    I have only just subscibed to this channel after it was recommended by Dan Gryder. And guess what, the very first episode i watch is a trip into an electroplating shop. I have been working in a plating shop for the last 49 years since i left school.
    My first "on the job" training was on the Cadmium line, I literally plated 1000s of tons over the years until it got banned here in the UK. Done mega amounts of zinc too, along with copper, brass and electroless nickel. These days we just specialize in doing hard chromium, mainly repairing parts that have worn out, but some new stuff too. A fair amoint of stuff we do is for aviation.
    Really enjoyed watching this.

      Plating is one of the unsung heroes of machinery. I ended up sending a pair of motorcycle front forks to the UK for straightening and plating. Couldn't find anyone in the colonies to do it! Thanks for watching!

      @@HangaRatz Motorcycle front forks are always challenging to grind, pre and post plating. Firstly you never really know how deep any damage will be until you actually grind them. And secondly if you end up removing 050" of stock from a 125" wall thickness tube, how safe will they be afterwards?
      On top of all that grinding the hard chrome plating only goes on at approximately 001" per hour, so if an item needs 050" deposit, then its in the vat of chrome for 50 to 60 hours. "Time is money" as the old saying goes, very expensive money with hard chrome. Our electricity bill every month is enormous, the chemicals are expensive, and the effluent produced by the electroplating process is mega expensive to dispose of. Having said all that, we always seem to be kept very busy by customers.

    Another awesome vid! these dudes are balsy to be working and breathing around those heated rinses and solutions. I know that cad plating is awesome, and there is nothing quite like it. There is definitely a reason for such strict regulation, and prior ban in the US though. The obvious toll these processes have taken on the building, floors, walls, and equipment are a great indicator of what they can do to your body and health. HCl, Cadmium oxide, and sodium cyanide among other things... cancer baths. That dude is dressed like he is about to go golfing, rather than reaching gloveless into a cad plating solution tank! I wouldn't want to work in there, but I'm sure these guys have been working like this for years, bare hands and all. Old school. I don't know much about it though
    Keep them coming, loving this build series!

      We did our tour after hours. You can tell as most of the tanks are dormant. Tim is very particular about safety precautions and all that. The facility may look a little rustic however they have been in that location for over 30 years. Sort of looks like any work area with splashes all day long. They are very particular about using their PPE. Thanks for watching!

    Gold colored cadmium plating looks good but one must be aware of its consequence if hi strength steel parts are cad. plated since they are subject to hydrogen embrittlement.
    The cathodic polarization of steel by this process can result in hydrogen atoms entering the steel reducing its ductility and making it more crack prone.
    I suppose cylinder hold-down nuts could be considered to be hi strength steel but I would have to determine their material spec in order to confirm that.

      I was not aware that baking for a period of time would liberate the hydrogen atoms.

    • @HangaRatz
      @HangaRatz  Před rokem

      Yes. All of our parts gets baked following plating.

    Cool to see they let you take a tour. I worked in a plating shop for 5 years. It’s a dirty job but is a wonderful corrosion protectant for parts. What happened to the valve covers?

    • @HangaRatz
      @HangaRatz  Před 3 lety +2

      Hey Nate, we're not plating the valve covers as we are painting them on this engine. If we plate the valve covers the paint ends up flaking because the cad plating is tough to get paint to stick. Doing it's job... We plated the intake tubes because they end up getting lots of things attached to them (primer lines, ignition, wires, etc.) and get scratched up if we had painted them. Thanks for watching!

    Great series on the reman of the engine. If you are looking for content, this may make a good educational video, can you go over the cost break down to rebuild this engine. I know there are allot of variables. I am curious of the break down in parts, labor, machine shop, etc. Maybe you can touch on the cost difference between a certified and experimental engine rebuild. Thanks

    Is new hardware CAD plated?

    • @HangaRatz
      @HangaRatz  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes. The original hardware loses its cad plating over the years due to exposure and surface corrosion.

    No coating on aluminium.
    * very interesting process of cleaning, washing, electroplating, washing and baking.
    * not specific to aviation industry.
    * cost of process by pound weight. (Obviously, cost-effective than purchasing new parts "giblets").
