie was released.

I think that he knew he was dying when we did this. It truly was a great conversation and one of my fondest memories in my life in music and by far my favourite visit with Joey since I met the band in 1979.

Yes this interview happened in 1990/91 based on the content. He refers to maybe a Ramones song featuring in the T2 film (came out in 1991) and the track Censorshit on the forthcoming album Mondo Bizarro 1992. He wasn't diagnosed with lymphoma until 1995

He was a great guy and always gave me respect whenever we met. He was a very friendly guy and had a lot of really good things to say. He was always quick to want to promote other bands that he really liked and I really liked that about him because it showed how unselfish he was in that regard. Of all the interviews that we did in the seven years that I ran my show, this one was one of the very best interviews we ever got. Joey will now live on forever and I'm happy to have been part of allowing that to happen.

It baffles me how looking at him and listening to him - he was a total nerd. Back then he managed to become a punk rock star, yet these days the same people are into their star wars and gaming. Literally the same kind of people (especially considering that SciFi posters were being collected by I forgot which Ramone - could have been Joey, Markey mentioned it in one interview)

Greatest video ever from a real sprit like joey.. the ramones will forever and always be my favorite band of all time.. I'm in a wheelchair and used to be a singer in my first punk rock band at 16.. and it's because of the ramones I grew into my own individuality and opend up to new music.. it's a damn shame I was to young in the 90s to see them live.. but I had a dream when I was 14 I saw them live.. and that dream felt so real it was like the ramones played a great show in my own dream.. God bless the ramones they are what make me proud to be American and love the roots of rock n roll and all music.
Thank you Matt. I'm glad you liked it. It was an absolutely brilliant interview and lots of people told me that they had never heard him open up like he did here. I was fortunate to see them more times than I can count between 1979 and 1993 - missed them in 1980 though - and in a number of locations.

I never liked Johnny Ramone too much, mainly because he treated Joey real crappy.
Upon re-evaluating the situation, Johnny made some real sacrifices for the band.
Johnny was dealing with bandmates with significant mental health issues, Dee Dee was crazy as a road lizard and Marky became an alcoholic to mask his own mental quirks,
Then you had Joey with his OCD.
Johnny had to contend with the drug and alcohol abuse by all three of his bandmates, Joey's drinking and love of cocaine, Dee Dee's love of drink, heroin and any other drugs he could grab and Marky drank like a fish.
Unfortunately Joey and Johnny were the least compatible.
It didn't help when Johnny stole Joey's girlfriend Linda, Johnny was a right wing conservative Republican while Joey was a left wing liberal Democrat. These men were cordial with one another for the greater good which was for the sake of the band, The Ramones.
Joey did appreciate Johnny's business acumen because Johnny kept everyone's bank account juiced up, $$$$.
In Johnny's book he did have some kind words for Joey, praising his singing abilities and steadfast commitment to the Ramones.
he really.looks like he had undignosed marfan syndrom. all the caraturistics of the disease is there.. many of his friends and family said no, but like I said, I do think he knew that's was what he had, and so of course those close to him will say no.. he looked like he didn't feel well even before his illness with lymphoma came about..

Joey is a great singer. Horrible politics. Ugliest Rock Star ever. But his vocals from every Ramones record is on point.

Look at 'Don't Worry About Me.' That's why I think he knew something was up with him. All positive songs - the title song, 'What A Wonderful World,' 'I got Knocked Down (But I'll Get Up).' Yeah, Joey knew something was up. And I will always miss him. He was a great guy.
I never said he knew he had cancer but I DO think he knew he wasn't going to live much longer and that's why he put a bunch of songs on 'Don't Worry About Me' - including the title track - that had a theme to them.
He found out he had cancer in 1995
hard disagree - I think he genuinely thought he was going to recover. He was actually making significant progress on the cancer, but had a slip and fall on the street in December 2000 and broke a hip. His health deteriorated in the months after that, and he died in April. It seems he held out hope until as late as March of recovery, according to his brother's account.
@@gtneal I don't know. When I listen to his solo stuff it seems he was pretty resigned to what was happening. And Mickey's book didn't really give me much reason to doubt that.

That's only partly true, Barbara.. I had two friends who both died from it - yes it comes on slowly but could get very aggressive very fast like it did to Rick and Chris.
