    I don't quite agree with the thesis that Russians are not that sociable. It's just that Americans talk to everyone , and this communication is "superficial." And Russian people have a strong depth of character. They are not interested in empty conversations . If you talk to a person , you talk to them with all your heart .

      I absolutely agree! It's just that Americans and I have a different understanding of the term "sociability" - just smile at everyone and chat about nothing superficially - this is not sociability in Russian!)))

      Agree! It’s in the culture to not smile or laugh without a reason, and making eye contact doesn’t qualify as reason. Remember how Americans mocked Soviet figure skaters for not smiling from ear yo ear while waiting for their score? Talked about how miserable and oppressed they must be? Well, it just wasn’t a moment that warranted smiling.

    Medicine in Russia is free for everyone; to do this, you need to get a medical insurance policy and register with any clinic. The ambulance arrives free of charge, even if you call it every day. There are also paid clinics if you have extra money. Pharmacies are 24/7, where you can buy medications without a prescription, even antibiotics. One day, I forgot the recipe at home and they sold it to me, taking my word of honor. They cut out my appendix, I was in the hospital for 2 weeks until the stitches were removed. I was treated, given injections, fed, and when I was discharged I did not pay a single ruble. On the contrary, my employer paid me sick leave in the same amount as my salary. God bless Putin!

    The 90's thriving economy of the US you're talking about was due to the fall of the USSR and the plundering its resources by Americans. Same reason why Dems and Conservatives were friends as you say, they were feasted on the corpse of their competitor at the expense of the poverty and life of the Russian people. Yes, your politicians then had nothing to fight for; they had everything in abundance. As a Russian, I cannot share your optimism for those times.

Only cheese in a mousetrap is free. For these apartments, the working people plowed in three shifts, like in Papa Carlo's band group. First of all, apartments were given to married people, or at the birth of a child. They were given to great scientists, cosmonauts, and other "honored artists", taking into account how much the average Russian worker earned at that time, and American, it is safe to say that a person still earned money for his apartment, but because of low salaries, he could not buy it. But the Soviet authorities framed this case as if they were handing over this apartment for free. So don't write all this nonsense.

    One point about Russian conservatism (speaking as a Russian). Traditional values are something that's being taught to you since childhood, but that's not something that's being enforced.
    From movies etc. I get the vibe that American conservatives often see it as their civil duty to interfere whenever they see something that goes against their idea of good and bad. For example, I remember a scene in some American show where a policeman saw a car where teenagers were making love, and he interfered to stop them and take them home. That seemed quite wild to me. Like, why are you minding other people's business? No crime is being committed, so why do you take it on yourself to get involved?
    Russians in general are quite suspicious of the people who force their ideas on others. For this reason being ideological (regardless of the ideology) is not seen as a virtue. You're expected to be normal and decent. If you're not, people will just avoid you.

    • @iMetmor
      @iMetmor Před 19 dny

      Another couple of corrections that need to be made. Yes, certain laws can be ignored if you're a private individual keeping a low profile. For example, nobody cares if you download copyrighted music and movies, and the 6% tax rate for self-employed people like private tutors is that low exactly because self-employed people mostly didn't care to pay taxes at all.
      But if you start a business for example, the authorities will pay a much closer attention to you. If you want to open a cafe, be sure to study all the fire, epidemiology and tax regulations, because governmental checks are real and no joke.
      There is a tacit understanding among people around here which of the rules are overly complicated and can be ignored and which rules must actually be followed. So if you're new in Russia, don't come with the mindset that «ah, laws just don't apply to real life». In many cases they do, and you can run into trouble if you don't respect them where it counts.
      Also don't trust a random Russian person's opinion on it. They would probably understate the importance of regulations in areas they aren't familiar with themselves. So if you want to open a business, seek a businessman's advice, etc. Or just do everything by the book to be on the safe side.

    Hello!
    6% tax - AFAIK it's a small individual business tax, larger businesses pay bigger taxes. The employer pays the social care tax for every employee (35% of the employee's salary). Hired worker pays the 13% income tax (not himself, the employer does the bureaucratic part on his behalf).
    Homeless people do exist in Russia, they can be seen nearby big train stations. Of course, the scale of the problem is not like in the U.S. where it's even worse than Yeltsin's Russia when so called 'black realtors' were at their peak.

  • @puckavuuka
    @puckavuuka Před 19 dny +1

    As for the taxes in Russia: if you are just an employee in a company, you are actually paying 13% taxes of your salary + the employer pays about 35% of your salary (it is on top of your salary, at the employer's expense) for you into pension fund, social security fund, etc.
    But if you are a freelancer you can register with the tax authority as a freelancer (it can be made just in a phone app and the procedure takes literally 3 minutes, you don't have to file any paper documents) and pay 4-6% of you income basically through the same app.
    You can also start your own business as a sole entrepreneur and pay 6% tax of the income + 1% donation to the social security fund.
    If you are doing business as a medium/large scale company, you pay 20% VAT.

    If you happen to cook a lot/enjoy cooking, maybe show off and start advocating for mexican food among your russian friends so that demand for mexican cuisine will grow (damn I could use some quesadilla right about now... 🤤)
    At least I'm glad to see jalapenos appearing as an ingredient here and there in various menus recently

    6% is not maximum, but minimum of just one tax you pay in Russia, is you are certain type of a businessman. Regular people pay 13% income tax + ~15% "social tax" (several taxes) + 20% sales tax included into every price tag.

    Actually, with taxes is more complicated.
    If you are self-employed (that's very suitable for service based economy) ypu pay 4 or 6% from any incoming money (4 from individuals, 6 from enterprises). For individual entrepreneurs there is flat rate about $500. For others, who are employed there is 13% flat income tax and almost 30% of social security and mandatory health insurance (this is payed by employer).
    VAT is 18%, some special taxes on gasoline or alcohol is present too, done are off in special economical development zones...
    So, it's basically ok, especially knowing a vast social services available for people.

      И что хотел сказать? В России с таким плакатом ходили только предатели, которые 8 лет жили в своё удовольствие и предпочитали не замечать геноцида русских людей на Донбассе, так что не жди, что кто-то из наших граждан оценит этих так называемых борцов "за мир", потому что всё в России знают, что эти люди плевать хотели на мир и на свою страну, всё, что их интересует это их комфорт. Часть таких с плакатами свалили с Израиль, и там всё эти " Борцы за мир" Орали что надо убивать и бомбить палестинцев.

    У большинства россиян есть загородные дома и дачи. Но зимой выбирают жить в квартире,потому что это удобно и дешево. В городах сосредоточены многочисленные кафе,клубы,рестораны,музеи,театры,супермаркеты,больницы,аптеки на доступом растоянии. Многоквартирных домах,за весьма символические выплаты,подается горячая и холодная вода,электричество,газ,уборка территории,вывоз мусора, и особенно отопление за долгие холодные зимы и многое другое. Это обьясняет почему россияне предпочитают жить квартирах отличие от американцев.

    You are not quite correct about the Russian taxes. The monthly income tax is 13% for everyone who works, and 4-6% for self-employed people. But still, even 13% is much lower than that in the US.
    The more important thing, though, is usually left aside the Americans’ attention. It is that Americans are paid their salaries gross and then have epic headache with paying their taxes, whereas Russians are paid their salaries net, so about 80% of them even have no idea where their nearest Tax Inspection Office is.
    Hence the tragicomic reality is that when an American says how much he earns, his Russian vis-à-vis is envious, as he thinks it’s net; and when a Russian says how little he earns, his American vis-à-vis feels sorry for him, as he thinks it’s gross. 🤓

    В России исторически, власть была ответственна и брала на себя обязательства по защите общества и организации жизни. Иначе было не выжить!
    В западной культуре, власть была средством силового отъёма средств у населения. И да я согласен с тем, что власть на западе, это преступники, а в России власть ответственна за народы и жизнь в стране. Хотя, внешне может различий и нет, но и сейчас без сильной, устойчивой власти России и её народам не выжить. Придут иностранные завоеватели и силой отберут всё, что принадлежало людям! А само население превратятся в рабов. Защищайте Россию!
