Suzannah, I think it’s very understandable in your situation to feel overwhelmed, lacking in creativity and experiencing imposter syndrome. You have been through two major life changes - becoming a new mother and moving house - these alone are huge upheavals not to mention continued sleepless nights. I admire your honesty and how you are just sharing your humanity. Things will change and until then just continue to do what you need to do for your mental health. That’s what's most important, not what youtube viewers want. Your genuine viewers will go on the journey with you and many new viewers will follow such a genuine, talented photographer as you. Take care of you and the little one.

Hello Mary, thank you so much for your kind comments. Yes, you are right. Given everything going on, it can be quite difficult to get outside and create images. I think being completely open and genuine shows who I am as a person and may be able to help other people in my position or are going through something similar. Thanks yes I shall 😊

As many have said Suzannah I think we all suffer from it. You touched on the most important thing that it’s good for your well-being. I used to think that I wasn’t a good photographer because I wasn’t getting likes etc on instagram. I used to let it get me down but then I realised that I do photography for me. It gets me out of the house, if I get a photograph then it’s brilliant but if I don’t I don’t care as I’ve been out in nature. As for instagram I couldn’t care if anyone likes my photos, as long as I like them that’s all that matters. Your photos are great but also we are our own worst critics as well. Just continue being you 🙌🏻

Agree with all your points, particularly the points about instagram. I’ve been on instagram just over a year and I’m beginning to think it’s just a waste of time. I only have about 2 or 3 people who I don’t personally know who actually comment or give a like to my photos, any other comments or likes are from family or friends and most of time even they don’t bother 😂😂. The reason I keep doing it is that it is nice to get a little bit of interaction and it also gives me a bit of a kick to process my photos rather than just let them sit on my hard drive until the end of time.😢

Hey Suzie, don't be so hard on yourself, everyone who follows your journey loves you for your natural presentation and content. Whether it's photography, music, any creative art, has ups and downs. I think you do pretty well with a job, a baby and a CZcams channel (not to mention a sore knee lol). Take time when you need it, you're doing great but don't burn yourself out. Because that way we all lose :) Rod.

Two things - you’re the only photography CZcamsr that takes a child along with them for the ride. If time is a constraint, then use it to your advantage. There are plenty of people who doddle when making images. You’ve got to see and make images quickly to placate your captive audience of one. Lean into both of these things. Rebrand yourself if necessary as the mother with child photographer who practices speed reading of a scene/composition. Turn what you perceive as a disadvantage into your strength. There are plenty of photographers out there that feel they don’t have the time to get out and photograph. Be the inspiration to them to show that they can make images with the few spare moments that they have in a day or week.

I have been following Nigel for a long time. Have taken his master classes and acquired a few of his books. I was excited to see you with Nigel, and him learning from you. Infact, I told Nigel how wonderful it was him paring up with you, and I hope we may see more of it. Following you is like following a friend. New to the channel, your work is great!
Imposter syndrome can affect all, but as a woman in a still largely patriarchal society, there are so.manu additional challenges in the wolrd to overcome and a lack of reference or context as to how one fits in within male dominated professions in particular.
Keep your head up high, keep doing and sharing what you create and how you feel, exactly as you are... An individual!
Little by little it gets better.

I always have Imposter Syndrome after decades of photoshoots and personal work in and out of the studio, then there are times where I feel I could teach a master class of photography especially when you get on a creative rush and everyone is saying great things about my work and/or models are contacting me to shoot more and more. It is when I occasionally step away from consistent bookings or personal work where I come back to earth so to speak.
I think as creators we will always judge ourselves with high expectations. We may "try" to compare ourselves to others but subconsciously we will.
A quote I discovered recently puts it all in perspective where [and I'm paraphrasing] It is the Process that is most important, Not Perfection. As long as we value the journey, That is where the real reward is.
As an ex photojournalist way back when, I find the Story telling is way more valuable in photography than having that shiny perfect image of a random model or landscape. To me most of the time I look back and find remembering the Story of an image way more valuable than that perfectly lit and composed shot... but it isn't fleeting knowing that those perfect images are still somewhere in the tool bag if I need it.
Another thing I have come to grips with is that eventually, especially in today's fast swipe social media attention span that My images are just like or not any better than the next guy's. It is why I have internalized what I care to shoot. As long as I'm happy with it, it is all that matters.

    • @FocusFlowBySuzannahMary
      @FocusFlowBySuzannahMary  Před měsícem +1

You make such a valuable point that it's important to shoot for yourself and no one else. I think because I have built this channel over a number of years, there is an underlying feeling of producing high quality content, but that can be difficult when the chips are down and there's a lot of changes in your personal life. It's really interesting to hear that you have also felt imposter syndrome. I think a lot of people do. It's just not a lot of people talk about it. I think juggling multiple spinning plates is usually the trigger. Like you said when you had lots of bookings and work. It is totally the process, which is the most enjoyable part and it's important to shoot for enjoyment, not for personal value in others. I'm glad I stayed out this shoot because I actually managed to film another vlog and take lots of images which I'll share with you next week. Thanks for your kind words and your supporting comment 🙏

@@FocusFlowBySuzannahMary I can't imagine what stresses there are on putting out content here on you tube and having to make them worthy of lots of views, so I can understand that aspect of it. I guess it falls into a Client Based professional work where we as the audience are your client consuming what you put out. That has to be tough. I have always leaned towards channels that are not supper planned out, basically shooting what comes along, obviously with a lose plan but a casual approach to photography as an art form in the real world. I feel yours is kind of like that "idea driven but lets see what we get" feel and it as some others are more relatable in that sense I feel. Sometimes we are successful and sometimes we fail when we go out and shoot, as long as we are out practicing and exploring the photographic process... That is good news you managed to get some images that day. Looking forward to see what you got. 👍

Suzannah, I've definitely experienced imposter syndrome in my photography and other areas of my life. I just have to accept that the people that asked me to do work for them knew what they were getting. They appeared to be satisfied with the results.
Please don't be too hard on yourself. You've had lots of big life changes. I've had to learn that sometimes it's best not to push through and to take time out when you can. When I've gone out to take photos while not felt like well, I've just got poor images back and got even more disheartened.

Hi Suzannah. Yes, in answer to your question, I do get a lot of Imposter Syndrome, sometimes I can feel that you're photography isn't very good compared to others. Especially people who've been practicing it for years!
When you asked what we consider to be important, I think for me personally it's being genuine in your videos, whether or not you're struggling, creatively or otherwise. I'm struggling at the moment, health wise and that in turn is affecting my creativity. I just don't feel well enough to get out with my camera, but that can then have an impact on my mental health. It becomes a vicious circle!

    • @FocusFlowBySuzannahMary
      @FocusFlowBySuzannahMary  Před měsícem +1

I think with social media being so much is had a part to play in that too. I'm glad to hear being yourself is what people want to see, I'm sorry to hear you are struggling with your health, I can see how that can be a vicious circle and as I said I do not qualify to complain where so many people have more struggled and barriers than I do. Cheers for the support 🌲

  • @stuhhamptonphotography

Hi Suzannah - I think you just need to be honest with yourself, continue your approach to your photography with the intentions & purpose and the same passion now that you had at the beginning, believe in yourself knowing that you like your images and does it really matter what others think? I suffer with imposter syndrome, I would bet most creatives do, but when this raises its ugly head I tell myself that I really like my image making and that's all that matters.
I really enjoy watching quality videos that reflect a photographers passion so I'd rather see quality & honesty over quantity but poor quality.
Enjoy exploring and image making 😎

Before you invest in a macro lens look at a quality diopter. If you size it for your larger diameter lens then use step down rings. Playing with the focal length can make the depth of field more manageable.
If you leave a restaurant early you have a reason to come back and try something different. In the same breath there are lots of different restaurants.

@@FocusFlowBySuzannahMary the diopter screws on the lens like a filter so the camera isn’t involved with the mount. Some are cheep plastic I recommend a glass. Currently I am using the Nisi on just about any of my lenses.
As a side note not all close up is macro you can have fun working at the minimum focus distance of your long lenses.
Another in expensive option are extension tubes but I have had less success with them.

Suzannah, are you an imposter? Absolutely not. Do not judge yourself by those that do not like what you do. Nobody pleases everyone. First of all, do you enjoy what you do? It sounds like it. And secondly, are there viewers of your "product" (images or videos) that like it? Yep. Is the "quality" of the "art" "good enough" ? Now that is the question of the ages. The beauty of the art is in the eye of the beholder. Woodland photography is really hard for me, I don't do much of it. I really like it when I see someone succeed and get great images that I am unable to see. I have done some mushroom photography, really enjoyed it, and am looking forward to how you approach it, and seeing the resulting images. You do great work. You put words to the art, and you do a great job doing so. I especially appreciate your words of inspiration and encouragement. You have a much better way with words than I.

🙏 Dear Suzannah, some ideas: take just one step at a time. There is just The Now (Eckhart Tolle). I walk the same round just near my house twice a week. Even after 4 years I come home with different pictures. And one in 10 is good. I discover scenic places I never knew of (just 5 minute walking from home). And I bought recently a monochrome camera: that is comforting, easy, beautiful and joyful. I have no urge to share or sell the images..... its just for fun and a good reason to walk around. (Most people buy a dog, to get out).... take your time ( its already yours anyway)... oh and if your son ask attention on the moment you want to make the picture. Take a quick snapshot of what you saw. You’ ll get your time later. And it might be a good practice to fotograph quickly from instinct.

@@FocusFlowBySuzannahMary Thanks - One more thing… your story made me think more about motivation and learning. It’s healthy to aim for growth, and seeing and learning from other photographers is a great way (I surely did), but there’s a danger as well - look at all the YT video’s saying ‘Pros do this’ or ‘What beginners don’t know and the pros do’ or something like that. I feel the main goal should not be about techical skill levels and perfection; it should be about your own experiences, creation in itself, enjoying. Every step is important, every failure, every success, every so-so, every imperfection. This is why I love to follow photographers that share their journey in a very honest way, more so than the ‘pros’. Together the steps make the journey and each journey is unique (luckily!). I can also recommend to you Sean Tucker’s recent video on motivation/growth. All the best!

You don’t need any qualifications to have a You tube channel, no need for O levels, A levels or a masters degree, anybody can start one and anybody can be successful. Similarly you don’t need any qualifications to be a photographer or to call yourself a photographer, there are lots of self taught successful photographers in all categories of photography.
I think the fault some small you tube channels make is assuming that the channels with lots of subscribers are automatically better photographers, that’s not necessarily true. There are a lot of small you tube photography channels where the photographers are producing some really good work but for whatever reason it doesn’t manifest in to lots of subscribers or views, it’s probably unfair but talent doesn’t always reap the rewards it deserves.
Please try and stop assuming your not good enough, for the people who watch and enjoy your videos and photography, your very much good enough. Try not to compare your you tube channel to others, try not to be envious, success is different for everybody, your successes are unique to you.
