  • Bad luxury purchased to avoid! In this video I talk to you and show you my top 5 worst purchases. Includes reviews on Chanel Boy, Valentino Rockstuds, Chanel earrings, Miu Miu Vitello Lux. NOTE that I love the look of these items, my critisism is of the quality of the goods, and the materials they have been made from (materials not up to the task of being hard wearing). Little tip as i work with them: All CHANEL pearls and crystals, on their clothes and on their fashion jewelry are from Swarovski. What you need is the "crystal round white pearl 001 650" or the "crystal round cream pearl 001 620" from Swarovski. Do an internet research, where in UK you have a professional Swarovski B2B retailer and just order them in the right size. They are fairly cheap. Same for all the stones in wholesale, you just need to know wich one it is. :)
    The discoloration problems on all of your leather goods are an easy fix also with professional re-dyeing. Especially for the MiuMiu, the invest should pay off after you sold it. And the Valentino's: I would definitely bring the shoes back to the store / seller if they would wear off that way after 1 - 3 uses. Should at least bring you a store credit for a better purchase. ;)
    All the best to you, i love your channel.

      They use swarovski? I doubted they did, their stones just don't look swarovski quality to me? Maybe its the way they set them or their metal plating that still makes them look cheapish.

    This is why I go 'vintage'. Things that were made years ago (by the same designers) seem to have been built to last. It's a shame because buying designer should be something really special and classic you can keep and a lot seem be creating 'throwaway fashion' subpar items and it's too damn ££££ for that! Great video.

    Hey Sophie! I know someone who bought a Prada bag as a gift to her Mother and after that lady used it for like three weeks, one of the top handles broke! I mean, such an expensive bag shouldn't break after that time, if not ever!
    They took it back to Prada, the bag suddenly disappeared after weeks of waiting for repair and after about three months contacted the manager.. The man didn't know what was going on, took another month or so and then they went back into the store with all the receipts and the e-mails they had received when communicating with the store in the first three months of waiting. After a couple more weeks they were phoned by someone at Prada, excusing them for what happened and that a brand new bag could not be handed over, but they would get a voucher instead.. Not even cashback! She sold the voucher on eBay and got her Mom a Neverfull instead

      @@chidenisee Many Italians are not happy with Prada (Miu Miu, included since, as we all know, it is under Prada) because, in the last few years, they've been outsourcing from China - that means, Prada is no longer 100% made in Italy. Of course, this poses a really bad name for the Italian leatherware craftsmanship as well as a letdown for the local economy.

    if you buy Chanel jewellery, it's just plated. Simple, whatever they tell you in the boutique is true, but it's nothing more than plated base metal. Go buy something unique... support artists and craftspeople anyways...

    • @lenny6428
      @lenny6428 Před 8 lety +37

      So true, quality over brand I say. I think not all luxury items are worth getting unless you're getting it for the quality and design that is so unique to its own brand, (like Lady Dior and Christian Louboutin shoes) and not for the brand itself.

    • @pewpewnim
      @pewpewnim Před 8 lety +26

      I just need to point out that jewelry you buy at the Chanel Boutique are just costume jewelry. They are relatively affordable. If you want precious jewelry, Chanel has a seperate jewelry store for that and they are priced appropriately, aka not affordable at all.

    • @donglabong
      @donglabong Před 8 lety +15

      pewpewnim when you but fine jewellery you are buying hand made, hand set, hand polished unique items. That considered they are affordable, however they are valued accordingly to the hours of craftsmanship that has been lavished on each piece... the price and the value are distinct...

    I had the Valentino rockstud heels and the strap (to fasten the shoe) actually broke.. THE FIRST TIME I WORE THEM! Absolutely devastated! I returned them to store.. Was told I could exchange. I phoned early in the morning to reserve the shoes and was told they were put aside out the back. When I went to make the exchange a child was tottering around in the shoes, scuffing them as she went and I learned that actually they were the display pair, so of course I asked for a full refund. In my eyes, this isn't good enough! Disappointed was an understatement.. Yet I still want another pair! Why do they have to look so beautiful!!!

      That's just horrible! I have two Rockstud flats and two pairs of heeled Tan-Go's - I bought all of them online (Farfetch, Mytheresa, Matchesfashion) and never had a problem with them. I'm surprised that Sophie's Valentinos look bad after 1-2 wears! My Rockstuds were of a different leather material though - one is made of grained leather, the other, smooth leather; my Tan-Gos are both patent leather. I use them all the time during spring and summer and they still look flawless, except for the soles, of course.

    Regarding the Chanel earrings, I completely agree with you, Dear Sophie.
    I bought, 10 years ago, in Brussels, a Chanel ring with crystal stones. The first day I wore the ring, I already lost a few stones. I went back to the Chanel Boutique to ask them to fix the ring. They sent back the ring to the factory where they kept it for 4 months!!!
    When I collected it back, it was fixed, but it didn't take long before the ring lost again a few crystal stones. When I went back to Chanel to show the ring, the shop attendant had the arrogance to tell me that the ring looked more "vintage" damaged like that!!!
    I must say that I felt a bit deceived and disgusted!

    Chanel caviar leather can not last as well ! I had very bad experience recently with Chanel also. My husband bought a jumbo classic flap for me in August when he had a business trip to Europe and had a chance to stop over in Paris for few hours. I’ve had no issues with the bag up until 3 weeks before, I discovered some leather cracks at the bottom of the bag, I was stumped, do not know what exactly was going on! Caviar leather supposed to be durable! I have no idea if it was cracked before we purchased it or it happened during the recent two months. But I used the bag for few times only with a lot of care, I wear the bag to office in the morning and bring it back in the evening. Spending a great amount on a Chanel bag is because of the quality of the materials and craftsmanship that goes into making the bag, how could this even happened in the first place? I brought it to Chanel service centre, and was being told this is due to wear and tear, I do not know what to say!!!

    I feel that it is about "branding" which has become in vogue not about quality. The Hermes H and the Chanel C....and they know that they can cheap out on quality and ride the reputation right into the ground. Which they have. As a consumer i would say stop buying. It is the only power you have. But many wear these things for status and like the neon flashing branding to be well displayed and will pay lots of money for this despite the fact that the quality has deteriorated over the years.

    The first purse: It's the napa finish, they put the effect in only one side of the leather, the problem here is they didn't tinted the whole skin just in one side so it makes it look greeish, and actually is not that much expensive to color the whole skin. I would not recommend to use liquid shoe polish, that actually make things worse, use cream shoe polish, apply it in thin layers and let it dry. FYI I work in a "safety shoes brand factory" and we make a composite toe safety boot we make with this kind of leather we use cow leather, and we retail it for 30 USD so you have an idea how cheap this leathers are, or how cheap is to produce napa leather. If you make it from pig 's leather you get a very resistant material but without elasticity, though napa is way more resilient on pig leather.
    We also use the best quality full grain leather in shoes we sell for less than 100 USD so I can tell you good quality leather is not that expensive.
    Pink shoes: one side napa finish as well.
    The beige handbag: there may be a defect with the curing of the leather, probably they over burned the leather with the chemicals. I came to that conclusion given the fact the leather is pealed, and real leather doesn't peel, the finish can peel if you didn't cured the leather right.

    I personally feel that all designer brands are absolute ripoffs and Chanel has become even more and more greedy the last couple of years because they continually raise the prices of their already exorbitant and costly bags. Yes, they are beautiful but when you have a bag that costs so much you are constantly afraid that something might happen to it or that it can be stolen. I have one or two and everytime i wear them i constantly have to be on my guard as to where i put it down, etc etc- sooo tiring. Their quality is simply not good enough for the money being asked. I think that if many people were to be a fly on the wall and see what goes on behind the scenes of making they would disgusted. Sophie, you always do nice videos. Such a pity about those pieces that r now ruined.

    I worked for a designer of high-end leather goods and they never did testing of the leather! They used lamb skin and other fragile leathers and when the bags and shoes were returned due to damage, they just said "oh, we should use something else next season" but they didn't... Their repair-service had so much to do. approx. 100 items per week.

    You might be able to cure the sheepskin with a leather conditioner like oak wood that's wax based and made for saddles. High end saddles often have areas of a "thinner/fragile" leather. Apply a generous coating over the bag and leave in a dry hot place. It fully cures when the leather no longer feels tacky. I do this with my boots too. Helps to waterproof them. I'm so surprised that the dye is so superficial with some of these items. I've got gouges in old riding boots that are hardly noticeable due to the leather being properly dyed.

    Oh my goodness! I have been cringing all through this video, particularly at the fate of the two pairs of Rockstuds. One spends too much time on research, not to speak of the actual cash investment involved, to end up with items that cannot withstand a mere single usage.
    I invested the money in two pairs of Ferragamo Vara pumps and fortunately, so far so good. By me, if you're going to plonk down $$$ on the premise of buying designer, then by golly they had better not go doolally on you after one measly wear.
    I like a clean, pristine look about myself so I don't fault your position about the Boy bag or the MiuMiu either come to that. I guess we all live and learn.

    The Prada Safiano leather bag has been a horrendous experience for me. Many pieces are falling apart. Luckily I didn't pay full price because I was working at a luxury dept store, but it still was $1k. The stitching in several places has come apart. My Prada shoes are still holding up after years of hard wearing, but the leather was pebble. Companies really need to do quality testing especially for products over $1k.

    I am so glad you spoke about the Chanel earrings, i have the necklace in the classic crystal style. I got it for my 21st birthday 3 years ago and had nothing but issues with it, in less than a month the chain snapped, and crystals fell out, then in the space of 3 months of it being fixed the clasp broke too, and even more crystals broke. Considering the amount of money it was, i think i will stay clear of Chanel jewellery even though i have had my eye on the matching earrings but after you said about yours not sure it's worth the hassle. Yet i have had a Tiffany necklace for nearly 10 years and was less than half that price and had no issues. Thank you for sharing this video with us xx

    products produced before have more quality. it all boils down to business now..maximize revenue minimize cost and product quality is not so much a priority. they may be doing that on purpose so u end up buying again. also, as an addition, never buy patent in beige or light colors. it will discolor in time. i researched and it says never store it near dark colored items bec it will somehow "absorb" it. Prada and Miu Miu on the other hand, are usually not that high in quality but my mom has one in calfskin which was bought in an outlet and it is still looking great after 2 years of everyday use. she is not even taking good care of it. Gucci for me is the one that is quality before but in recent years became really bad. bag handles easily have discoloration and peeling and men formal shoes with rubber sole ends up being just glued and not sewn at all.

      When you buy something expensive, you are probably expecting to be paying for the quality as well, not just the name. You are expecting that the materials used are of top quality and that will pass the test of time - once they start wearing out after just one or two uses, well shit, you can buy a fake that is copying the original that will last much longer than the actual, expensive product.

    I have many Chanel costume pieces (earrings, bracelets, broaches, rings, necklaces) and I've had to repair or restore every single piece that is decorated with stones or pearls (size of the piece does not seem to matter). It's absolutely ridiculous. Also all my Chanel lambskin bags have worn poorly like your boy bag and it pains me that they now refuse to repair any bag purchased over 5 years ago and also charge an obscene amount to repair bags within the 5 year limit. These are some of the reasons why I've decided to no longer purchase Chanel bags and accessories. I'd rather spend the money on quality bags and accessories from Hermes (some bags cost less than a Chanel Jumbo in the states!) or other similar brands.

    The thing with designer goods is, and I'm saying this as someone who loves them, people expect the quality (due to the high price) to be some miraculous thing, but in many cases designer items don't hold up better than no-name items when it comes to normal wear-and-tear.

      I've had the same bag for about 3 years and totally agree: I've used it for work, school, travel, everything and it still looks great. Same goes for my MK wallet - looks brand new.

      Hi there 😊 i think my best bag purchase so far was a large MK jet set tote bag. It's like a breath of fresh air. In saying this, I already own LV galliera, prada lux tote, a coach and a longchamp bag. I wasn't paying attention to MK before. Now they have my attention. Owh another brand that you should look into is Tory burch. Look at their Perry tote, lovely!

    The the coating around the edges of my Prada bag have peeled too. And I own the kitten heel version of the Valentino rockstuds --the leather has worn just like yours on the back of the heels and on the ankle straps only after a couple wears. Great video --helps people think before they purchase.

    Thank you so much for the share! I'm always wondering how lambskin wears for people who actually use their bags, and your video has helped me so much!
