  • Christian Horner has claimed that Lewis Hamilton's team approached him about a Red Bull seat in 2024. And confirmed he had talks with Ferrari. Blimey.

Carlos Sainz is the perfect 2nd driver, slower, but very reliable and on his day even matches or surpasses Leclerc. But he has few of these days, so has not to get the team problems with decisions of they were to fight for a WDC.

I’m quite sure Hamilton’s team reach out to other F1 teams so they can use that fact when operating to renegotiate contracts. IMO, there’s no way Hamilton would actually go to RedBull and RedBull wouldn’t even consider having him unless Verstappen were to do a Rosberg and unexpectedly retire from the sport. Hamilton has an incredible amount of freedom within Mercedes and I suspect he wouldn’t get that range from being at RedBull.
Overall, it’s fun to speculate but this would never happen. If RedBull did decide to have both Max & Lewis as their drivers, it my be entertaining for the fans initially, but over the season this would cause more problems for RedBull, the drivers are too closely matched and I’m sure they’ll have even more crashes and need for team orders - which would not be a good look.

The main problem for Lewis would be that he likes his cars with a bit more understeer, the RB is really pointy. On the other side, Max would likely struggle to match Lewis in a Mercedes. All things considered, Checo going to Merc would be a stronger challenge to Lewis than Lewis would be to Max in a RB. If Red Bull wants 2 fast drivers in their car, they should consider someone like Charles, he thrives with oversteer.

Now this would never have any chance of happening but just imagine a world were Hamilton and Verstappen are on the same team for multiple seasons and are constantly battling for titles. This would only ever have a chance of working if Hamilton joined earlier on so there can be multiple seasons of Max vs Lewis with both of them at their peaks. Red Bull would also have to be insanely far ahead of the other teams cause otherwise if there is a close competitor one would simply leave and and attempt to win a championship with them.
All extreniuating circumstances would have to be perfect for this to ever happen but if It would every season would be so hype. Imagine a stretch of like 5 years were Hamilton and Verstappen would go back and forth in winning championships. Shit would be so fire (and toxic lmao).

The source was the Daily Mail- I HIGHLY DOUBT the source. But if something did happen, then it’s natural tbh. It’s common practice too. All drivers will talk to other teams to put pressure on their own team for a better deal. Just look at Norris basically using Red Bull as a way to extract more value from McLaren. Or Verstappen forcing himself into F1 by talking to Red Bull and Mercedes at the same time. I wouldn't look too much into it, it makes perfect sense.
Additionally, the passive phrasing used by Horner in the quotes does not actually state it was Hamilton’s side that reached out. It leaves open the possibility that Red Bull made the inquiry, but is framed to lead to the assumption it was Hamilton who approached Red Bull.

Whether or not it's true that Lewis did approach Red Bull and Ferrari, Red Bull overall have dodged a massive bullet by passing on Lewis. It's going to be a 100% chance for fireworks that would immediately go off the moment they come to blows (which I'd bet would happen in Race #1). It would basically torpedo Red Bull's relations with Max if they start picking sides (or maybe even not picking sides causes problems). And Max has basically been their ace since Ricciardo left.
Honestly I won't be surprised if Lewis really did reach out or find other prospects whether to just kick Mercedes to do better and maybe give favorable contract terms or to genuinely find someone else by taking a leap of faith. It's not like this is the first time Lewis makes a then-questionable move. It does say a lot about Mercedes though that their star driver could be potentially upping and leaving from how bad things are now in that team. It likely won't happen (more so looking at it now), but just the potential option being there is probably the warning shot the Mercedes should take note of.
Had Lewis left this year at this critical point of what can be considered as passing of the torch of lead driver from Lewis to George for Mercedes' future, the team probably can't recover to where it was maybe for another 5 years because they now have George who is still learning and another young driver that they have to place in the other seat who will also be learning.

Lewis is a brand, you’re absolutely right. He’s a business man. This was a “feeler” at most from Lewis’ camp, meant to drive up his next contract with Merc. Maybe Ferrari- and that’s a sharp maybe because of his depth with Merc brands (Monster, etc.)- if the branding made sense and if the platform could deliver a championship w/in this season and/or the next.

honestly I think it would work in Verstappen’s advantage. Lewis is more emotional, the car’s design is not what Lewis is used to driving. I think Lewis would make a lot of emotional mistakes and gaslight some shizzle. And Verstappen would rise above that. Max statistically learns tracks faster than Hamilton with new setups as well as completely new tracks,, and has more p1 wins not from pole than Hamilton. Lewis really mostly needs to be on pole to win and despite he’s always fighting, he tends to make triggered mistakes when a strategy isn’t really go his way. It would be an interesting first half of the season. I wonder how many DNF’s.

Hot take, I think Max and Lewis will work better in a champion winning team then Lewis and Russel. I feel like Lewis will easier accept adversary form Max Loosing to Russel. I'm sure he would get doubts about his skill is he was genuinely challenged by Russel while being challenged by Max would motivate him more. Loosing to Max is a lot better optic then loosing to Russel (hypothetically speaking, not sure who would win if they were to be in the same team.) Also, I Russel is more the type of driver who would convert to playing Nico style team games.

Max has said that he doesn´t care who his teammate is or becomes. Because he knows he´s got two tenths on everybody on the grid. He said this after Hamilton made those comments about him having an easy time with Checo. I don´t know if that´s true but i do believe that he believes this. He wouldn´t veto a move from another driver. I think Red Bull would never allow this while Marko is in charge. Marko has always chosen for a clear number 1 and number 2 in the past.

    • @ihsanjayadi88

Max's confidence is good, but the numbers speaks for themselves. The raw pace data calculated from same-car-teammates speaks for themselves that they are within 0.069% of each other in Lewis' favor if they're in equal machinery. While this is 2019 data, and Lewis definitely regressed since then as he got older, the difference would be minuscule but might finally tip to Max's favor as Lewis got older.

Now I say this as someone who doesn't particularly like either of them, I do wonder whether a big section of the fans of both of them truly are F1 fans or just bandwagon jumpers.
When they start crying about loyalty or about a driver blocking another from joining a team, do they really know how this all works?
For starters, team loyalty really is not a thing in the big scheme of things. Yes Mercedes have given Lewis 6 of his 7 titles, but people have to remember how much McLaren invested in him from a very young age, and that did not stop him leaving. Drivers who stay loyal are not championship material. They go where they think they can achieve the most. When Schumacher left Benetton for Ferrari he knew there was a challenge, but he made the right decision. Benetton went backwards and Ferrari went forwards.
As for blocking other drivers, well that's nothing new either. Prost blocked Senna joining Williams in 1993. Senna had done the same with drivers, as have many others over the years. You can bet your bottom dollar that Hamilton, Alonso & Vettel have all either blocked drivers or at least tried.
